ENTERPRISE DECOMMISIONED!

Two former Doctor Who production people have been nominated for Oscars. John Debney was nominated for score for The Passion of Christ. Debney composed the music for the 1996 TV movie. Sophie Okonedo, who voiced Allison in The Scream of Shalka web cast was nominated for best actress in Hotel Rwanda. Good luck to both.

UPN has finally pulled the plug on not only the series Enterprise but the entire ailing franchise by announcing that there would be no m o r e movies, at least in the near future. After 4 seasons of dismal ratings and a desperation move to Fridays, Enterprise will be concluding this May. The move, not a shock to most may result in the first time since 1987 that Star Trek will not be SATURDAY NIGHT WHO REFERENCE airing a series. It is uncertain what the producers will now do for the ending of the series as no doubt these last episodes were in at least preproduction.

In one skit on February 5s Saturday Night Live featured phone sex for Sci-Fi fans and saw Paris Hilton had the lines - Operators are standing by. Who knows, one of them might be me. Does Doctor Who turn you on, baby? Well, Im getting into my TARDIS right now. Oooh! Id better put on my big floppy hat and scarf. I hope I dont find any Daleks here. Are you a Dalek, baby? Do you want to exterminate me? Call today.

NEW GALACTICA
Battlestar Galactica blasts onto TV with impressive ratings for the SciFi Channel. The Friday night 10pm debut achieved more ratings than UPNs 9pm Enterprise and this is especially good since Sci-Fis cable channel does not reach as many viewers as UPN. A second series has been approved but it is unknown how many or when the second series will begin. NBC showed a repeat of the mini series to kick of the series and USA is handling repeats. USA and Sci-Fi are owned by NBC.

The Organizational meeting was painless and short but everything was covered. In terms of finances, everything is in good shape. Nothing new with membership fees. The Web site is still there and is looking for ideas and material if anyone wants to contribute. The newsletter is still going but our seemingly unending surplus of material provided by yours truly is all but gone and thanks to some support guest authors in January, we had a very varied and interesting issue. But now we are back to square one and as complete this issue, we have only two authors for this issue. I do expect more input once the new series begins airing but outside of the box ideas are now welcome. The club trip was discussed hotly with some strong points for and against two choices of Lake George and Washington D.C. A decision should be made at the February meeting. Currently, we are looking for submissions in the form of articles, reviews, puzzles, humor, games and opinion. Subjects can range from Doctor Who (Especially Audio Adventures and other areas not covered by our existing writers), Star Trek, Smallville, comics, gaming and any Sci-Fi or Fantasy related areas. These submissions can be for the web site or newsletter.

The Tom Baker Era By Jeffrey A. Zyra THE ARMAGEDDON FACTOR By Bob Baker & Dave Martin 6 episodes
Well of course Im all right, but supposing I wasnt all right? The trail to the last segment of The Key to Time ends up on the planet Atrios. Atrios is engaged in a war with the planet Zeos. The Doctor and Romana discover that the planet Zeos is deserted and is run by a battle computer. The computer is in turn controlled by the Shadow on a 3 rd hidden planet between Atrios and Zeos. The Shadow is an agent of the Black Guardian who would like nothing more than to posses the Key to Time. Things are not easy for the Doctor and Romana as they still do not have a clue as to where the six segments is. This story is probably the better of the six stories in The Key to Time season but not by

SLEEP OF REASON Review by Ken Parker

Strange happenings at a Psychiatric home have brought the Doctor, Fitz and Trix into an investigation that spans several generations and through the dimensions of space. This story really is a horror novel in most cases. A place cut off from outside help. A vicious wolf creature attacking anyone who tries to leave. Ghost like connections to the past and a being possessing others are all standard horror cliques but author Martin Day really puts it all together nicely. Actually, the Doctor doesnt appear for well into the book and this gives the author time to set-up the guest characters. The Doctors presence appears earlier in the story but he is kept away from the pages until he is necessary. He is not in the way during the story set-up and this works well. There are other sub plots that help other characters along and at times these may be too in depth and not important, but in order to make secondary characters believable, Day has brought out their dirty laundry and made these people real. Sleep of Reason reminds me of Eater of Wasps in its style. I have always enjoyed horror in Doctor Who and this is a perfect example of excellent horror and sci-fi.

