To put it simply, an informative writing aims
to give information, persuasive writing aims to
persuade an audience to believe an opinion or
assertion or do an action, and argumentative
writing aims to prove that your opinion or
stand is more correct and acceptable than that
of the opposing argument.

Pointers in Writing a Text

1. First, identify the purpose of your
speech. What is the purpose of my speech? Is
it to inform, to persuade or to argue?
2. If your purpose is to write an
informative text, you have to list all the
information and details that you want your
readers or listeners to know, like definition,
description, cause and effect relationship,
steps or process. You might as well include
facts, statistics and other related concepts.
Example: You will be writing about the topic,
“Education in the New Normal”. Since this is
an informative essay, you have to inform your
readers about the education in the new normal.
You have to give definition or description of
education in the new normal. You may describe
or give details how teaching and learning
process works in the new normal.
3. If your purpose is to write a
persuasive text, you need to specify or state
what you want your reader or listener to

are facing right now. You need to encourage
them or persuade them to continue learning. In
order to persuade or convince your reader to
enroll or study, you need to provide reasons

correct one. You need to prove that what you
are saying is true and more acceptable than
your opposing side.
Example: You will be writing about the topic,
“Education in the New Normal”. Since this is
an argumentative essay, you need to look for
the issue within the topic. The issue can be an
argument whether to continue learning or not.
If your stand is that education or learning must
continue, you need to give reasons and cite
pieces of evidences that support your stand.
You also need to refute the claim of the
opposing argument and prove that learning in
the new normal is far better, necessary, and
beneficial compare to not studying at all.

For you to be able to understand the

differences of the three writing techniques,
read the sample texts below.

INFORMATIVE ESSAY

How to Travel Solo Successfully

James Baldwin said it best. "I met a lot of
people in Europe. I even encountered myself"
(Baldwin, 2014). Solo travel will not only reveal
colorful new heights, it will also introduce you
to yourself - your resiliency, your sense of
adventure, your independence. Learning how
to travel solo is as intrinsic as tying your shoes
and it is something that can be learned today.
The first, most obvious, way to travel solo
successfully is to research your area. The
number one indicator of a tourist is someone
stopped in the middle of the sidewalk scanning
the GPS on their phone. According to World
Travel News Report, four in fifteen tourists will
be pickpocketed if they stand still on a busy
street (Parker, 2019). Arrive well-informed on
the area. Understand the public transportation
system to the point where you can blend in as
a local.
Also, in line with safety, you may want to
splurge on accommodations. You can stay
alone in a hostel, but read the reviews
carefully. Make sure it is in a safe area and
security is a priority for them. Might even want
to consider a private room, some of which
include a private bath.
In terms of fun, pack for your lack of
companionship. Bring a blank journal to
record your adventures. Pack a paperback to
enjoy while you wait out a rainstorm in a coffee
shop. World traveller Samantha Bymes says, “I
never travel with friends. When I’m exploring a
new continent, my journal is my only sidekick”
(Bymes, 2018).
This allows her to absorb her new
surroundings, make new acquaintances, and
focus on the act of encountering herself.
Blymes continues, “We lost sight of ourselves
in the day-to-day. We focus on work, family, to
do-lists, chores. Solo travel allows us to return
to ourselves so that, when we resume our day-
to-day activities, we can give our all” (Blymes,
2018).
Learning how to travel solo successfully is an
achievable feat. You can stay safe if you
remain knowledgeable on the area and choose
your accommodations wisely. Beyond that, you
can experience true transformation through
the simple act of carrying a tattered old
journal. What do you say? Will you explore solo
travel? Choose wisely, for it just might change
your life forever.

