Davis Salt Lake City Utah [Page 1, fd 3, item 6] 1883 Monday May 28 This morning I went to the Church Historian Office, Salt Lake City when I was set apart and ordained a Seventy under the hands of Pres. Wilford Woodruff of the quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and Pres Geo. Q Cannon and Joseph F. Smith, of the First Presidency, to a mission to the North Western States, having received a notice of may call from Pres. John Taylor on the 2d inst to be ready to leave home on the 29th of May 1883. In my ordination and being set apart, Pres. Woodruff acted as speaker. Tuesday, May 29th This morning I took [page 2, fd. 3, item 7] an affectionate parting from my Dear Mother and Father and other loved ones, going to Omaha, Neb. Via U.P.R.R in company with Elders Thos. Butler and Edmond F. Durfee. In passing up the Weber Canyon we had a slight shower of rain, accompanied with a cold wind, but on arriving at Evanston it was clear and more pleasant, the wind still blowing. Wednesday May 30th On awakening this morning it was quite cold, having been a heavy frost during the night. Water had a thin coating of ice upon it and there was some snow on the ground. We took dinner today at Cheyenne. The fire brigade were out [page 3, fd 3, item 8] here in full uniform celebrating in honor of the day decoration-day. Thursday, May 31st This morning we found ourselves passing through a beautiful, somewhat level country, and as we came nearer Omaha the fields of grain with occasionally a grove of trees made a very beautiful landscape. After leaving Grand Island, at which place we took breakfast, we had not gone more than four miles when one of the flues of the boiler bursted and we had to go back to Grand Island for another engine. During the day Bro. butler got into conversation with one Mr. R. W. Souter who had [Page 4, fd 3, item 9] been in San Francisco the past ten years but formerly of Chicago, and now on his way back to that city. He seemed desirous of obtaining information in regard to our faith and people, and at his request Bro. Butler gave him a Book of Mormon. I gave him a few tracts and when we arrived at Omaha we bade him good bye and he shook hands with us very kindly. We arrived at Council Bluffs at 4 oclock P.M. and left for Chicago at 5.20 P.M. via C & N.W. R.R. I had my supper in the dining car, and had a very good meal, with ice cream and strawberry shortcake for desert. Price 75 [cents]. Friday June 1st

[Page 5, fd 3, item 10] This morning we were passing through Iowa with a clear, beautiful day before us and I ate breakfast in the dining car. The country is a rolling prairie covered with green meadows, grain fields, and here and there a grove of beautiful trees. I could not help but admire the scenery, thinking it the most beautiful country I ever saw. We arrived at Chicago at 2.15 P.M. I going with Mrs. Warn a sister who was going to Adrian, Michigan to visit relatives and who had traveled with us from home thus far to the S.S. & M.S. Depot to see here started safely on to [Page 6, fd 3, item 11] Adrian and Bros Butler & Durfee going to the C.& C. S. depot on which road we were going to Danville, Ill. After seeing Mrs. Warn safe I started on foot for the C. & E. G depot, thinking I could find the way, but soon found myself farther away than when I started, so concluded to hire a hack to take me there for which I paid one dollar. While walking through the city saw several boats drawn by a tug past the draw bridges. As I had a letter of introduction from Wm. C. Spence to Mr. Stennett agent of the C. & N. W. R. R. and there being several hours before we should leave the city, I hired an express wagon for $1.00 to take me [Page 7, fd 3, item 12] to his office and return. He gave me a letter of introduction to Wm. Hill agt. Of the C. & E. P. R.R. by which I was able to get reduced rates over his road. After returning again to our depot, having a few hours to wait before the train would start, I took a walk out to the lake shore where boys were playing ball in the park, gentleman and ladies driving, and boats plying through the lake. We left Chicago for Danville at 8 P.M. arriving there at 1 A.M. at which place we went to an hotel for the rest of the night paying 75 [cents] each for lodging. Saturday June 2d. Left Danville at noon [Page 8, fd. 3, item 13] on accommodation for Johnsonville, arriving there at 1 oclock P.M. where we were met by Bro. John R. Johnson, Pres of the Johnsonville Branch of the church, there being several families of saints here. After taking a bath Bro. Johnson took us out into the woods to hunt squirrels, we killing two during the hunt. Soon after returning from our sport Elders Maroni W. Pratt and C. M. squires came in having been absent in the field several weeks. In the evening we all went to Bro. Wm R. Newels, who lives about miles south of Johnsonville, to visit his wife, she being very sick. On returning we got into considerable mud its being so dark through [page 9, fd 3, item 14] the woods. R.R. 1,692 mi from home. Sunday, June 3d. Attended Sunday school this morning, number present 13 in all. After dinner a meeting was held at which I bore my testimony to the work of the Lord in connection with Elders Butler, Durfee, Squires and Pratt. Bro. Pratt spoke of the restoration of the Church of God in these days. After meeting I wrote some letters and then retired for the night. Monday June 4 About noon Elder S. R. Marks, president of the conference, came and soon after dinner he called a council meeting at which Elders Pratt & Durfee were appointed to travel together, Squires and Butler together, and Pres. [Page 10, fd 3, item 15] Marks and myself together. In the evening we six elders went down to Bro. Newells and administered to Sister Newel. Pres. Marks and I remained all night and the other Brethren returned to Bro. Johnson.

