Firstly,Iwouldliketothankallthosewhocontributed
tothecelebraonofmyformalInstallaonlastFriday
eveningsuchawonderfulcelebraon.Itwasindeeda
wonderfuloccasion,andagreatnightwashadbyone
and all. Your connued support makes my task that
mucheasier,andIamprofoundlygrateful.

This coming week will see the celebraon of Ash


Wednesday, the beginning of our annual Season of
Lent. This period of penitence that leads into our
celebraon of the great Solemnity of Easter and the
Easter Season is our chance each year to stop and
reectonourlives.IntheRiteofChrisanIniaonof
Adults (RCIA) it is the nal period of preparaon for
bapsm, conrmaon and admission to the table of
communion.

Lent is oen commonly associated with the


Sacrament of Penance (or confession or
reconciliaonthe sacrament is known by many

names)andLentisindeedapropiousmetoseekto
celebrate Gods love and mercy for us in this
wonderfulsacrament.

While I hope to organise a communal celebraon of


thissacramentduringLent(accordingtothe2ndRite),
it should also be noted that each Saturday there are
two opportunies to approach the sacrament: at
Tuncurry, from 8:30am unl just before the 9am
Mass, and at Forster, from 4:45pm unl 5:15pm. It is
also possible to celebrate the sacrament at other
mes by appointment (subject to my other
commitments)pleasedonothesitatetocontactme.

I would encourage you to consider taking the


opportunity to celebrate this sacrament during the
Season of Lent, so that on Easter night we can stand
before our God and celebrate the Resurrecon
baskinginGodsallembracingloveandmercy.

Aboveall,however,Iwouldencourageyoutousethis
Season of Lent as an opportunity to renew and
deepenyourrelaonshipwithJesus,whoseDeathand
Resurrecon we are preparing to recall during our
celebraonofthehighpointofourliturgicalyear,the
GreatTriduum.

This training, helpful for SRE Teachers (Catechists,
Scripture teachers), Assistants and Coordinators, is
being oered over a series of sessions in 2012. These
sessions may also be useful for those involved in
variousChildrensministriesaswell.

The 2012 sessions will commence on Monday 27th


February be oered at St Michaels Catholic Church,
Sproule Street, Nelson Bay, and each session will run

February.

The Season of Lent marks the annual Project
Compassion appeal under the auspices of Caritas, the
Churchsinternaonalaidanddevelopmentagency.

Givingboxesandenvelopestoenableyoutotakepart
inthisannualappealaspartoftheLentencalltoself
denial and charityare available at the rear of the
churchthisweekend.

The Rite of Elecon for those parcipang in the Rite
of Chrisan Iniaon of Adults will be celebrated on
Sunday 26th February in the Sacred Heart Cathedral
commencingat2:30pm.

This important liturgy will be lead by the Bishop, and


all members of the Diocesan community are most
welcometoaend.

Each year we are invited to gather in prayer with the
Bishop during Lent. This year our Deanery Liturgy of
Hope and Healing will be held at St Brigid's Church,
RaymondTerraceonFriday 2nd March at7pm.

This year we gather around the Bishop's moo of In


the beginning the Word. This will be a me for the
Church of our Deanery to gather and give thanks for
the blessings that we have as a Church and also an
opportunity to think about those areas in our lives as
ChurchwhereweneedtheprompngofGod,soasto
betheChurchthatGodwantsofus.

Please take the opportunity to come and pray with


theChurchofourdeanery.

Lent is the Season of the Churchs year that is a
preparaon for the celebraon of Easter. It is a me
for reecon and prayerful sharing of faith with each
other. This year our parish will be using the resource
published by the Archdiocese of Brisbane entled
Towards the Light.Thecostofthebookletwillbe$8.

OnAshWednesdaywearemarkedwithacrossofash,
a public sign that our lives are not always what we
hoped for. During lent we are given the opportunity
to reassess the direcon of our lives, asking God to
lead us from the ashes Toward the Light of Christ.
Whynottakeadvantageofthisopportunitybyhosng
or joining a Lenten Group and sharing some prayer
meandsomelifeexperienceswithothers.

A list of available groups are available at the rear of


thechurchthisweek,andyouareinvitedtoaddyour
nametoyourpreferredgroup.

Following on from last weeks bullen:

(ii) Butallcommunityprayerpresupposes,atitsbase,
personal prayer. Personal prayer does not mean the
same thing as private prayer. Private prayer in the
senseofprayeronourown,insilenceandsolitudeis
amustinlife.Butliturgyisadierentthing.Itisnota
place for private prayer, but it is a place for personal
prayer the prayer of our own hearts which engages
with, welcomes, and opens up the prayer of the
community. So, if we are to play our role in
celebrang the liturgy then the quality of our own
personalprayer,thewaywe pray the Mass,iscrucial.
Noone else can do that for us. The dierent parts of
the eucharisc celebraon each have a dierent
dynamic,invingustoprayindierentways.

(iii) Finally, even silence has its part to play in an


acvecelebraonoftheliturgy.Itenablesustomove
from intense moments of personal prayer to parts of
the liturgy which collect that personal prayer and
make it communal. For example, a me of silent
reecon aer the Scripture reading would enable
each of us to digest and respond to the Word in our
hearts. That response would then ow into a
communalliturgicalresponseaswepraytogetherthe
psalm.