PERSUASIVE ESSAY
Why Students Should Eat Breakfast Every
Day
A lot of people, especially young people, go
through the day without having breakfast.
Many people believe that it is not necessary or
they say that they don’t have time for that, and
begin their day with no meal. I believe that
everyone should eat breakfast before going to
their activities.
The first reason why you should eat
breakfast before going to school is for your
health. When you skip breakfast and go to
school, you are looking for a disease because
it’s not healthy to have empty stomach all day
long. It’s very important to have a meal and not
let your stomach work empty. All you are going
to get is gastritis and a lot of problems with
your health if you don’t eat breakfast.
Another reason for eating breakfast is
because you need food for you do well in your
classes. Your body and your brain are not
going to function as good they could because
you have no energy and no strength. When you
try learning something and having nothing in
your stomach, you are going to have a lot of
trouble succeeding. A lot of people think that
they should not eat because they are going to
feel tired, but that’s not true. Breakfast is not a
very big meal, and on the contrary, you're
going to feel tired if you don’t have breakfast
because you have spent the entire previous
night without food.
The last reason to have breakfast every day is
because you can avoid diseases if you eat some
breakfast in the morning. If you don’t eat, you
are going to get sick, and these diseases will
have a stronger effect on you because you’re
going to get sick easier than people who have
breakfast every day.
You have to realize that breakfast is the most
important meal of the day, and you cannot
skip it without consequences for your health,
your school and your defense mechanism. It is
better to wake up earlier and have a good
breakfast that run to school without eating
anything. It is time for you to do something for
your health, and eating breakfast is the better
way to start your day.

Mull Over/ Explanation:
The essay that you have read is an example
of a persuasive essay. Here, the writer
persuades you, the reader and student, to eat
breakfast every day. In order for you to be
convinced that eating breakfast every day is
important, the writer presented different
reasons, as when you skip breakfast you are
looking for a disease; you need food for you to
do well in your classes and when you eat
breakfast every day, you can avoid diseases.

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

As online learning becomes more common

and more and more resources are converted to
digital form, some people have suggested that
public libraries should be shut down and, in
their place, everyone should be given an iPad
with an e-reader subscription.
Proponents of this idea state that it will
save local cities and towns money because
libraries are expensive to maintain. They also
believe it will encourage more people to read
because they won’t have to travel to a library to
get a book; they can simply click on what they
want to read and read it from wherever they
are. They could also access more materials
because libraries won’t have to buy physical
copies of books; they can simply rent out as
many digital copies as they need.
However, it would be a serious mistake to
replace libraries with tablets. First, digital
books and resources are associated with less
learning and more problems than print
resources. A study done on tablet vs book
reading found that people read 20-30% slower
on tablets, retain 20% less information, and
understand 10% less of what they read
compared to people who read the same
information in print.
Additionally, staring too long at a screen
has been shown to cause numerous health
problems, including blurred vision, dizziness,
dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much
higher instances than reading print does.
People who use tablets and mobile devices
excessively also have a higher incidence of
more serious health issues such as
fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal
tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. I know
that whenever I read from my e-reader for too
long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck
hurts. We should not add to these problems by
giving people, especially young people, more
reasons to look at screens.
Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to
assume that the only service libraries offer is
book lending. Libraries have a multitude of
benefits, and many are only available if the
library has a physical location. Some of these
benefits include acting as a quiet study space,
giving people a way to converse with their
neighbors, holding classes on a variety of
topics, providing jobs, answering patron
questions, and keeping the community
connected. One neighborhood found that, after
a local library instituted community events
such as play times for toddlers and parents,
job fairs for teenagers, and meeting spaces for
senior citizens, over a third of residents
reported feeling more connected to their
community. Similarly, a Pew survey conducted
in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of
American adults feel that closing their local
library would have a major impact on their
community. People see libraries as a way to
connect with others and get their questions
answered, benefits tablets can’t offer nearly as
well or as easily.
While replacing libraries with tablets may
seem like a simple solution, it would encourage
people to spend even more time looking at
digital screens, despite the myriad issues
surrounding them. It would also end access to
many of the benefits of libraries that people
have come to rely on. In many areas, libraries
are such an important part of the community
network that they could never be replaced by a
simple object.

Mull Over/ Explanation:

The essay that you have read is an
example of an argumentative essay. Here the
writer tries to argue that we should not replace
libraries with tablets. The writer acknowledges
the opinion of the opposing side by citing,

“Proponents of this idea state that it will

save local cities and towns money because
libraries are expensive to maintain. They
also believe it will encourage more people to
read because they won’t have to travel to a
library to get a book; they can simply click
on what they want to read and read it from
wherever they are.” However, in the next
statements, the writer refuted/ contradicted this
argument. He provided reasons and pieces of
evidence that proved that his claim/
proposition, “it would be a serious mistake to
replace libraries with tablets” is correct and
more acceptable than the opposing side.

