Course Description : This course covers the application of static principles for solution of problems with particles, trusses, frames, cables, and other structural components under concentrated distributed force systems

Course Objective

After completing this course, the student must be able to:

1. Show analysis methods to examine force systems acting on an engineering structure in static equilibrium. 2. Evaluate the constraining reactions needed to maintain static equilibrium on two- and threedimensional rigid bodies acted on by force systems. 3. Analyze the internal distribution of bending and shear forces needed and select the proper size of the members of the structure Course Distribution Week 1-2 3-4 5-6 7 8-9 10 11 12 13-14 15-17 18 TOPICS 1. Introduction: units, unit conversion, methods of solution, accuracy, Newtons Laws, review of geometry/trigonometry. 2. Statics of Particles: forces in a plane, forces in space, vector additions, transmissibility, moments as vectors. 3. Rigid Bodies, Equivalent systems of forces, internal vs external forces, vector algebra, couples. Prelim Examination 4. Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies: two dimensions, three dimensions, free body diagrams, reactions at supports and connections, determinacy/indeterminacy of structures. 5. Distributed Forces: Centroids and Center of Gravity, distributed/equivalent loads on beams, hydrostatic loads. 6. Analysis of Structures, method of joints, method of sections, redundant/multiforce members Midterm Examination 7. Forces in Beams and Cables, shear/moment diagrams by section or integration, parabolic cables, catenaries. 8. Friction, static/kinetic, angle of friction, wedges 9. Evaluation: Classroom exams Final Examination