Tuesday June 5 After having breakfast Bro. Marks and I returned to Johnsons and then took the train at 11.30 A.M. for Danville at which place I bot [bought] a satchel for $1.90 and a razor and apparatus for $2.00. Had lunch at a restaurant consisting of bread and butter and fish. Took train for Johnsonville at 3. P.M. and on returning found that Elders Pratt & Durfee, Squires & Butler had gone to Mr. O. Shelbys a gentleman who makes the elders welcome at his home. [Page 11, fd 3, item 16] I had a nap then supper and we sang a few songs before retiring for the night. Wednesday, June 6th After breakfast with Bro. J. R. Johnson I packed my satchel ready for traveling then wrote a letter to my friend Tom. Wilson. Rained hard this morning and when it stoped Bro. Marks and I walked down to Bro. Wm. Newels, had dinner also supper and remained all night. Sang some during the evening. Thursday June 7th Clear and pleasant this morning. Sang some songs then we (M & I) walked to Johnsonville and at one oclock took train for Shelbys via Attica. While in Attica Bro. Marks and I had our pictures taken together. [Page 12, fd 3, item 17] Rained on the road quite hard for a few minutes, but cleared off by night. Supper at Shelbys after which a meeting was held then Bro. Durfee and I went to Bro. B. Coles and stopped all night. R.R. 26 miles. Friday June 8th Clear and pleasant. After breakfast returned to Mr. O. Shelbys. About 6 oclock elders Nebeker, Squires & Butler left for their fields of labor and Bros Marks, Pratt, Durfee and I walked to Covington to see them off. While in Covington Elder Durfee and I bought us each a hat and linen duster then we four returned to Mr. Shelbys. About noon Bro. Marks and I went to Bro. Roft Grahams with him and remained [Page 13, fd 3, item 18] all night. A slight shower this afternoon. Saturday June 9 After breakfast Bro. Marks named and blessed Sister bell Smiths baby, then we returned to Shelbys. On our way we called a few minutes at Bro. Chas. Coles. dinner at Shelbys then Bro. Marks and I started over the river to Bro. Wm. Newels. Bro. Pratt taking us part of the way in a buggy, its being rainy and muddy. On coming to Bro. Newels we helped ourselves to the cherries before eating supper. Sunday, June 10th This morning we all went to Sunday school a[t] Johnsonville. After class exercises Bro. Marks and I each made a few remarks. [Page 14, fd. 3, item 19] We ate dinner at J. R. Johnsons then went to meeting. Bro Marks spoke upon the first principles of the Gospel occupying about 1 hours then I said a few words testifying to the truth of what had been said by Elder Marks. At the close of meeting returned went to Bro N. Johnsons remaining all night. Rainy during the day. Monday June 11

Clear this morning. After breakfast returned to J.R. Johnsons when they told us Sister Newel was taken much worse again, so Bros Marks, Johnson and I went directly to see her and laid hands upon her to bless her. Ate dinner at Bro. Newels and in the afternoon I went to Johnsonville to post some *Page 15, fd 3, item 20+ letters for Bro. Marks and get our mail if any, then returned to Bro. Newels ate supper and remained all night. Bro. Marks sat up with the sick. Tuesday June 12 Cloudy but no rain. Ate breakfast, dinner, and supper at Bro. Newels. During the day got some stationary at Johnsonville, wrote a letter to S. S. Tingey, one to the agt of W. St. L. & P. R.R. asking for a permit over their road, also one to Mrs. M. J. Warn at Adrian. In the afternoon picked some cherries for Sister Newel also helped milk the cows this morning and evening. Wednesday, Dec. [June] 13. Cleared off pleasant this morning but quite cool this afternoon. Took the team this morning and went to [Page 16, fd 3, item 21] Johnsonville for Bro. Newel. Returning, had dinner, wrote some letters home sending my tin type picture. Took my letters to post at Johnsonville, this afternoon, ate supper with J. R. Johnson then returned to Bro Newels and helped milk the cows. Sister Newel is improved some but suffers considerable yet. Thursday June 14 Quite cool last night and clear this morning. After breakfast helped milk the cows, took a nap then picked about four courts of cherries. In the afternoon went down to State Line for Bro. Newell on horse back, and on returning helped Bro. Marks pick cherries. While thus occupied Pres. Palmer and Elders Pratt and Durfee came. Towards [Page 17, fd 3, item 22] evening Bros Palmer, Durfree and I went to Bro. J. R. Johnsons, ate supper and remained all night. Received my first letter from home today. Friday June 15th Cloudy today, rained a little at noon. Ate breakfast and dinner at J.R. Johnsons and supper with his father, Geo. W. Johnson. After supper returned to J.R. Johnson, sang some with the elders and remained all night. Saturday June 16 A little more pleasant this morning, but quite a thunder storm last night. This forenoon Pres Palmer called a meeting of the elders, he, Elders Marks, Pratt, Durfee and I being present. Pres. Palmer gave instructions to us in regard to our duty [Page 18, fd 3, item 23] as servants of god. After meeting Elder Marks and I took the 11:30 A.M. train for Danville, he buying a suit of new clothes and duster. A new hat, bottle of ink and pen. We rode back as far as State Line, then walked the remainder of the way to Johnsonville. We then rode down to Bro. Newells in a buggy and soon after Bro. Palmer come and administered to Sister Newel. Bros Palmer, Marks & Durfee returned to Johnsonville and I remained all night at Newels. R.R. 17 mi. Sunday June 17th

Got up this morning at 4:30 oclock had breakfast at 5 and at 6.15 oclock Elder Pratt and I started for Shelbys with Bro. Newels team arriving there at 9:30 *Page 19, fd 3, item 24- shaved and washed, had dinner, then held a meeting in Shelbys dining room commencing at 2. P.M. We administered the sacrament, then Bro. Pratt spoke awhile and I gave my testimony. After meeting we returned to Bro. Newels passing through a very heavy rain on the road. Had supper and remained all night at Newells. Monday June 18th After breakfast Bro Pratt and I went with Bro. Newels team to Johnsonville. About 9 oclock we all went to the creek where bro. Palmer called a meeting under a large tree and baptized two gentlemen in the creek. Bros Palmer and Marks addressed the audience. After meeting all we elders went down [Page 20, fd 3, item 25] the creek a short distance and went in bathing. We ate dinner with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson then I wrote a letter and bro Marks and I walked down to Mr. Josephus Cronkites and remained all night. Today has been very pleasant and this evening is clear with the moon shining brightly, and while setting in the door step looking out upon this night brings thoughts of home and the past. Tuesday June 19 After breakfast I wrote a letter then Marks and I returned to Johnsonville, ate dinner with Geo. W. Johnson then we all went to Wm. Newels and administered to Sr. Newel. Read a letter and paper from home today. In the evening returned [Page 21, fd 3, item 26] to Johnsonville. Wednesday June 20. About noon went to Newels and had dinner then hoed garden and picked some cherries with Elder Marks. Pres. Palmer and others came in the afternoon and held a meeting giving thanks and praise to God for the manifestation of his power in the healing of sister Newel. Ate supper at Bro. Newels then Bros. Palmer, Marks and I came to J.R. Johnsons and remained all night. Tuesday June 21st Pleasant today and rained some in the evening. In the afternoon Bro Durfee and I went down to Bro Newels for a short time then returned to Bro. J.R. *Page 22, fd 3, item 27+ Johnsons. After supper we sang some songs together then returned for the night. Friday June 22 Remained at Johnsons till evening then Bro. Pratt and I went to Bro. Newels and remained all night. Saturday June 23 Went up to Johnsons this morning and remained near by all day then went back to Bro. Newels and Marks & I stoped all night. Recd a letter from S. J. Davis.

