PROCEDURE FOR POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT

1. SCOPE: PWHT shall be required in the following circumstances or when shown on the design drawings. 1.1 When fabrication tubular with d/t ratio less than 20. 1.2 For other areas where the minimum throat thickness exceeds 50 mm. 2. APPLICATION CODE: AWS. D 1.1 3. PROCEDURE FOR POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT: 3.1 Heat the weld joints by electrical resistance heating coils or furnace heating. 3.2 Control the heating parameters, soaking time as per described below. 3.3 The PWHT shall be performed under third party inspection wherever required. 4. HEATING PARAMETERS: 4.1 Heating rate: rate of heating shall be controlled above 300C.Heating rate to be 100C / Hr, but in no case heating rate shall exceed 200C/hr Cooling rate: rate of cooling shall be controlled above 300C, Cooling rate to be 100C / Hr, but in no case cooling rate shall exceed 200C /hr. 5. SOAKING TIME AND TEMPERATURE: After a maximum temperature 600C is reached on quenched and tempered steel or a mean temperature range between 600C to 650C is reached on Other steels, the temperature of the assembly shall be held within the Specified time as shown below based on the thickness of thicker part.

Sr. No. 1. 2. 3. 6 mm or less

Thickness 15 min.

Holding Time

6 mm to 50 mm Over 50 mm

5 min. / 2 mm 2 hrs plus 15 min. for each additional 25 mm over 50 mm

6. THERMOCOUPLES: At least four thermocouples shall be used. Thermocouples recorders & recording machine shall have valid calibration. 7. TIME TEMPERATURE RECORDING: 7.1 Temperature / Time curve shall be taken from recorder for review and approval.
