appreciation of East Asian culture (Taiwan); and,

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

You are free to communicate your thoughts and to express your

opinion, which is part of your life as a child, as a student, as a group
member and as a citizen of this country.
An opinion is something which can’t be proven and they based on
someone’s thoughts, feelings and understanding. There are words that will
help you that you are being given an opinion and not a fact.
In sharing your opinion about something you have to convince others
to believe your point, So, you must include reasons to support your
opinion. You may use the guide questions and the organizer below.

Example: What’s your Favorite Tourist Spot?

1) Choose a favorite spot. Why is it your favorite? (Write your opinion.)
2) Next, write one reason in each box supporting your opinion.
3) When done, reread your opinion and reasons

Reason 1 The weather is cold unlike other areas in the
Philippines.
Reason 2 There is a wide scenery of nature such as the fields,
mountains, and sky.
Reason 3 The rich culture of the people are reflected in the land.

In expressing our opinions, we can use words or phrases to show our

feelings, emotions and attitude towards something and these are called opinion-
marking signals. They are helpful clues in the forms of words and phrases that
assist us in identifying opinion statement. They are found mostly at the beginning of
the sentences. They introduce one's opinion.
The following are examples of opinion-marking signals.

Blogger Alice Bryant shares the following helpful concepts in expressing

opinion using the conventions of English.
Common phrases are used to express your opinion or point of view: I think, I
believe, I feel, In my opinion, and I would say.

Example: In my opinion, Bangkok has the best street food.

Sometimes you can use the following adverbs to strengthen your
opinion such as: really, strongly and truly.

Example: I really think, Bangkok has the best street food. I have never seen
more choices of what to eat – and everything I’ve tried has been delicious!

Formal phrases are used in formal situations like business meeting, conference or
in formal paper: From my point of view, From my perspective, In my view or It seems
to me that

Example: In my view, cruise ships should be banned. They produce massive

amounts of waste and use the dirtiest fuel in the world.
