TEXTUAL EVIDENCE

- Is proof from the reading text that supports our answer, opinion, or idea.

STEPS IN SUPPORTING AN ANSWER WITH TEXTUAL EVIDENCE

1. STATE YOUR ANSWER, OPINION, OR IDEA

- When your teacher asks you a question on a reading text, respond to it by

restating the question and then adding your answer.

Example:

Your teacher may ask you, "Why did Rizal write the Noli Me Tangere?"

You may start your answer by restating the question this way: "Rizal wrote
the Noli Me Tangere.....". Then add your answer "....to show the faults not
just of the Spanish colonizers in the Philippines but also the faults of the
Filipinos."

You may base your answer on two things:

Prior Knowledge

- When you have previous experience or have read about a

particular topic, you will have some insights into it before reading it.

Inference

- is a conclusion reached based on evidence and reasoning.

2. CITE EVIDENCE IN THE TEXT TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER OR

IDEA

- Give supporting evidence from the text by directly quoting or paraphrasing

it. A direct quotation is a report of an author’s or speaker’s exact words.

Example:

The author, Michael "Xiao" Chua, explains, “Noli Me Tangere was less a
condemnation of our colonial masters than a warning to us Filipinos.
However, it is also about our faults and weaknesses.”

*Note that parentheses enclose the directly quoted parts.

Some direct quotations starters:

The author says, “_____.”

The author stresses, “_____.”

The writer maintains, “_____.”

Nick Joaquin writes, “_____.”

According to the author, “_____.”

As stated in the text, “_____.”

- Aside from using a direct quotation you may also use your paraphrase of a
relevant part of the article as evidence.

Paraphrasing – is expressing the meaning of something written or spoken

using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.

Some starters:

The text states

The text describes

The author explains

The writer shows

For example, the author discusses

Early in the text, the author discusses

For instance, the author emphasizes

3. EXPLAIN THE EVIDENCE

- Explain how the quote(s) or paraphrase(s) you pointed out support your
answer or idea.

Example:

“Noli Me Tangere was less a condemnation of our colonial masters than a warning to
us Filipinos. It is also about our faults and weaknesses.”

You may explain this quote this way:

“This shows that, in Noli Me Tangere, Rizal did not just expose the evils of the
colonial rule, but he also admonished the Filipinos to change their ways.”
