Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in


each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in


answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Target

The aggressiveness you feel when you have expressed your opinions is actually
making you a stronger person. You are opening your door in the world of self-
confidence. Use every opportunity to open dialogue and to really listen to what other
person says.
Having your own opinion helps you build authority. Sharing or expressing your
opinion is making your own identity.
This lesson will guide you on how you can share your own opinion and make
your stand about issues that affect your daily life. As you go through this Alternative
Instructional Resource, you will understand that sharing and listening to one’s
opinion is one way of gaining information.

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

Use opinion-marking signals to share ideas


Define opinion
Enumerate opinion-marking signals
Distinguish opinion from fact
Write a composition about a certain issue using opinion-marking signals

Jumpstart

You often hear somebody says in my own opinion, or others might


say in my own understanding when they express their own opinions. In
this lesson, you will learn how you can express your opinions and how
you can make others believe in your opinion.

(Pre-test) Activity 1: Directions: Analyze the following sentences. Write the letter
of the sentence that expresses opinion on your answer sheet.

1. A. Eat Bulaga is the best entertaining noon time show.


B. President Rodrigo R. Duterte is the 16th President of the Philippines.
C. Dengue fever is fatal not only among children but also to adults.
2. A. Bees have stings.
B. He was born on January 4, 2005.
C. Christmas is the happiest holiday in the whole year.
D. Proteins from meat, poultry, and milk build and repair tissues.
3. A. Gibran died at the age of 48 in New York City.
B. No force on earth can separate soul mates.
C. The WHO recognized the spread of COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11,

D. The COVID-19 is caused by a new coronavirus that has spread throughout
the world.

Activity 2: Directions: Determine whether the sentence about COVID 19


expresses opinion or fact. Write F if fact; O if opinion.

1. The most common symptoms of COVID 19 are cough, fever, and tiredness.
2. Most people think that the immediate risk of becoming seriously ill from the
virus that causes COVID-19 is low.
3. I think people who were infected of the disease will no longer catch the virus.
4. I know you will have to agree that only children and the seniors are at risk of
getting the virus.
5. The best home remedy for COVID 19 is gargling with salt.
6. Based on what I know, COVID 19 is a pulmonary disease.
7. Some people strongly believe that drinking lots of water flushes out the new
coronavirus.
8. The new coronavirus was first identified on December 31, 2019.
9. I am convinced that coronavirus can be contracted from food or packaging from
grocery stores.
10. Garlic might slow down the growth of coronavirus.

Opinion-marking signals

What is an opinion?

An opinion refers to a personal belief or judgment. It relates to how someone feels


about something. Others may agree or disagree with an opinion, but they cannot
prove or disprove it.

What is opinion-marking signals?


Opinion-marking signals introduces one’s personal point of view, in a specific time
with his own viewpoint and style about a topic or issue which complements the
sentence.

Here are commonly used opinion-marking signals:


I think … From my point of view …
I believe … It’s my belief …
I feel … Based on what I know …
In my opinion … Speaking for myself …
My favorite … I know you will have to agree that…
The best… It seems to me that …
As far as I understand … My personal view is that …
In my experience … I am confident that…
I strongly believe … As far as I know …
I am convinced … From what I know …

Examples:

1. I strongly believe that the Provincial Government of La Union is strictly


implementing health protocols amidst COVID 19.
2. In my opinion, the event of distance learning is an opportunity for family
bonding.
3. As far as I understand, playing Mobile Legends can be profitable.
4. It seems to me that millennial learners prefer face-to-face learning rather than
distance learning.
5. I know you will have to agree that Filipinos are the happiest people in the
world.

These words are also opinion markers:

Always/Never Definitely Inferior/Superior

1. Christmas is definitely the happiest season of the year.


2. My mother is the best mother in the world.
3. Cats are better pets than dogs.
4. The year 2020 is the worst year for Filipinos.
5. Reading is more enjoyable than playing mobile legends.

Note: The sentences above are opinions because the readers might have other
point of view.

Opinions cannot be proved, however, they can be supported by


facts and other knowledgeable opinions. Facts can be proven with
evidence, statistics, records, photographs, data, etc. Facts tell us what
happened, and can be verified to be true or false. Opinions are
judgments that cannot be proven true or false.

Activity 3 : Let’s play Fact or Bluff


Directions: Read and analyze the following sentences. Then draw smiley if
the sentence states a fact and sad face if it is an opinion. Write your answers
on a separate sheet of paper.

3. The bats in the cave are very scary.

Activity 4: Practice Makes Perfect

As you go on with the activities, add in your word bank the fact-signal words
like numbers, dates, and statistics, while opinion- signal words include "prefer,"
"think," "feel," "should," and "best."

Directions: Read the sentences below then copy the words that make
the sentence fact or opinion.

3. She thinks that her life is useless without a friend.

Directions: Compare Fact and Opinion by completing the table below.
