University of Delaware News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 6, 2012 Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa goes Transnational to Blue Hen territory NEWARK, Del. For the first time, the University of Delaware presents the Transnational Encounters series, bringing renowned authors from all over the world to speak with university students and the local community. Next week, Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa will make his debut in Delaware at his keynote address discussing transnationalism and diversity. The entire series is meant to bring unique perspectives to the campus, said Dr. Richard Zipser, coordinator of the Transnational Encounters series. As a university, we pride ourselves on our commitment to diversity and opportunity. Mario Vargas Llosas visit to campus provides the opportunity to hear and engage with a leading scholar of diverse experiences. Vargas Llosa has won numerous literary awards with the most prestigious being the 2010 Nobel Literary Prize, which was awarded to him by the Swedish Academy for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individuals resistance, revolt and defeat. The Peruvian author is one of six high-profile authors invited to speak at the university over a four-semester period. The two-day visit will include both a public lecture and readings from his most famous works in Spanish as well as English with various faculty members from the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department joining Vargas Llosa. I was ecstatic when our team was able to secure such a renowned Latin American author, said Dr. Cynthia Schmidt-Cruz, a Spanish professor at the university. We have been waiting a long time for a program like this and Vargas Llosa is, in my opinion, the best addition. Vargas Llosa is not the first prestigious author to come to the small town of Newark, Del., but is only the second Nobel Laureate to make the visit. Earlier this year, Jean-Marie Gustave Le-Clzio also came to speak as part of this Transnational Encounters series supported by the College of Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center, and other departments at the university such as the English Language Institute, the Department of Political Science and International Relations and the Honors and First Year Experience programs. When my professor told me that Mario Vargas Llosa was visiting campus, I couldnt believe it, said Danielle Clifford, senior at the university. Throughout my years here Ive read a few excerpts from his novels and short stories. This is our chance to see them come to life right before our eyes. *Full schedule of events is attached. ### For More Information: Chelsey Rodowicz, director of media relations chelseyr@udel.edu (302) 831-5286