Sunday June 24 After breakfast Bro Marks and I went with Bro. Newels team to Johnsonville then Pres. Palmer Bros Marks, Geo. W. Johnson and I went to a meeting near Woods Mill, Ill. Bro. Palmer spoke both forenoon and [Page 23, fd. 3, item 28] afternoon and we were invited to dinner by a Mr. Wilson, which we accepted. After returning Bro. Marks and I went to bro. G. W. Johnsons to supper and remained all night. Monday June 25 This morning we returned to J. R. Johnsons and wrote a letter. Ate dinner and supper with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson. After supper attended a meeting at Wm. Newels and had the privilege of speaking a few minutes. Returned to J.R. Johnson s after meeting. Quite cool this evening. Tuesday, June 26th Very cold and stormy this morning. Wore an overcoat during the day. Bro. Marks [Page 24, fd 3, item 29] and I took the 11.30 train for Danville and while there visited Ellsworth park. Returned to Johnson in the afternoon and got rained upon while walking from State Line. Had supper and remained all night at J.R. Johnsons R. R. 17 miles. Wednesday June 27 After breakfast wrote two letters home and at 11.30 A.M. started for St. Louis in company with elders Wm. M. Palmer, S.R. Marks, and M. W. Pratt and Mr. O Shelby, arriving at 9.30 P.M. Stoped at a tavern over night. R.R. 197 miles. Thursday June 28 We visited Shaws gardens Lafayette Park and the fair grounds, and drove through Tower Grove Park during the day. [Page 25, fd 3, item 30] Also visited the firm of Bridge, Beach & Co. stove founders, where they have over 200 smolders at work. We crossed the Mississippi River, (which is very high at present, covering the R.R. near East St. Louis with about ten inches of water) on the extension bridge and same back on a ferry boat. When coming into St. Louis last evening we saw fields of grain covered with water, and houses surrounded with it, two churches being buried up to the windows. Our train ran through water for some distance. We left St. Louis this evening on the 9 oclock train going as far as Brunswick on our road to Richmond, Mo. arriving [Page 26, fd 3, item 31] at Brunswick at 3 A.M. stoping at the Armstrong House. The water being so high we could go no farter tonight. R.R. 187 miles. Friday, June 29 About noon took train for Richmond. While on the train we passed fields covered with water by the overflow of the river, and some of the road was washed out by the floods but was repaired enough to allow trains to pass. We also saw trees and grain fields which had been laid waste by a cyclone which had passed over the country a little more than a week since. On arriving at Lexington Junction we left the train going to Richmond 4 mi, in a wagon arriving there about six oclock in *Page 27, fd 3, item 32+ the evening. The object of our visit here is to visit David Whitmer, the only one living of the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon, but finding we could not see him till morning we took supper and

lodging at the Wasson House. Bro. Palmer had quite a debate during the evening with an infidel. R.R. 48 miles. Saturday June 30. After breakfast Mr. Whitmer came to the hotel and we asked him several questions in regard to the Book of Mormon. He bore testimony to the truth and divinity of the book saying the testimony recorded in the book is true. Also stated he had seen more angels than the one [Page 28, fd 3, item 33] which showed them the plates from which the book was translated. We left Richmond about 7.30 A.M. going to Lexington Junction by wagon. On our way I gave the driver some tracts. Left Lexington Juc. At 9.30 for St. Louis by rail arriving there in the evening, changing cars then went on to Johnsonville arriving at 3 oclock in the morning. R.R. 432 m. Sunday July 1st We ate breakfast with Bro. J.R. Johnson then we attended Sunday School. In the afternoon Elder Pratt and I went to Woods mill, Ill. to fill the appointment made there, holding a meeting at 3 oclock. Broth Pratt spoke upon the divinity of the book of Mormon [Page 29, fd 3, item 34] & following with my testimony. Returned to Johnson mills and remained all night with J.R. Johnson. Monday, July 2d Recd a letter from home and wrote some also. In the afternoon Bro. J.R. Johnson and all our elders went to the creek took a bath then Elders Pratt & Durfee left for their field of labor. After supper Bros. Palmer, Marks, Johnson and I went to Bro. Wm. Newels to lay hands upon sister Newel who is very sick again having taken a relapse. I returned with Bro. Johnson to his house and Bros. Palmer and Marks remained at Newels. Very warm today. Tuesday July 3d. Still warm. At 11.30 A.M. [Page 30, fd 3, item 35] Pres. Palmer took the train and started for Utah, then Bro. Marks and I went to Bro. Newels and remained all night, helping milk the cows and other chores in the evening. This afternoon was agreeably surprised by receiving another letter from home. Wednesday July 4 A very warm, sultry day. Went to Johnsonville early in the morning and wrote some letters then returned to Newels to help in the harvest field but the machine broke so had to wait until fixed. Could not help thinking of the difference of today from what it was a year ago when I was with my friends at Mathoni W. Pratts eating ice cream, etc. [Page 31, fd 3, item 36] Sunday, July 8th From the 4th until yesterday afternoon has been very hot and sultry. Bro. Marks and I have been helping Bro. Newel with his harvest, but the machine not working very well, did not make much progress. Saturday afternoon it rained very hard and turned cold in the evening. Bro. Marks and I went to Johnsonville through the rain and stoped all night with Bro. J. R. Johnson. There we met Elders Enos

