Thank you for listening to Fluent French Audio! In Transcript B, we have included a word-forword translation of your CD or cassette.

This will help you spend more time listening and less time thumbing through your French dictionary. Our translation is unique: rather than telling you what an English speaker would have said, we aim for a semi-literal translation that makes the French speakers word choice and sentence structure clear. We underline individual words that cannot be translated literally and groups of words that need to be understood as a whole. However, we do not underline common expressions that intermediate learners will recognize, such as tout le monde and aprs-midi. We hope you enjoy listening to these recordings as much as we enjoy bringing them to you! Sincerely,

se tromper = to be mistaken. See pages 42 and 75 for other examples of se tromper. Compare to tromper quelquun = to trick someone; to mislead someone; to cheat on someone. See page 44 for an example of someone being fooled (tromp) by something. chaleureux = warm. la chaleur = heat. un lieu commun = a common expression; a common argument; a commonly held tenet. tre sur la route : this is not a common expression. Literally, to be on the road; to be in the road (as the person who is giving kisses to all of the members of a group passes by.) In English speaking countries, it is common to see one person approach a group and shake hands with one or two members of the group and acknowledge others with a nod and a hello or simply wait until later to say hello if the other members of the group are engaged in conversation. In France, it is common to see one person who meets a group take the time to shake the hands or give a kiss to every member of the group. On a different note, a French person does not give a hello handshake or kiss to the same person twice in one day. If he has already greeted one of the members of the group, he will skip that person, perhaps saying, On sest dj dit bonjour. (Weve already said hello.) faire partie de quelque chose = to be part of something. une partie = a part. un lot = a batch, a set, a lot. See another example of faire partie de on page 29. peine = hardly, barely.
