How often do you watch horror films?

Very often (3+ weekly ) Ofter (1-3 a week) moderately (1-4 a month) Rarely (1 or less monthly)

These findings imply that the majority of people questioned rarely watch horror films and only watch horror films about once a month. This could signify the need for a film that reaches out to everyones expectations and needs. I think the options available to select were suitable and they had enough option and there was at least one that applies to everyone. There were 2 people that often watch horror films 1-3 times a week. These two individuals will give concise and evaluative opinions.

What style of horror film do you prefer?

Slasher Demonic Apocoliptic Psychological

Looking at the findings our audience preferably would watch Physiological horror films. To me this suggests that gore apocalyptic conventions have either been over used or are not jumpy, scary or add enough tension. Looking at the other options available the next most popular was apocalyptic. Even though recently a lot of apocalyptic films have been comedies, rom coms or thriller, for example: Finding a friend for the end of the world, 2012 and The day after tomorrow. The findings suggest that a physiological horror would be the best genre to base my production about. It would allow me to create tension through physiological genre conventions. The connecting of two genre conversion would be even better as it would meet the genre conventions of other viewers and not just our target audience. It would allow me to include more

What part of a horror film do you prefer?

Analysing the results I can identify that the audience that I questioned preferred the story plot to be of quality, rather than certain aspects to be better than others. I can tell this by the information from the graph. It is showing that the most popular answer is the story plot as a whole. This tells me that the audience want it to

be of quality and tension. Evaluating the ways in which horror films are written, most of the effort is concentrated on specific scenes instead of the story line as a whole. This allows the director to concentrate on the genre conventions to maximise the tension and build up. Looking at these results, they show that the audiences favourite character would be a male. Reasons for this may be due to the majority of people asked were female. This could be because they might want or feel the need for more sexual references within male actors. Another reason could be because they allow for more action and gore in films. I say this because stereotypically men are the action heros. Women allow for just as much but are not as well known for it. The second favourite choice was women. This could be due to the male gaze and the need for sexual references. This is an aspect I think will be incorporated within my production as it suits the targets needs and wants.

Looking at these statistics it is clear our biggest target audience are young adults aged 16-25. The reason for this could be because young adults (16,17,18) might feel rebellious and important if people know they have watched films above their own age rating. Another reason could be because it is the age in which young adults choose to experiment with film genres and it could be the point in their life where they have the most free time.

Looking at the results the favourite character is the younger one as they go against some genre conventions are usually more shocking, for example: Orphan, The Ring and The Last Exorcism. As children are portrayed as innocent and helpless it creates a sense of surprise and sickness as they go against come codes and conversions. As the genre conventions have adapted and evolved children have become a horror convention in their own right. When horror films were first introduced and evolved children were never seen as horror conventions as it seemed to sickening and shocking.

Looking at these results it reflects that the majority of the people who answered the questions prefer horrors that are rated 18. This connotes that they ideally prefer this rating because it allows for the most violence, gore, death and more. The genre conventions that films rated 18 are those that usually go against the norm and whats expected, hence the highest rating. To me this implies that young adults aged 16-25 prefer things that go against genre codes and conventions and the norm. These findings will influence me to use horror codes and conventions that are not the norm and adapt my production to fit in with the needs and want of

the audience.