S. Stookey & J. S. Anderson and Bros. Bost and family. This morning it is more pleasant being almost clear. Attended Sunday school then wrote a letter. In the afternoon attended meeting and had the priv [Page 32, fd 3, item 37] ilege of speaking a few minutes. After meeting went down to Bro. Wm. Newels. Monday July [9th] A clear and pleasant day and I helped Bro. Newel with gathering his wheat. Tuesday July 10 Quite pleasant but some clouds. Am still working in the harvest field. Recd two letters from home. Wednesday July 11 Quite pleasant but a little rain. After breakfast wrote a letter then went to Johnsonville and wrote another. Waited for the mail then went to Mr. J. Cronkhites to dinner with Bros. Marks, Johnson and Bost. After dinner we enjoyed ourselves in a game of ball. Remained all night at Cronkhites. [Page 33, fd 3, item 38] Thursday July 12 Pleasant but cloudy, a little rain. This forenoon we elders took a bath in the creek then went to Johnsonville. Here we found Elder Squires who had come in to recruit, not being well. Had dinner at J.R. Johns then in the afternoon went to Bro. Newels had supper and remained all night. Friday July 13 Pleasant day. This forenoon Bro. Marks and I went across the river by way of Covington to Liver Shelbys. (12 miles) and it was very warm walking. Here we found Elder Nebeker and Jensen the latter being quite sick with the chills. We remained all night. Saturday, July 14 [Page 34, fd 3, item 39] There was quite a severe thunder storm last night but it is pleasant this morning. After breakfast went down to the river to fish and saw the first cat fish I ever saw. Took dinner at Bro. Chas Coles, then Bro. Grahams and had supper with them then returned to Chas. Coles. Shortly after arriving at Coles a gentleman came for us to go to Shelbys as Bro Jenson was worse, so we went to Shelbys and remained all night. Sunday July 15th A beautiful clear day. This forenoon went to meeting at Grahams and was called upon to speak. Dinner with Bro. Graham then went to meeting it being held at *Page 35, fd 3, item 40+ Bro Chas Coles this afternoon. Spoke a few minutes again. On the evening we all went to Shelbys to supper, had ice cream, sang some and enjoyed ourselves. Bros. Marks, Stookey and I then went to Bro. Grahams to stop all night, and they being in bed we serenaded them, they welcomed us in the house.

Monday July 18th This morning we went down to the Wabash river which is only a short distance from Grahams house and elder Stookey and I bathed in the river. We shortly after went to Bro. C. Coles to dinner and Bro. Marks and I remained the afternoon and night. Wrote some letters. Towards evening there was a heavy rain. Tuesday July 19 Clear and pleasant today. After breakfast Bro. Marks and I left the saints to go out into our field of labor. We walked to Covington, 4 miles from Coles then took train at 8 A.M. for Indianapolis, which is 72 miles from Covington. Took dinner at a restaurant then walked on east 15 miles farther to the town of Palestine, where we got permission, after walking around about 1 miles to hold a meeting tonight in a school house. At the close of the meeting we were invited home with a Mr. S. T. Hook which we accepted thankfully, and had a very pleasant chat before returning. This afternoon while on the road we stoped a few minutes at [Page 37, fd 3, item 42] Mr. Levi Cornwell, who treated us kindly and invited us to stop all night if we should come that way again. Walked 20 mi. R.R. 72 miles. Wednesday July 18 We walked from Palestine about 5 miles southeast to Carrolton and while on our way a Mr. James F. Johnson invited us to his house to dinner which we accepted. We got permission to preach in a church near by, Easton Chapel, and held meeting at 8 P.M. Had supper with Mr. Taylor and after meeting I returned to Mr. Johnsons. Bro. Marks going to another house. 8 miles. Thursday July 19th I ate breakfast with Mr. Johnson then Bro. Marks came and we proceeded on our [Page 38, fd 3, item 43] journey. When we came to Rushville we stoped at a restaurant and got a lunch then proceeded on until we came to Mr. Thomas Young in Frnalin co. Ind. Bro. Marks & Squires had stoped here before and this is the County of our field of labor. Had supper and remained all night. 32 miles. Friday July 20th Pleasant weather. This morning we went to Andersonville where I recd four letters from home with my patriarchal blessing which was sent me. Called upon Mr. Lafayette Cox, had dinner with him, then called upon Mr. Adams, had supper with Mr. Davis, and stoped all night with Mr. Warren Allison. 6 miles. Saturday July 21st After breakfast with Mr. Allison Bro. Marks and I walked to Laurel and back finding many blackberries on the road which we helped ourselves to. Had dinner at Mr. Allison and towards evening went to Mr. Stephens to supper and remained all night. 5 miles. Sunday July 22. Clear and pleasant. Breakfast then read some. Called to Mr. Davis had dinner, then went to the Stephens school house, having engaged it previously, swept it out and held a meeting, I speaking first.

After meeting went home with Wm. Martin had supper and remained all night. During the evening we called upon Mr. Field [Page 40, fd 3, item 45] Gilmore and family. Monday July 23 Very warm day. After breakfast read some from the bible then took a nap. Bro. Marks not feeling well on account of his wifes sickness, it cast a gloom upon the feelings of us both. After dinner we left Martins and called upon Mr. Adams having a friendly chat for an hour or two then Mrs. Adams gave us a lunch which we partook of freely. We then called on Mr. Locke and remained all night. Tuesday July 24th Pioneer day of Utah but how different are the circumstances which surround me from what was a year ago. Had a heavy shower of rain last night. After [Page 41, fd 3, item 46] breakfast we went to Andersonville, then to Thomas Young where we got dinner and I wrote some letters. We then went back to Andersonville to post our letters, stopping on the way to read some reading in the paper of the robbing of Zions Savings Bank of Salt Lake City. Went from Andersonville to Mr. Adams and got caught in a rain. Had supper and remained all night. 10 miles. Wednesday July 25 Clear and pleasant this morning. Had a pleasant conversation after breakfast with Mrs. Adams on [?]ology. We called on Messers Gilmore and Thorne about noon , eating dinner with the farmer. We then went into the woods and read some and shaved our-[Page 42, fd 3, item 47] selves, but the razor being dull made it a disagreeable task. Afterwards called upon Mr. Wm. Martin, and by his request we went to Gilmores in the evening to get him some butter and while there ate supper with Mrs. Thorne. Stopped all night with Martin. 2 mi. Thursday July 26 Pleasant day, have been keeping bachelors hall with Mr. Martin. In the morning took a nap then read most of the day. In the evening picked about five quarts of blackberries for Martin then we sang some before retiring. Friday July 27 After breakfast Bro. marks and I picked about eight quarters of blackberries, then went over to Mr. Allisons, had *Page 43, fd 3, item 48] dinner, spent most of the afternoon then returned to Mr. Martins. Wrote a letter to my friend, Tom Wilson, before supper. Sang some in the evening before retiring. 2 miles. Saturday July 28 After breakfast I went to Andersonville to post my letter but did not receive any mail, was therefore disappointed. On returning had dinner with Mr. Martin and in the evening we went to Mr. Thornes and remained all night. 8 miles. Sunday July 29th