much. Unfortunately, it is to long. It could easily have been trimmed down to 4 episodes from 6. This story just seemed to bog down with going back to one planet to another in trying to stop the war. It seemed like this entire episode was in fact in a t i m e l o o p . Some of t h e action that takes place on the Shadows planet is all right as we meet another renegade Time Lord named Drax. The 6th segment turns out to be human in this episode, which brings out some dilemmas for the Doctor and Romana. In all, a story that could have been shorter and a season with an ending that was kind of disappointing. 3 stars out of 5

By Captain Purple
Back in 1967 TV producer Gerry Anderson created Captain Scarlet, a 39 half- hour episode series utilizing Supermarionation, a type of sophisticated puppetry. The series, while not the huge hit that the previous Thunderbirds was, was still well received. The series did receive some scrutiny over its violence for a childrens series and a warning had to be included to tell children not to imitate the series hero in his deadly actions. Captain Scarlet has enjoyed years of repeats and whole new generations of children have experienced the adventures of Captain Scarlet and his battles with the alien menace, The Mysterons. A few years ago, Anderson went on a quest to bring back Captain Scarlet in computer generated animation format and after a period of shopping for the best animators and companies, finally began production in early 2004. Financially a huge undertaking, the series ran into a few bumps on the way but scored some excellent talent and backers like Sony

Entertainment, to finish the project. The total amount spent is in excess of 25 million pounds and Anderson raised 12 million pounds himself. An opportunity for investors in the series was made easier with a reduced amount normally out of the range of most people. Slated for Fall of 2005 at an early evening t i m e period o n Britains I T V station, Captain Scarlet looked to finish production in July of 2005, but in a surprise move, the first 13 episodes have begun airing in England on Saturday mornings at 9:30. The remaining 13 episodes, now considered the second season, would air in the fall while a planned DVD release of the first 13 is slated for October. This move has mixed reaction as some believe that both Sony Entertainment and the UK corporation distributing the series, Granada, having s o m e financial problems, and are looking for a quicker return on this investment. There has been little time to promote the series and the older audience targeted for the early evening slot is now missing. There

is talk that a repeat of each episode may air later in the week possibly at night. There was even a chance that Captain Scarlet would have gone up against the new Doctor Who, which would have been very bad. All of this seems to point to less time and care on the distribution end of the spectrum (pun intended). On the plus side, the episodes are complete and ratings and feedback now may help tweak any problems with the second 13 episodes. The series is about a misunderstanding during first contact between the Mysterons of Mars and an Earth exploration vehicle in the year 2068. On board the vehicle, Spectrum agents Captain Black and Captain Scarlet mistake a Martian sensor beam for an attack. The Mysterons promise a war of nerves with slow and precise attacks on Earth. Spectrum, an organization of special agents now must defend Earth from these attacks. The agents of Spectrum include Captain Scarlet and Captain Blue as well as their commander, Colonel White. side has similar characters with a variety of weapons and skills that you can use during battle. Pick the Wookie, for example and you can use the powerful crossbow, activate time bombs and use a grenade launcher. Pick a sniper (my favorite) and you can target enemies from far away and take them out with one shot. The pilot can repair items and vehicles as well as build blaster cannons and so on. The Rebel Assault trooper has the big rocket launcher capable of taking out ATSTs. Once you pick a side and a character your particular objectives are made clear, but generally you attack the enemies and capture their command posts. Once you have dwindled the enemies posts and numbers down far enough, youve one the battle. There is a bit of strategy necessary as head on attacks dont always work, and thus thought-out attacks with snipers or mine planters come into play. As a character you can also control blaster cannons and a multitude of vehicles, including Tie Fighters, X- and Y- wings, speeder bikes, AT-STs and so on. These vehicles will help with your campaign.

