2
Lesson Examine biases (for or against)
1` made by the author

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

We all have different opinions. We may not notice that we are carried away by the ideas
of what we have read, watched, and heard. Our opinion, on the other hand, also affects one’s
thoughts, feelings, and actions or vice versa. In other words, we inevitably become biased and
choose what we want to believe and apply.
On the other hand, not all biases are bad. The truth is, if used only in the right way it will
also be used for good. In the same way, it is very important to detect bias because it helps us
identify the purpose of the article, movies, pictures, paintings, songs, speeches etc. It will also
strengthen our understanding of the relevance and importance of the ideas mentioned by the
author/speaker as well as the issues and assumptions or stance he/she presents.

As you go through this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Identify words/phrases that show bias in a text.
2. Determine the stand/issue of the author/writer in the reading material.

WHAT IS IT

Bias is any opinion that influences a person’s thoughts, feelings, or actions.

An author/speaker can:
• be biased against something (lean negatively against it); or
• have a bias for/toward something (lean favorably or positively toward it).

Example:
“Men have sacrificed and crippled themselves physically and emotionally to feed,
house, and protect women and children. None of their pain or achievement is

3
registered in feminist rhetoric, which portrays men as oppressive and callous
exploiters.” ― Camille Paglia

(The author/speaker has a bias for/towards gender equality. On the other hand, the
author/speaker biased against the thinking which describes men as oppressive and
reckless exploiters.)

How to determine what an author’s bias is:

Author’s Use of Evidence Author’s Use of Diction

• Does the author present more positive • Does the author use words with more
evidence for one side of an issue than the negative connotations when referring to a part
other? of an issue or specific people?
• Does the author present more negative • Does the author use words with more positive
evidence for one side of an issue than the connotation when referring to a part of an
other? issue or specific people?

WHAT’S MORE

Task 1.
DIRECTIONS: Read the statements carefully. Identify whether the author/speaker is biased
for/toward or biased against someone or something. Put a check (/) mark on the statement
indicating that the author is in favor of the message being conveyed and cross (X) mark on the
message or idea he / she is not in favor.

1. “I would rather fail doing something than fail doing nothing”

-Isko Moreno

2. “Let’s stay calm but be ready for anything”

-Vico Sotto

3. “Life is meant to be a challenge because challenges are what makes you grow”
-Manny Pacquiao

4. “We cannot free ourselves unless we move forward united in a single desire.”
-Emilio Aguinaldo

5. “What is the purpose of life? The meaning is not for you to find but for you to define”

― Carlos P. Romulo
A. Bias for/toward (in favor of)
B. Bias against (not in favor of)

Task 4:
DIRECTIONS: Read and analyze the lyrics of the song “We Are The world” and answer the
following questions:
"We Are The World"
(performed by USA For Africa)

There comes a time when we heed a certain call

When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day

That someone somewhere will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know
Love is all we need

We are the world

We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So, let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares

And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
And so, we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world

We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So, let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out

There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe

6
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well
Let's realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one

We are the world

We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So, let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

What are the assumptions

What are the issues presented?
presented?

(Bias for) In favor of (Bias against) Not in favor of

Do you agree with the ideas presented in the song? Explain why you think
that way.

answer the question that follows.

My daughter’s boyfriend is very arrogant. He visits my daughter without asking permission. Last
week he called me Annie instead of Mrs. Cruz. I quickly corrected him. So rude! His parents
should teach him how to respect others. Teenagers nowadays are ill-mannered.

The author is biased against .

Task 7.
DIRECTIONS: Read the letter to a local newspaper in which the writer argues that the Playground
Park should not be turned into a Basketball Court. Encircle all the “negative words” that are used
to influence the reader and answer the question that follows.

of the kids into a basketball court. If this malicious plan is carried out, the lovely trees in the park
will be chopped down. Values of the property within the area will drop sharply as the park fills
with the filth and debris of the bulldozers and other equipment. Obviously, no one cares about
the enjoyment of the poor kids in this place.

Lesson Identifying and recognizing
4 character traits
`

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In this lesson, you will learn to analyze and discover literature mirroring and gauging
shared values and cultural riches from across various backgrounds represented in the character
traits. From the recognition and synthesis of character traits (inner and outer), there is the
assertion of one’s unique identity and better understanding of other people.
Knowing one’s literature means studying its heritage or background. Literature gives
insight as how people coexist and harmonize having shared values in spite of differences in
upbringing. Literature mirrors its society delving into the human personification and attitude
towards life related with time and age. It is essential as human moral values are changing
according to time and age.
Character’s traits are special qualities of personality. They are more reliable than
character’s feelings or emotions, for these two can change at any moment, while traits are more
permanent. An author shows us the traits of a character through the character’s appearance,
thoughts, actions, and words.

As you go through this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Analyze literature as a mirror to a shared heritage of people with diverse background
2. Discover literature as a tool to assert one’s unique identity and to understand other people.
Identify character traits developing the theme of the selection

WHAT IS IT?

In the introductory part of our lesson, you have learned that character traits are what a
character is like on the inside. Readers can infer character traits based on the words and actions
of the character. Character traits, externally speaking, are physical traits that we see on the
outside: age, clothes, eye color, hair length and color, height, and the like. On the other hand,
internal character traits refer to thoughts, words or dialogue, actions and feelings. In addition,
Kristine Nannini of YoungTeacher Love defined character development as a collection of features
that brings the people (or animals) to life on the pages being read. It’s not just the physical

21
features, but also the personalities. It is the personal characteristics that make characters who
they are. It is one of the objectives of the author to show to the readers naturally and subtly the
development of the characters together with the plot. Character development is perceived by the
reader by paying attention to the every aspect of each characters—what they do, what they say,
what they think, how they feel, how they interact, and what others say about them in the story.
These character traits are revealed by how the characters respond to the events in the story
towards the attainment of their goals.

Well-developed characters are like people: they have traits, opinions, and motivations.
Characterizations are the methods by which story tellers reveal the traits of characters. There are
two types of characterizations: direct and indirect. Direct or explicit characterization is when a
narrator or character describes another character directly. Indirect characterization, on the other
hand, is when character traits are revealed through a character’s behavior. Recognizing these
characterizations is a higher order thinking skill that entails a reader to make inferences based on
textual details.
