MYBF

poker
night
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
The Moorestown Youth Base-
ball Federation (MYBF) is host-
ing its annual poker night on Sat-
urday, Feb. 9. The money raised
will benefit the organization.
Last year, we pulled in $13,000
for poker night, MYBF President
Dan Gannon said, adding this
year the organization is hoping to
raise $25,000.
Proceeds from the event will go

Over the years, technologys
presence in the classroom has in-
creased. With the addition of
smart boards, new educational
computer programs and online
projects, technology has a differ-
ent role in the classroom helping
teachers perform daily tasks of
educating students. But without
proper knowledge and equipment
training, teachers are unable to
properly utilize these instru-
ments.
During a Moorestown Board of
Education meeting on Tuesday,
Jan. 22, a number of teachers
were concerned with increasing
technology in the district that
doesnt include enough training.
South Valley Elementary
School teacher B.J. Lemaire ad-
dressed board members with con-
cerns that the increase of smart
boards, new and updated pro-
grams and no training are hold-
ing teachers back from using the
equipment properly.
[Teachers] are held back by
limited resources, Lemaire said,
adding the school district should
train and repair the technology
currently in the schools.
Roberts Elementary School
teacher Bridget Potts reiterated
concerns of teachers at the board
meeting.
Whether we all thought it was
necessary or not we embraced it
in our classrooms, said Potts re-
ferring to the addition of smart
boards and other hi-tech tools in
Moorestown classrooms. We
want training on what we have in
our classrooms.
Potts was also concerned the
board members were looking at
technology to replace the human
component of teaching the
teachers.
I dont need a smart board. I
need some quality literature and
engaged students, she said.
Board of education member A.
Leigh Powell said the idea is not
to replace teachers; it is to en-
hance and amplify teaching in
the classroom.
He said the initial problem
with having multiple technicians
in the district was time was not
being properly allocated between

keep of 11 fields around
Moorestown, equipment, uni-
forms, accessories and other ex-
penses necessary to fund baseball
for the season. A $2,500 scholar-
ship, the Anthony Muir Scholar-
ship, is also presented to a high
school senior who was a member
of MYBF.
But Gannon said a majority of
the funds are needed for field im-
provements.
Our biggest expense are the
fields, he said, adding the organ-
ization is looking to install
dugouts on the baseball field at
Pryor Park.
With approximately 800 mem-
bers ranging from ages 4 to 15, the
biggest part of the park improve-
ments and upkeep is safety. If
needed, the money could go to-
ward filling in any divots in the
field, repairing holes in the fenc-
ing and more.
The biggest thing is always
safety, he said.
The poker player limit is 150.
Winners will receive a cash prize,
and a seat in the Parx Casino
BigStax series with a buy in of $550.
If you dont feel like testing
your luck on a poker game, there
are other activities at the event.
The fundraiser includes a silent
auction, food and drinks, music
and wine tasting.
Volunteer and mother of a
MYBF player Susan Schmoll said
the wine tasting is a $10 blind
taste test with three red wines
and three white wines. The wine
types are nothing fancy, she said,
adding the wines types are mod-
erate, high and bargain base-
ment. If you guess five of the
wine types correctly, you get $5
back, she said.
With the food, drinks and gam-
bling set aside, a special guest
will be at the event.
Former Eagles All-Pro and cur-
rent St. Louis Rams safety
Quintin Mikell will make a spe-
cial appearance at the event to
sign autographs.
Its a great night. Its a lot of
fun and you dont have to play
poker. Just come out and support
the cause, he said.
For those wishing to play
poker, ticket prices are $150. The
ticket price for non-poker players
is $35. Both ticket prices include
food and beverage. Tickets can be
preordered online by visiting
www.moorestownbaseball.org or
purchased at the door.
TO REGISTER
MYBF spring registration is
now open until Jan. 31. Those
who register before Jan. 31 will
receive a free 30-minute indi-
vidual lesson at the All-Star
Baseball Academy. Members
can choose between hitting,
pitching or fielding and must

