I. ACTIVITY
Direction: Examine the sentences below:
a. Filipinos become cautious with their health during this pandemic.
b. I think eating banana keeps you away from corona virus.

II. ANALYSIS
Process Questions:

1. Which statement can be proven as true or false?


2. Which statement cannot be proven at all?

III. ABSTRACTION
OPINION
 It is defined as a view, judgment, or appraisal drawn from facts
 It is usually a concept or impression based on factual evidence.

Example:
“ The Philippines is one of the best tourist destinations on the planet”.

ASSERTION
 Is a declaration or expression of strong belief towards a particular topic often
without evidence.
 It usually includes forceful or confident and positive statements regarding a belief
or a fact.
 In contrast to an opinion, an assertion, which is usually subjective, expresses
vindication, mostly with no support or evidence.
Example:
“The Philippines is the happiest country in the world”.

Commonplace assertions or stereotypes


 These are statements that sound true but are generally based on common
opinions.
Example:
1. Men are always stronger than women.
2. Blue is for boys while pink is for girls.

SIGNAL WORDS for commonplace assertions or stereotypes

TYPES OF ASSERTION
1. Basic Assertion – is a type of assertion that directly expresses the writer’s feelings and
beliefs through simple statements. This type is usually used in standing up for personal
beliefs. This is usually used in writing formal papers like thesis and dissertation.
Example:
1. The writer is well-versed in the Spanish culture.
2. The character is an epitome of good daughter.

b. Emphatic Assertion – involves expressing empathy and expounding on how the writer
understands the feelings and emotions of the literary author. This type may be used in both
formal and informal writing.
Example:
1. Having Spanish origin, the author loves topics about Spanish culture.

c. I-Language Assertion – expresses the feelings and preferences of the writer. This type is
called I-language because the writer usually uses the pronoun “I” in asserting disagreement or
if the author wants to express negative feelings or opinions. This type is often used in writing
reviews, reaction or reflection papers.
Example:
I Like how the author explores the Spanish culture.

Keep in mind that statement of OPINION…


 Usually starts with signal phrases such as I think or I believe and have words like
best, worst, beautiful, outstanding or should.
 Has to do with one’s preferences or emotions.

Examples:
1. Chocolate ice cream is the best flavor of ice cream sold.
2. Ice cream sundaes should always come with a cherry on top.
3. I think my outlook in life was changed by the pandemic.

On the other hand, the statement of ASSERTION…


 Does not start with the phrase I think or I believe.
 Is considered a declaration, as if were true even though it may not be.

V. EVALUATION
Direction: Underline the term that best completes the meaning of each sentence. Choose from
the options provided inside the parentheses.

VI. ASSIGNMENT
Direction: Write a short essay about any familiar topic or issue you have in mind. Make sure
to formulate opinions and assertions that you will include in your writing. It must be neatly
written on 1 whole sheet of paper. Follow the proper format in writing an essay. Use the
rubrics below as your guide in evaluating your work.