III. INTEGRATION

EVALUATION
ACTIVITY 1.
Directions: Write “True” if the statement is
true and “False” if the statement is false.
____________1. Persuasive writing’s purpose is to
obtain reader’s agreement on a matter of
opinion.
____________2. In persuasive writing, opinion
should be supported with evidence, rather than
a personal opinion without any factual basis.
____________3. The function of an argumentative
essay is to present both sides of an issue,
wherein one side is presented more positively
than the other one, so that readers would be
swayed to the one the author intends.
____________4. An informative essay can have
one of the following functions like; to define a
term, to compare and contrast, analyse data
among others.
____________5. Argumentative essay is based on
emotions rather than facts.

ACTIVITY 2.
Directions: Identify the following topics
whether informative, persuasive or
argumentative. Write your answer on the
space provided for.
______________1. Smoking in public places
should be banned.
______________2. How to grow organic potted
plants.
______________3. Marriage rituals around the
world.
______________4. Alcohol usage should be
controlled.
______________5. People should eat less junk
foods.

ACTIVITY 3.
Directions: Identify what writing technique
was used in the following paragraphs and
answer the questions that follow.
1. “When you woke up this morning, did
you think today would be the day you
save a life? In fact, it's quite easy to save
a life and it only takes a little bit of your
time. You don't even need to be a
paramedic or fire-fighter. All you have to
do is set aside approximately one hour to
donate blood. This essay will explore how
to donate blood, whom it benefits, and
how often you can contribute to these
life-saving measures.”
What type of writing technique
is reflected in the excerpt? Why do
you say so? Explain your answer.

2. “For various reasons, I believe that

morning recess needs to be extended
because it does not allow students
enough time to take care of their basic
needs. Some people may disagree
because they feel that this will decrease
instructional and learning time. However,
I believe that a longer recess will allow
students time to drink water and go to
the bathroom. Also, students will have
time to play team sports. Finally, the
most important reason is students will
have enough time to eat their healthy
snacks. Consequently, I will argue that
an extended recess benefits students’
learning.”
What type of writing technique
is reflected in the excerpt? Why do
you say so? Explain your answer.

3. “For many years, children growing up in

a single parent family have been viewed
as different. Being raised by only one
parent seems impossible to many yet
over the decades it has become more
prevalent. In today’s society many
children have grown up to become
emotionally stable and successful
whether they had one or two parents to
show them the rocky path that life
bestows upon all human beings. The
problem lies in the difference of children
raised by single parents versus children
raised by both a mother and a father.
Does a child need both parents? Does a
young boy need a father figure around?
Does the government provide help for
single parents? What role do step-
parents and step-siblings play? With
much speculation, this topic has become
a very intriguing argument. What people
must understand is that properly raising
a child does not rely on the structure of a
family but should be more focused on the
process or values that are taught to these
children as they learn to mature.
Children of single parents can be just as
progressive with emotional, social and
behavioral skills as those with two
parents.”
What type of writing technique
is reflected in the excerpt? Why do
you say so? Explain your answer.

GENERALIZATION
Take note that the variety of writing
technique will help you to formulate specific
reasons for your opinions. It will give you an
opportunity to research facts related to your
opinion. You will be able to understand how
writing can influence another’s thoughts or
actions. As mentioned above your speech will
be depending on your purpose if it is any of
the following, informative, persuasive, or
argumentative.

ASSIGNMENT

Directions: Read the text or selection given

below. Then, write an essay or a speech using
one of the varieties of writing technique –
informative or persuasive or argumentative – -
based on the selection read.

SOCIAL MEDIA USE
Posted by Emil Chuck, Ph.D. on

Here are a few tips and reminders to

manage your social profile online
responsibly and well.
1. Own your image, personal
information and how these are used. Pay
close attention to the Terms of Use on apps
and websites. Most people skim through
them to accept immediately, but it’s wise to
take a closer look and read all the sections
thoroughly. In some situations, you can opt
out of automatic facial recognition tags.
2. Obtain permissions when posting
videos or images of others on your networks.
3. Scrub your accounts. Posting to
social media leaves an imprint. Delete
anything that’s irrelevant, embarrassing or
disrespectful. That includes inactive
accounts. If you don’t want the entire world
to see you in a compromising position, delete
it. Reflect seriously on what you post before
you post it; if you wouldn’t want to see it on
the front page of a newspaper, or you
wouldn’t want your family to see it, do not
post it.
4. Password diligence. Update
passwords frequently. Keep an eye on any
dormant accounts if you decide not to delete
them. Inactive accounts are prone to
hackers.
5. Spread love, not hate. Share
uplifting or positive posts in support of
causes, subjects and persons you care
about.
