De La Salle University Department of Civil Engineering COURSE SYLLABUS Course Code: XMATHEO Credit Units: Three (3) units

Prerequisite : Theory of Structures Required knowledge: Matrix Algebra Course Title : Matrix Theory of Structures Course Description: Matrix analysis of structures: one-dimensional bars, plane trusses, beams, plane frames, plane grids, space trusses, space frames; Special topics: elastic supports, inclined supports, internal hinges, static condensation, axial deformation, substructuring and non-uniform members; Introducing computer-aided structural analysis. General Objectives: 1. To present the displacement method of matrix structural analysis. 2. To present the theoretical background on matrix structural analysis used in computer software for structural analysis 3. To introduce computer-aided structural analysis. Value Aims: 1. To develop an awareness in the students concerning their moral and social responsibility in carrying-out proper and accurate analysis of structures to assure their safe & reliable design. 2. To develop honesty, patience and perseverance in students through the course requirements in the form of problem sets, exercises, exams and recitation. Textbook/References: 1. (S) Sennet, Robert E. (1994). Matrix Analysis of Structures, Prentice-Hall 2. (K) Kassimalli, Aslam (1999). Matrix Analysis of Structures, Brooks/Cole Publishing Co. 3. (O) Oreta, A.W.C. (2004). Understanding 2D Structural Analysis. Policies: 1. Grading System: The general average is based on 50% Average of Long Quizzes, 20% Problem Sets , 15% Oral Report & 15% Final Project. The following scale will be used to compute the final grade: 4.0 : 92.0 - 100.0 3.5 : 84.9 - 91.9 3.0: 80.0 84.9 2.5 : 70.0 79.9 2.0 : 65.0 69.9 1.5 : 60.0- 64.9 1.0 : 50.0 59.9 0.0 : 59.9 below 2. Problem sets or homework are assigned to deepen your understanding of the principles for the teacher to gauge the students level of understanding. Individual work is encouraged at all times. Problem Sets must be written in short bond paper and must be submitted on the set deadline to get the maximum grade. Late submission will have corresponding deduction in grade (10% per week late) 3. No make-up will be given for any missed quiz . A missed quiz is given a grade of 0. 4. Oral Report Individual or group report is also a requirement in the course to evaluate the students ability in oral presentation. A topic will be assigned for oral reporting. 5. Finals The final requirement is a case study on structural analysis. See Reference by Oreta (2004). A special problem related to structural analysis is presented and manual and/or computer-aied structural analysis is performed illustrating the case study. A written report showing tables and figures must be submitted, The format of the report will be given later.
