LESSON PLAN 5

Activity : SHOW THE TIME

Class level : Year 4 -6
Time Suggested : 60 minutes
Materials : Every 2/3 pupils should have a computer, a clock face on
transparency, a round protractor on transparency and a
Calculator

Objectives:
a) Pupils should be able to understand the relationship between time and angle.
b) Pupils should be able to change minutes into angle using the given equation.
c) Pupils should be able to draw the estimated hour hand and accurate minute hand
using PC Logo.

Preparations:

1. Get a diagram of a blank clock face and a round protractor from the internet.
Here, I provided both diagrams in Appendix I and II. Adjust the size so that it will
fit on the ‘Graphic Window’ of PC Logo.
2. Copy them on transparencies. To avoid the use of too many transparencies, two
diagrams can be put on one transparency.

Teaching Procedures:

1. Give the two diagrams of a clock and the round protractor. Instruct pupils to
overlap them. The compass should be on top so that its small number will not be
blocked by the time number. Teacher should also project the overlapped diagram
in front of the class as below.

Overlapped
diagrams of a
clock face and a
Protractor
2. Discuss with the relationship between minutes and angles from the overlapped
diagrams, for example, 15 mins = 90o, 30 mins = 180 o, 45 mins = 270 o and 60
mins/1 hour = 360 o.

Task 1 – Ask pupils to find “How many degrees are there for every 1 minute?”
(Encourage the pupils to use the calculator). Ask pupils who give the answer
correctly to demonstrate how they get the answer.
Solution:
360o ÷ 60 mins = 6o

3. Discuss the relationship between hour and angles from the overlapped diagrams,
for example, 1 hr = 30o, 2 hrs = 60o, 3 hrs = 90o…….12hrs = 360o.

4. At the primary level, the pupils are not expected to draw the hour hand
accurately. Instead they are required to estimate only. In the next step, show
the following diagrams.

Then, discuss:
Between 3 to 4 or between 10 to 11, how many hour is there? Answer = 1 hour.
How many sections are there between 3 to 4 or between 10 to 11? Answer = 5.

Task 2 – Completing the table below.

Location of Hour Hand is exactly at: What is the time?

3
st
1 line after 3
2nd line after 3
3rd line after 3
4th line after 3
Exactly at 4

Pupils are expected to figure out: 60 minutes ÷ 5 sections = 12 minutes

Expected answers:
Location of Hour Hand What is the time?
Exactly at 3 3.00 o’clock
st
1 line after 3 3.12
2nd line after 3 3.24
rd
3 line after 3 3.36
4th line after 3 3.48
Exactly at 4 4.00
5. Task 3 - By referring to the overlapped diagram, complete the table below:
Location of Hour Hand What is the time? How many degrees?
Exactly at 3 3.00 o’clock
1st line after 3 3.12
2nd line after 3 3.24
3rd line after 3 3.36
4th line after 3 3.48
Exactly at 4 4.00

Expected answer:
Location of Hour Hand What is the time? How many degrees?
Exactly at 3 3.00 o’clock 90o
1st line after 3 3.12 96o
2nd line after 3 3.24 102o
3rd line after 3 3.36 108o
4th line after 3 3.48 114o
Exactly at 4 4.00 120o

Expand the discussion:

• The patterns: 1st line - (90o + 6 o) = 96 o
2nd line - (90 o + 6 o + 6 o) = 102 o
3rd line - (90 o + 6 o + 6 o + 6 o) etc.. = 108 o

• If the time is 3.40:

Where should the Hour Hand be? Answer = Between 3rd and 4th line.
What is the estimated degree? Solution = 108 o + (half of 6 o)
= 108 o + 3 o
= 111 o
Where should the Minute Hand be?
Solution:
40 mins x 6 = 240o (learnt at stage 2)

• It the time is 5.48:

How many degrees should the Hour Hand be?
Solution:
5 hrs = 5 x 30 o =150 o (learnt at stage 3)
48 (at 4th line) ∴(150 o + 6 o + 6 o + 6 o + 6 o) = 174 o

How many degrees should the Minute Hand be?

Solution:
48 mins x 6 = 288o

• If the time is 5.53:

How many degrees should the hour hand be estimated?
Solutions:
53 is between 4rd and 5th line,
∴(150 o + 6 o + 6 o + 6 o + 6 o + 3o) = 177 o
• What is the estimated degrees for 11.19
Solutions:
11 hrs = 11 x 30 o =330 o
19 is between 1rd and 2th line,
∴(330 o + 6 o + 3o) = 339 o

6. Working with PC Logo.

• Paste transparency of the clock face on the ‘Graphic Window’ of PC Logo.
• Put the centre of the clock exactly on the ‘Turtle’.
Using the basic PC Logo Command, draw the Hour and the Minute Hands to
show the following times. Remember to draw the Minute Hand longer than
the Hour Hand.

Exercises:
Show the following times in PC Logo.
a) 1.00
b) 2.36
c) 4. 58
d) 5.30
e) 7.24
f) 9.15
g) 10.33