BREAKTHRU Fitness & Physi-
cal Therapy will go red on Na-
tional Wear Red Day for Women
on Friday, Feb. 1, to raise aware-
ness of number one killer of
women
BREAKTHRU Fitness & Physi-
cal Therapys three locations in
Medford, Moorestown, and
Voorhees will make a life-saving
fashion statement on Friday, Feb.
1, for the 10th annual National
Wear Red Day for Women, to help
the American Heart Association
turn New Jersey red and bring at-
tention to the number one killer
of New Jersey and American fe-
males heart disease. Employees
at BREAKTHRU Fitness & Physi-
cal Therapy are joining compa-
nies throughout New Jersey and
across the nation by wearing
something red and going red, in
an effort to raise awareness of
cardiovascular diseases. Accord-
ing to the American Heart Asso-
ciation, cardiovascular diseases,
such as heart disease and stroke,
claim the lives of nearly 420,000
women per year more female
lives than from the next four
highest causes of death com-
bined.
On National Wear Red Day,
BREAKTHRU Fitness & Physical
Therapy employees, members,
clients, patients will wear red and
donate $5 to the American Heart
Association Go Red For Women
movement. All month, each of
the three offices will be selling
paper hearts for $1. Purchasers
can write their name or a mes-
sage and the hearts will be dis-
played in each of their waiting
rooms. Money raised will benefit
research, education and pro-
grams to help reduce the inci-
dence of heart disease and stroke
in women.
At BREAKTHRU Fitness &
Physical Therapy more than 40
employees and volunteers will
participate in the campaign be-
cause for many of them heart dis-
ease is personal, said BREAK-
THRU Fitness & Physical Thera-
py Co-Owner Dr. Jodi Goldman.
This is about our mothers and
daughters, our friends and col-
leagues. National Wear Red Day
for Women is an opportunity for
everyone to remember female
friends and family members who
have suffered from heart disease.
Its also a time to think about
their own hearts and to make pos-
itive choices and changes for
their own health.
BREAKTHRU Fitness & Physi-
cal Therapy and physician offices
across the nation are putting
their passion into action by par-
ticipating in the National Wear
Red Day for Women campaign.
Their generosity is helping to
heighten awareness and bring
forth positive change to defeat
this major health threat of
women cardiovascular disease.
We are committed to support-
ing organizations and programs

T
he problems facing the U.S.
Postal Service have been well
documented. Primarily, the
service will run out of money later
this year unless reforms are put in
place.
Unfortunately for the Postal Service,
its up to Congress to make those
changes. Good luck with that. If histo-
ry is any indication, at best it can hope
for a quick fix about 30 seconds before
the clock expires.
The Postal Service is losing millions
of dollars each day. A number of fixes
had been presented, including closing
some facilities, ending Saturday deliv-
ery and getting back some of the
money that the Service has con-
tributed to future retirees benefits.
Problem is, legislation addressing
these and other issues died when the
new Congress was sworn in earlier
this month. Now, everything has to
start again from scratch.
Pretty much all of the ideas put
forth, and some that havent gained
that much notoriety, hold merit. Los-
ing Saturday service wouldnt be such
a terrible thing. Its probable that some
consolidation among facilities is possi-
ble. And the Service makes a good
point when it asks for a return of the
benefits money, something that is
unique to the Service.
Its also possible to continue to mod-
ernize, finding ways to place more
services online, for example. Even
more creative: sell advertising on
postage stamps.
Whatever the bundle of solutions
eventually looks like, its fairly certain
that, despite talk to the contrary, Con-
gress will be in no hurry to do much of
anything. We just got past another fis-
cal cliff and debt-limit deadlines are
approaching quickly.
Unfortunately for the Postal Service,
and the millions of Americans who de-
pend on it, a decision probably wont
come anytime soon.
in our opinion
Starting over
The Postal Service has a new Congress and little time before money runs out
Postal problems
The U.S. Postal Service saw legislation
to fix at least some of its problems die
when the new Congress took office.
Now it has to start all over again. Given
Congress penchant for dragging its
feet on just about everything, no on
should anticipate a resolution to this
issue anytime soon.
Counties to kick off 2013 Relay for Life season
Burlington and Camden County commu-
nity members will unite at a rally to offi-
cially launch the 2013 Relay For Life sea-
son.
Hundreds of participants will ring in
the new season with a rally that educates
everyone on how their involvement bene-
fits the American Cancer Societys goal to
save lives and create more birthdays.
Money raised will fight cancer by help-
ing people stay well and get well, by finding
cures, and by fighting back. Rally activities
will include displays by each local Relay
committee, zumba, luminaria, music, and
door prizes.
The American Cancer Society Relay For
Life is an overnight community celebra-
tion where individuals and teams camp
out, picnic, dance, play games and take
turns circling around a track relay style
to raise funds and fight cancer.
The event opens as cancer survivors
lead the way around the track and are hon-
ored with the Survivor Lap.
As the sun begins to set, the warm glow
of hundreds of luminaria light the field in
an emotional silent ceremony.
Each bag lit is in honor of a loved one
who won the fight against cancer or in re-
membrance of a special someone who lost
their battle.
The American Cancer Society Relay For
Life represents hope in that those lost to
cancer will not be forgotten, that those who
face cancer will be supported, and that one
day, cancer will be eliminated.
Come to the seasons kickoff Saturday,
Feb. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the
Moorestown Mall, located at 400 W Rt. 38.

