Julia Larson Group Management Assignment Alicia Pence 4/15/13 Preparation: To prepare for this assignment, I took some

baseline data so that I could get a feel for how many unexpected behaviors occurred during class. I also prepared some scenarios to go over with the students so that we can read them together and determine whether the actions of the people in the scenarios was expected or unexpected. I also created a poster to bring to class so that we can chart our unexpected behaviors for each class.

Objective: During 6th grade ELA, students will demonstrate 4 unexpected behaviors (outlined below) or less, for a period of 4 days. Mastery will be when students can do this for 5 consecutive trials. Unexpected behaviors: -talking off subject -touching inappropriately, anything other than a high five or hand shake -pouting (eye rolling, sighing, refusing to talk, putting head down) -Being disrespectful (mocking, talking back, ignoring) Expected behaviors: -Asking questions only about what we are working on -Talking about what is bothering us and then letting it go and moving on -Touching others appropriately (high fiving and hand shaking) -Being respectful (following directions, answering questions when asked)

Getting Students Focused: To get students focused I will ask for their attention and remind them about the expected and unexpected behaviors. We will review how many unexpected behaviors weve had that week and whether or not we are close to meeting our goal for the week.

Instructional Delivery: Prior to recording our unexpected behaviors as a class, I will give some instruction to review what unexpected and expected behaviors are even though the students have had some instruction in this area prior. We will discuss the unexpected behaviors outlined above within the context of a situation and then we will discuss how they couldve handled it differently. We will also discuss scenarios where the students handles a situation with expected behaviors and we will talk about why that was the right way to handle that situation. I will explain that we are going to keep track of our unexpected behaviors as a class. Each time one of the students demonstrates an unexpected behavior we will keep track of it on our chart. Our goal is to get 4 or less Monday through Thursday so that Friday they can earn a prize. We will brainstorm prizes together, but rewards could be 10 minutes of movie time, listening to music, games, or snacks.

Individual and Group Behavior Management: At the beginning of each class period the students will be reminded that we are about to start class and the students should get focused and be ready to display expected behaviors. After that whenever any student demonstrates one of the unexpected behaviors below I will ask that

student whether what they just did was unexpected or expected and discuss what they couldve done differently next I will mark an expected behavior on our chart for that day. At the end, of the class we will take a minute to look at how many unexpected behaviors we had for the day and talk about how we can improve for the next day. During class specific verbal praise such as, I like how everyone stayed on topic during warm ups and saved their other questions for after class, can be used occasionally when students are displaying expected behavior. Be sure to pinpoint what about their behavior was expected. After 4 days of 4 or less unexpected behaviors students can earn a prize.

Evaluation of Student Progress: Students will be evaluated as a class on whether or not they are able to lower their average of about 9 unexpected behaviors per class period to about 1 unexpected per class period. We will track their progress as a class on a graph at the end of each week.