Pleasant this morning. After breakfast we read some and about noon went to Mr. Allisons to dinner and remained until meeting time, 3 P.M. when we went to the Stephens school house and held a [Page 44, fd 3, item 49] meeting, I speaking upon the first principles of the gospel, and Bro. Marks speaking upon the divinity of the Book of Mormon. After meeting we returned to Mr. Allisons and remained all night. Monday July 30. After breakfast we went to Mr. martins and helped him pick some berries then ate dinner with him. In the afternoon I wrote a letter to father then Bro. Marks and I went to Andersonville for the mail I receiving five letters. Bro. M received word from his wife that she was very sick which made him feel very sad and cast a glom over us. We returned to Mr. Martins , had supper and retired for the night. 8 miles. Tuesday, July 31. [Page 45, fd 3, item 50] quite cool last night and clear this morning. We went to Gilmores to dinner, wrote some letters and helped Mrs. Thorne pick some blackberries. Had supper with Gilmores and remained all night. Wednesday Aug 1st Clear and cool this morning but clouded up during the day and rained this evening. Breakfast with Gilmores then we called on Mr. Davis and I went to Mr. Allisons to to get my views of Salt Lake city which I gave to Mrs. Gilmore. Had dinner at Thornes and supper at Gilmores but remained all night with Mr. Thorne. 2 miles. Thursday Aug 2d. Clear in the morning but rained during the day. [Page 46, fd 3, item 51] This morning we went to Mr. Davis, had dinner and supper with him and helped him make a well [?]. In the evening we went to Mr. Martins and remained all night. Friday Aug 3 After breakfast picked some blackberries for Wm. Martins had dinner with him, then called on Mr. Sewis to see a Mr. Barber who knew, he said, some Mormons living near New Trinton this county. In the evening we called at Mr. Allison, had supper, then went to Davis and stoped all night. 2 miles. Saturday Aug 4th This morning visited Mr. Allisons and helped them pick some berries and ate dinner with them. In the afternoon called on Thornes, *Page 47, fd 3, item 52+ Gilmores and Adams folks. Helped Mrs. Thorne wind some yarn, ate supper with Mrs. Davis and remained all night with Mr. Martin. 2 miles. Sunday Aug 5th Pleasant day. Passed the day visiting with Mr. Martin, Davis, Allison, Gilmore and Thorne, remaining all night with the latter.

Monday, Aug 6th. Another pleasant day. After breakfast with David Thorne we visited Wm. Martin then called on field Gilmore for dinner. After dinner we had some sport pitching horse shoes then went to Andersonville for our mail, I receiving a paper and two letters. We then called on Thomas Young and remained all night. [Page 48, fd 3, item 53] Had no supper. 5 miles. Tuesday Aug 7 After breakfast came back to Wm. Martins and had dinner with him. In the afternoon called on Messrs. Thorne and Gilmore and in the evening we went to Warren Allisons had supper and remained all night. 5 miles. Wednesday Aug 8 Left Mr. Allisons this morning about 8 oclock going to Laurel to post our letters. We then continued our journey southeast passing through met a man about noon and arriving at Brookville about 5 P.M. where we stoped at an hotel during the night. We had no dinner only some blackberries and saw corn we picked on the road, being to bashful to ask for something to eat. Got some sweet cakes [Page 49, fd 3, item 54] and a glass of cider in Brookville for our supper. 17 miles.

Thursday Aug 9th We left Brookville about 8 A.M. continuing our journey southward passing through Cedar Grove about one oclock. Here we made an appointment to preach next Sunday evening also made an appointment near Brookville for Sunday evening. We arrived at New Trenton about 4. P.M. where we got permission to preach in a Methodist Church tomorrow evening. We then went to a Mr. Chappalow [?] who once belonged to the Church but is now a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, and got permission to remain all night, also ate supper with them. Made [Page 50, fd 3, item 55] our dinner on blackberries along the road. Rained several times during the day and quite hard this evening. 13 m. Friday Aug 10th Rained nearly all the forenoon. After breakfast Bro. Marks talked with the old lady, Mrs. Chappalow and her son upon different principles of the gospel, but mostly Celestial marriage but could not agree upon the latter subject very well. We had a pleasant time, however, and when we left after dinner they invited us to call again. Went to New Trenton and held a meeting according to appointment after which a Mr. Rockafellow took us to a tavern and gave us lodging. No supper. 2 miles. [Page 51, fd 3, item 56] Saturday Aug 11. Left New Trenton this morning at 6 oclock with out breakfast and when out of town a short distance we picked an ear of corn each and ate it. When about 3 miles from town we stoped at a house and the lady gave us some breakfast. On arriving at Cedar Grove we stoped at a tavern to rest ourselves until twelve oclock when we asked at three different places for something to eat but were refused, we