13

The game is broken up into several levels and two modes of play, Single player and Multiplay. Single player mode puts you into a battlefront of your choice right away. The Historical Campaign level presents a series of key battles each of which you need to win in order to move onto the next. These are mixed with both sides of the war and from two time periods, the Clone War era and the Rebellion era. The Galactic Conquest level allows you to go head-tohead with the enemy and attempt to take over a number of planets to win the battle. Each scenario gives each side objectives and bonuses for capturing certain planets.

The Multiplay levels give you the chance to go up against a human opponent either at home or online. The QuickMatch option puts you into a starting mission sometimes with a predetermined side and sometimes with an option to choose the side; you still

one with a missile launcher, destroy the AT-STs, then pick the sniper to clean up the rest of the soldiers. You will occasionally see a star character like Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader. These characters help you in your task but they are very difficult to kill. Also, to the best of my knowledge there is no way that you can play a Jedi in this game.

get to pick out your character. Online play is fun but very glitchy. Characters jump around and do not move smoothly and so it can be hard to shoot them. This jitter is very annoying on some levels but not so bad on others. For the most part people on line play the game as it is intended, but you will still get the usual traitors and Command Center squatters (annoying wimps who stake out an enemy

respawning area and shoot people as they come into play; they rack up large kill numbers with this form of cheating!) Notes on single play: Given the particular situation you will need to play the right character in the right position based on his/her characteristics. For example, the Sniper player needs to be calm and kept away from the front line. They can be very powerful and you can rack up a good numbers of kills. There were times when I just sat still and shot every stormtrooper that came into my sights. In close combat the sniper loses any advantage. Time will tell what characters work the best in different settings and at different points during each battle.

Vehicles including the AT-STs and other ground vehicles are fun to drive. Stepping on people or running them over will be highlights. The space craft are very hard to fly and are very fast. Speaking of fast, the speeder bikes are great on Tatooine (no trees) but are tough on the moon of Endor (trees). Gameplay varies from easy to really hard. At some levels it is pretty easy to take out the enemies while at others you will have trouble figuring out the proper strategy. On most levels your goal is to take over enemy outposts, but on others the objective may be to protect the shield When your character dies you have a generators on Hoth, or to blow up the choice of where to respawn and which shield generators on Endor. character to use, so it is possible to pick

THE GALLIFREYAN GAZETTE

Negatives: First off, I find the area of play to be too confining. This is especially true when I am banking an X-wing to strafe an enemy base and the annoying Leaving Battlefield message blinks on screen. You have the ability to order your troops, and they will listen to you, for a little while. One time on Tatooine I decided to pilot a landspeeder behind enemy lines and attack from there. I had plenty of room and so ordered 5 or 6 guys to hop in. I then got near the enemy post untouched and ordered my guys to get out, but no one was onboard. I was alone. Well, at least until an AT-ST stomped me into the ground.

make Battlefront boring. Sure, the settings are different, but it all comes down to the same tactics and goals. Choosing different characters can increase play interest. Positives: This is the first Star Wars game I have purchased for the Xbox and for the most part I am very impressed. The graphics are great and the details of the Star Wars Universe are captured well with this game. This is a game of secondary characters, so you wont be playing Luke Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi. Playing different roles in different battles will give you a chance to rewrite history at times, like stopping the rebels on Endor, or preventing the Empire from overrunning Hoth. There are limitations and some repetition that may affect long-term interest in this game. However, there is also a lot of enjoyment to be had in this game as mentioned above. It is not perfect but if you ever wanted to be part of the Star Wars universe, this is certainly an excellent way. Oh, yeah, you can also shoot Ewoks.

A little too close that time, ouch!! Also, blowing up a shield generator is something I have yet to figure out. I can lob grenades in and damage it but not totally knock it out. Bringing other troops with me sounded like a great idea, but when everybody starts lobbing grenades within a closed areaSoon I was alone again as everyone had wiped each other out. So, the AI is not that bright. There is not enough of a difference in the variety of missions offered which can