In the past they took on too
many projects, he said.
Superintendent Brian Betze
said the board is looking to re-
solve teachers concerns.
We keep throwing technology
at people and we have never done
the training, he said, adding
technology is supposed to im-
prove instruction in the class-
room.
Betze said the school district
would look into hiring a techni-
cian if there is money in the
budget after Gov. Christies budg-
et announcement on Feb. 26.
Board President Don Mishler
said the school district would
adopt a final budget on March 21.
Kids arent making posters
anymore, they are making Power-
Points that can be shared around
the world. Its really about trying
to move from that classroom envi-
ronment to a global awareness
and sharing of ideas, he said.
Other meeting news
The board also appointed Car-
ole Butler as the director of cur-
riculum and instruction for the
district. Butler was the principal
at William Allen Middle School
and is replacing former assistant
superintendent of curriculum
and instruction Kate Burke Reilly.
During the meeting, the board
of education appointed Matthew
Keith as interim principal for the
middle school. Keith has a mas-
ters degree from Rider University.
His term will end on June 30.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the
Moorestown board of education
met during a regular meeting and
discussed the possibility of safety
improvements in light of the
tragedy at Sandy Hook Elemen-
tary School. At the time, Mishler
said he was looking to present
more of an update after the reor-
ganization meeting.
On Tuesday, Jan. 22, Mishler
gave a brief update on the securi-
ty improvements. He was unable
to go into detail about the possible
changes.
According to Mishler, the
school district did complete an in-
dependent security audit.
Changes were already made in
the high school, but future
changes might include cameras
outside of buildings, improve-
ments to locks on outside doors
and changing inside doors to have
one-way glass so any intruders
would not be able to see inside the
classroom, he said.
Police dont want armed
guards outside the doors of
schools nor do principals, Mish-
ler said.
Vice president Kathy Golden-
berg said security improvements
have been, and will continue to
be, an ongoing discussion.
It has not been put on the back
burner by any stretch, she said.

Each year, AARP volunteers
offer free assistance to low and
middle-income taxpayers, with
special attention to those 60 and
older, with the preparation of
their tax returns. You do not have
to be a member of AARP or be a
senior citizen to take advantage
of this service.
The trained volunteers assist
with federal tax returns, home-
stead rebate applications, proper-
ty tax reimbursement applica-
tions and state tax returns. All re-
turns are e-filed. Due to the con-
struction and resulting lack of
parking at the Moorestown Li-
brary, counseling will take place
every Friday from Feb. 1, to April
12, at the Hope Community
Church located on 235 West Main
Street (next to CVS and opposite
Wawa). There is ample parking
behind the church, which can be
accessed from either Main Street
or Second Street (use the door at
the back of the church). In order
to reduce waiting time, appoint-
ments will be required. To sign up
for the program, call the
Moorestown Clerks office at 235-
0912, ext. 3016, after Jan. 1, during
normal business hours. Appoint-
ments will schedule starting at
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Those interested are asked to
bring tax returns and supporting
paperwork (wage statements, so-
cial security statement, dividend
and interest reports, etc.) from
2011 and the tax booklets received
from the federal and state tax of-
fices along with supporting pa-
perwork for this 2012s tax return.
If itemizing, bring backup infor-
mation. Also bring the property
tax reimbursement booklet if you
have received it.
If filing jointly, both parties
must be present.