then went about 2 miles east to a Mrs. Heaps who gave us some dinner after which we saw the director of a school house nearby and got permission to preach tomorrow. On returning to Mrs. Heaps we had supper and were surprised to [Page 52, fd 3, item 57] learn that she was a member of the Church, having been baptized about twenty years ago. She is now 73 years of age and a widow but her youngest son is living with her. There are quite a number of families in this neighborhood who have relatives living in Utah. 12 mi. Sunday Aug 12 After breakfast we notified the people in the district of the meeting then held two services, one in the morning and one in the afternoon in the school house. Sister Heap and her son both attending. After supper Geo. Heap took us all down to Cedar Grove with his team where we held another meeting in a church after which we returned to [Page 53, fd 3, item 58] Sister Heaps having spent the day very pleasantly. Walked 6 mi. rode 3 miles. Monday Aug 13 After breakfast we had a sociable talk with Sr. Heap and her grand-daughter sang some and I did the churning for the folks; rained some this forenoon. Had dinner then about 3 oclock bade the folks goodbye and walked to within 3 miles of Brookville where we held a meeting in a school house. After meeting Mr. Francis Dayton (Catholic) invited us home with him which we accepted thankfully. Our audience numbered about 150. 4 miles. Tuesday Aug 14th After breakfast with Mr. Dayton by request of his daughter we wrote our autographs [Page 54, fd 3, item 59] in her album, then started on our journey to Laurel. Stoped in Brookville while Bro. Marks had his boots mended then went to the editor of the paper there and asked if he would publish the articles of our faith but he refused. We then proceeded on our journey and a Metamora Bro Marks bought 10 [cents] worth of cakes for our dinner then walked on arriving at Laurel about 4.30 P.M. where we received letters from home. Mr. Johnson took us in his sulky from laurel to Wm. Martins (3 mi) but he not being home we went to David Thornes to supper and stoped all night with Field Gilmore. *?+ to Trenton and back 78 miles riding 6 mi. 17 miles walk, ride 3 mi. [Page 55, fd 3, item 60] Wednesday Aug 15 Rained last night and cloudy most of today. I went to Warren Allisons this morning to change my clothes then returned in the evening went again and got some mail for Bro Marks and myself. We visited most of the day with Gilmore and Thorne but in the evening went to Wm. Martins and stoped all night. Wrote some letters during the day. 2 miles. Thursday Aug 16 Clear and pleasant. Stoped all day at Mr. Martins with the expectation of going to Mr. Allison in the afternoon. Called at Henry Davis and met a Mr. Borne with whom I had a little discussion upon the

principles of the Gospel but he being in a hurry *Page 56, fd 3, item 61+ didnt have time to say much. Wrote a letter to father and Edwin each. 1 mi. Friday Aug 17 Clear and pleasant today. Helped Mr. Martin pick some berries this morning and spent the rest of the day reading and napping. Saturday Aug 18 Pleasant day. About 9:30 A.M. went to Mr. Field Gilmores and [?] then spent the rest of the day with Gilmore and Thorne reading and talking. Stoped all night with Gilmore. This evening received a letter from Srah and the pictures of the Authorities of the Church. Sunday Aug 19th Very hot sultry day. After breakfast at Gilmores we went to the Stephens *Page 57, fd 3, item 62] School-house to hear a Mr. J. Anderson preach, returning to Gilmores to dinner. Mr. Anderson came to dinner also, and in trying to refute Mormonism used only sarcasm and slander without any scripture whatever. Our dinner was not enjoyed as much as might have been because of his conversation. At 3. P.M. Bro Marks and I held a meeting in the same school house and after meeting we had more invitations to go home with the people than before, friends coming forward on every hand. We went to Warren Allisons to supper and remained all night. It was a beautiful, moonlight evening and friend, wm. Martin was with us and we sang [Page 58, fd 3, item 63] songs and enjoyed ourselves. Monday Aug 20 Warm and cloudy, some little rain. After breakfast we called on Thornes and Gilmores but not finding them home we called to Mr. Martins then went to Mr. Crookerys to dinner as per previous appointment. After dinner went to Laurel to get mal but recd none, then returned to Davis, Thornes, Gilmores, Martins, and Allisons to say good-bye as we had to leave Laurel on the 8.24 P.M. train for Connersville, for Bro Marks had recd a letter from Sr. Frank Shelby that her baby was very sick and wished him to come as soon as possible. Arrived at Connersville about 9. P.M. [Page 59, fd 3, item 64] stopping all night. Walked 10 mi and R.R. 12 mi. Tuesday Aug 21st Stoped at an hotel last night and ate a lunch at the depot this morning while waiting for the train. Left Connersville at 8. A.M., arrived at Indianapolis about 11. A.M. took dinner at a restaurant and left for Covington at 1.30 P.M. arriving at 4.30 P.M. then walked to Oliver Shelbys where I found two letters awaiting me. R.R. 130 mi Walked 2 m. Wednesday Aug 22d After breakfast went to Bro. Chas. Coles had dinner with them then went to Bro. Robt. Grahams where we were treated to water melons, had supper then returned to Mr. Shelbys. Had some ice cream this evening. 4 mi.

In the evening we all went to Covington to a nights camp meeting which was a strange thing to me, the speaker only telling of his experience as a slave then as a freeman. Friday Aug 24th After breakfast at Shelbys Bro. Marks and I took train fro Johnsonville, arriving there about noon. Had dinner with J.R. Johnson, then we went to Sister Cronkhites where we remained all night. R.R. 26 mi., walked 3 miles. Saturday Aug 25th After breakfast read some then picked some plums for Sr. Cronkhite. After dinner we returned to Bro. *Page 61, fd 3, item 66+ J. R. Johnsons. Bro Marks and Durfee then went to Shelbys to hold a meeting tomorrow Sunday, and Bro. Elias Nebeker came about noon from Shelbys that he and I should remain here to hold meeting tomorrow. I took Elders Marks & Durfee as far as Bro. Wm. Newels in Shelbys buggy then returned and helped Sr. Johnson with drying corn. 5 miles. Sunday Aug 26th Clear and pleasant today. Elder Nebeker and I held two meetings in Johnsonville today, one at 11 A.M. and one at 3 P.M. Ate breakfast and dinner at J.R. Johnsons and after meeting in the afternoon drove over to Oliver Shelbys where we had supper and remained all night. Recd a letter from mother. Rode 12 miles. [Page 62, fd 3, item 67] Monday Aug 27 After breakfast spent the forenoon in reading, talking and wrote a letter to Bert. Took dinner with Shelbys then went to Chas. Coles when in the afternoon Bro Marks rebaptized Sister Cole the old lady, and we reconfirmed her, I being mouth. This is the first time I ever performed this duty. We took supper with Bro. Cole then returned to O. Shelbys. 3 mi. Tuesday, Aug 28. After breakfast we left Shelbys for Franklin Co. Ind., going to Covington in Shelbys buggy with Bro. Benton Cole, then took train for Indianapolis, from there took train for Rushville, arriving at 12.30 P.M. We then walked to Mr. Wm. Martins arriving at 6 P.M., where we stopped a few minutes, then went to *Page 63, fd 3, item 68+ Mr. Warren Allisons, had supper and remained all night. 126 miles. R.R. 112 mi., Carriage 2 mi. Walked 12 mi. Wednesday, Aug 29. Pleasant day. After breakfast we called at Henry Davis and remained to take dinner, after which we went to F. Gilmores and D. Thornes eating supper with Gilmore and stopping all night with Thorne. This afternoon recd letters from home and wrote two. 1 mi.

