Maddie #712 Survival in the Middle of Nowhere The author Gary Paulsen wrote Hatchet, an action, suspense, survival

story. It is Newberry Honor winner! Brian Robeson was sitting in a Cessna 406 Bushplane. As a 13 year old boy, Brains parents were divorced. Its the first time he was going to stay with his father in the summer. His dad was living in the oil fields in Northern Canada. While driving to the airport in Hampton, New York to meet the plane, Brian started thinking about the secret and can barely hold it in! Brian's story shows that he was truly a man that is forever changed. At the beginning of the story, Brian was in a Cessna 406 Bushplane and was sitting in the copilot seat. Looking out the window, Brian was thinking about the secret and couldnt get him mind off of it! The pilot started having bad aches and then he had a heart attack! Brian was then flying the plane alone as a 13 year old boy! He had some experience, because the pilot let Brian fly the plane for a little bit. Then Brian tried to stay as calm as he could but he was scared at times, like when he couldnt hear anything through the radio! He eventually crashed the plane in an L shape lake. In the middle of the story, Brian is trying to make a fire with bark and his $20 bill he found in his pocket. Brian needed a friend. And the fire just happened to be that friend. The fire kept Brian warm; and Brian struggled to find a way to keep it going! Then Brian just needed things to make the fire he used birch bark and $20 dollar bill. It was hard for Brian to make the fire because he didnt have matches or anything, well he had some bark. While the fire was

going, it protected Brian from mosquitos and other bugs! This so called friend protected Brian from a lot of stuff! At the end of the story, Brian was going to get the survival pack out of the plane but needs something to get out there. Brian made a raft out of logs and goes out to the lake. While trying to get into the plane Brian pulled out his hatchet and started hitting the plane, then dropped his hatchet! He had to go down and get it. Brian almost drowned but came up in the nick of time and survived! Then Brian opened up the survival pack and felt thankful for everything he had. Brian realizes that he felt comfortable where he is, and felt at home. In conclusion, Brian's story shows that he was truly a man that is forever changed. Brian had to fly the plane, then had to make a fire, then went to the plane to get the survival kit. The pilot of the rescue plane said, I heard your emergency transmitter- then I saw the plane when I came over. Man your him aren't you youre that kid? They quit looking, a month, no, almost two months ago. You're him, aren't you?
