Pastor Alices blog "Is this a new scheme to get out of doing
the lawn in the summer?" I was questioning Richard about his plan to turn our back lawn into a huge garden. He has been following a site on the internet about growing food instead of lawns - and he seems to be taking it to heart. He fancies himself a farmer, or he'd really like to be that sort of rugged individual. Nothing wrong with a garden - it's just that we haven't been very successful at it thus far so the idea of a larger scale attempt made me anxious. As some of you know, last year he was convinced he could eat manyof theplants in our back yard. (And he tried to assure me it had nothing to do with my cooking; but seeing him picking the dandelions to eat didn't give me condence.) "It will be great!," Richard said, "We'll have our own tomatoes and peppers and maybe eggs." "Waitwhat?" Did he say eggs? Eggs that come from chickens? Richard has always dreamed of fresh eggs, but all our crazy place needs is a chicken or two running around! Knowing our family, I can guess that it would just be a matter of time before a chicken would get loose in our house or someone would bring chicks in out of the cold. If you are familiar with the old tv show Green Acres (about a city guy who wants to farm but can't, and his blonde wife who tries to cook but fails) you can imagine why I often refer to our place as "Green Acres" too. The point is that some people have high hopes for what they want to happen, but it isn't that simple. I really wish I could do all that I want to do and I wish I were really good at many things that I am not. There's nothing wrong with trying new things - and we don't have to be great at them. But we also can't do everything. And I believe we are given special gifts to develop, and

God wants us to focus on the wonderful gifts that are our own. The church is the best place to nd out about your gifts and to develop them for the good of all. Sounds like a great adventure doesn't it? As for Richard, he seems determined to try something new and that's great. He needs to be sure to do what he is best at, but still explore other opportunities. I'd feel a bit more condent about the whole thing but just the other day I caught him saying to the kids,"wouldn't it be great to have goats milk all the time?" Oh no! Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons -1 Corinthians 12: 4-6