Thursday Aug 30. Very cool last night but pleasant today. Had breakfast with Thornes, read and talked till dinner then ate with Gilmores. Received a letter from Albert this morning with a picture of Moses Thatcher and five dollars. Went to Mrs. Wm. Stephens this afternoon and talked awhile, took supper, then went to Wm. Martins, but he was not at home *Page 64, fd 3, item 69+ yet we stopped all night. Friday, Aug. 31. Wrote a letter to Albert then we called on H. Davis and Warren Allison, then went to David Thornes to dinner. After dinner Elder Marks baptized David Thorne and his wife Abby in Garrison Creek; an old lady who is a neighbor and Fielding Gilmore, Bro. Thornes son in law, going with us to witness the act. After returning to Mr. Gilmores we held a meeting in his house, elder Marks giving instructions to Bro. and Sr. Thorne, and I also spoke a few words, after which we confirmed them, Elder Marks confirming Bro. Thorne and I Sr. Thorne. We took supper with them and I then helped Mrs. Gilmore to churn. In the evening Wm. Martin called and we went home with him and re- [Page 65, fd 3, item 70] mained all night. 3 miles. Saturday, Sept. 1st We had breakfast at 5 oclock then walked to Laurel and took train for Cedar-grove where we arrived a few minutes before 8 oclock. We then walked to Sr. Heaps finding her feeling unwell, having been quite sick since our last visit. In the afternoon after dinner we went to see John Carter, director of a school house about a mile east of Sr. Heaps, but could not find him at home, so returned without getting the house to hold meeting. We had supper and retired to bed. R.R. 20 mi, walked 8 . Sunday, Sept 2d. Didnt get up till late this morning. Not having any appointments to preach we spent the day reading and talking at Sr. Heaps, enjoying *Page 66, fd 3, item 71+ ourselves. The day has been quite warm and cloudy this afternoon, raining some this evening. Monday, Sept 3. After breakfast we rode to Cedar Grove with Geo. Heap to see if we could obtain permission to preach in the Church. Called to see Mr. Case but he not being home were referred to Mr. Pettey, who lived about one mile from town, to whom we then applied but he couldnt, or wouldnt, give his consent without the approval of Case. Said he would meet us in town at 5 oclock in the afternoon and let us know, so we returned to Sr. Heaps and had dinner. In the afternoon went to Cedar Grove again but failed to see either Case or Pettey. Returned to Sr. Heaps and Elder marks talked to Geo. Heap and an[Page 67, fd. 3, item 72] other young man upon the principles of the Gospel until bedtime. Walked 6 mi. rode 12 mi. Tuesday, Sept 4 Pleasant day. We spent the forenoon in reading and chatting with the folks. After dinner went to Cedar Grove to make another effort to obtain the church but failed again, also in getting the school

house. Returned to Sr. Heaps had supper and then Elder Marks preached Mormonism to her and her niece. 5 miles. Wednesday Sept 5 Pleasant day. Between breakfast and dinner wrote two letters and read some. In the afternoon called to see the trustee of Possum-hollow school house, but failing to see him left word with a neighbor to ask if we could have meeting in *Page 68, fd 3, item 73+ the evening, then returned to Sr. Heaps and helped Geo. Her son, to dig potatoes. In the evening went to the school house and found it opened for us. We held meeting, Elder Marks speaking on baptism for the dead. I adding a few words at the close. Got permission to preach again tomorrow night. Thursday, Sept 6 Pleasant day. After breakfast Elder Marks and I gathered some onions then helped Geo. Unload his potatoes. Read most of the time during the afternoon. This evening held another meeting in Possum-Hollow school house., the subject of remarks being the gathering. 3 mi. Friday Sept 7th Spent the forenoon talking and reading. After dinner we bade good bye to Sr. Heap, her son [Page 69, fd 3, item 74] and grand-daughter, and started fro Laurel. We stopped at Brookville and ate some cakes, then went on going to Warren Allisons where we arrived at about 8.20 P.M. walking all the way. Pleasant day, but cloudy this evening. 24 miles. Saturday Sept 8. Cloudy, cold and stormy this morning but cleared off some towards afternoon. Remained at Allisons until after dinner sitting around the fire to keep warm. In the afternoon went to Bro. Thornes and F. Gilmores had supper with them and remained all night at Gilmores. Sunday, Sept 9. Very cool and clear last night, some frost. Took breakfast with Gilmore and dinner with Thornes. This morning we called at Mr. Allisons and Davis to let them know we *Page 70, fd 3, item 75] would have meeting at 3 P.M. at Bro. Thornes. We had a good meeting out of doors, although it was cold. Elder Marks speaking upon the Gathering, and I made a few remarks also. After meeting went home with Wm. Martin, had supper and remained all night. 3 miles. Monday Sept 10 Took breakfast with Wm. Martin, which was very good, consisting of fried chicken, sweet potatoes, etc.; then went to Gilmores and Bro. Thornes, spent the day visiting. Dinner and supper at Gilmores, then in the evening called on Warren Allison and remained all night. 2 miles. Tuesday Sept 11. We were intending to start for Covington this morning, but at the breakfast table heard that Miss Anna Adams, a Young [Page 71, fd 3, item 76] lady who is a believer in the Gospel but her parents

are opposed to her being baptized, had left home unknown to her parents; we therefore concluded to remain here at Mr. Allisons until she is found. We heard this afternoon that Miss Adams had been found at Cedar Grove. This evening Mr. Martin called feeling very low spirited. Wednesday, Sept. 12. Remained at Warren Allisons nearly all day, but in the afternoon called to see Bro. and Sister Thorne and Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore. The latter couple were feeing quite low spirited, having been accused of having something to do with Miss Adams leaving home, that is, of encouraging and assisting her to do so. We talked with them and they felt a little better [Page 72, fd 3, item 77] when we left to return to Mr. Allisons. On our re the road as we were returning we met Mary J. Stephens, who in talking of Mrs. A. blamed her of being saucy and disobedient to her mother, saying her mother was quite unwell because of what had happened. Thursday Sept 13 This day has been a very eventful one to me, a like incident I having never experienced before. About midnight or soon after last night we were awakened by the cries of a mob comprised of about 150 men. We immediately got up and dressed ourselves while Mr. Allison went out and talked to them, but they demanded we (Elder Marks & I) should come out, but Allison got them to promise they would do us no [Page 73, fd 3, item 78] serious injury and then told us we had better go with them. Accordingly we walked out among the mob amid their shouts and jeers, the night being clear and cool, and the moon shining brightly near the zenith. Mr. Locke the leader of the gang, came rushing forward like mad man accusing Elder Marks of ruining the character of Miss Adams, but by Bro. Marks talking to him he became more quiet in a few minutes. We were ordered to march, which we did, surrounded by the mob, until we came to the road about 40 rods from Allisons house. Here they halted and ordered us to divest ourselves of our clothing preparatory to receiving a coat of tar and feathers. We obeying the order, a Mr. Ed. Stephens then applied the tar with a [Page 74, fd. 3, item 79] large brush, and another person unknown to us applied the feathers. After this was done we were told by Mr. Locke they wouldnt give us till morning to learn and never return, and a Mr. Mc Cullum told us to leave the county and state and suggested a committee be appointed to see that the order was obeyed, but Mr. Locke said there was no need of one. The mob began to disperse and we returned to Warren Allisons, washed our faces and hands, then bade them good-bye and started for Connersville, W. Allisons brother going a short distance with us to direct us on the road. It was 30 minutes to one A.M. when we got back to Allisons and one oclock when we left. We arrived at Connersville at 4. A.M. boarded a freight train for [Page 75, fd 3, item 80] Indianapolis arriving there at 8.30 A.M. Left Indianapolis at 1.30 P.M. going by train to Covington, then walked from there to O. Shelbys. On our arrival we were sorry to learn that Sister Fran Shelbys baby had died in the forenoon at 11 oclock. The folks seeing our condition soon made preparation for us to clean ourselves and change our clothes. Bro. Benton Cole, John Shelby and Elders Jenson then assisted us in getting the tar and feathers off. Our clothes were all spoiled, being saturated with tar. After getting some clean clothes on, we had supper and felt quite like ourselves again, except a little sore in parts. R.R. 130 mi, Walked 15 mi. Friday Sept 14th

After breakfast we got ready to attend the funeral of [Page 76, fd 3, item 81] Sister John Shelbys baby which was held in Shelbys house the services being conducted by Elder Marks. After singing I was called upon to make the opening prayer, then Bro. Marks addressed the congregation, followed by Elder Jenson. We then sang another hymn and Elder Marks pronounced benediction. Took dinner at Shelbys. Then Elder Elias Nebeker and I started for Johnsonville, riding across the river with John Shelby. On coming to Mr. Chronkhite, I being tired, concluded to remain all night. Bro. Nebeker going on to Johnsonville. At Chronkites I met Elders Saphish and McConnel for the first time. Took supper at Chronkite. 6 miles. Saturday, Sept 15th Had breakfast at Mr. Cronkhites then went to Johnsonville and met *Page 77, fd 3, item 82+ Pres. Palmer, Elders Stookey, Anderson, Coons, Farnsworth, Butler, Durfee, Miner, and Barnes, the last two having just come from Utah. At 10 oclock A.M. conference commenced and I was called upon to dismiss meeting at the close of the forenoon service. Took dinner with Bro. G. W. Johnson. At 2 P.M. conference convened again and several Elders were called upon to speak I being one of the number. We had another meeting in the evening after which I in company with Elders Stookey, Miner and Barnes went to Cronkhites to remain all night. Had supper at J.R. Johnsons. 4 miles, rode 3 miles. Sunday, Sept 16th. After breakfast went to Johnsonville to meeting. Attended two counsel meetings today, one in the morning and one in the [Page 78, fd 3, item 83] evening; and three meetings of conference, one at 10 A.M., one at 2 P.M. and one 7.30 P.M. Had dinner and supper at J.R. Johnsons. This afternoon Bro. Butler was taken with a chill and felt very unwell, but by the administration of the Elders he got much better. Elders Jenson, Sapish, McConnell and I went to Bro. Newels stopped all night. 3 miles. Monday Sept 17th. After breakfast with Bro Newel went to Johnsonville, attended counsel meeting of the Elders in the morning at which more reports were given and Pres. Palmer gave some good instructions. The meeting was adjourned until afternoon when the Elders were paired off as follows; Elders Joseph Sapish and John W. Coons, Elias Nebeker and H. H. McConnell, S.R. Mrks and M. Miner, Ephraim Jenson and E. [Page 79, fd 3, item 84] F. Durfee, S.S. Stookey and Thomas Butler, R.R. Farnswork and James A. Anderson, J. G. Barnes and myself. In the evening there was another conference meeting at which Bros Marks, Stookey and Palmer addressed the congregation. In the evening Elders Jenson, Durfee, and I went to Cronkhites and remained all night. After retiring Elder Jenson and I conversed together for some time exchanging ideas, which was quite interesting and instructive to me. Ate dinner and supper at Bro. J.R. Johnsons Tuesday, Sept 18th. Breakfast at Cronkhites then went to Johnsonville and took the 11.30 A.M. train for Danville, Ill. in company with several of the Elders. Bought a suit of clothes, shirt and necktie. We returned to Johnsonville in the afternoon, ate supper with Bro. G.W. Johnson and [Page 80, fd 3, item 86] remained all night. In the evening Elder Marks and I went down to the creek and washed our feet as a testimony

against those who tarred and feathered us, according to the commandment of our Savior. 20 mi, walked 3. Wednesday, Sept 19th. Breakfast with Geo. W. Johnson, Spent the forenoon around Johnsonville, took dinner at J.R. Johnsons. In the afternoon went to the creek in company with Bro. Barnes took a batch and changed clothes. We then went to Bro. Wm. Newels had supper and remained all night. Thursday, Sept 20th. Took breakfast with Wm. Newel, then went to Johnsonville and spent the day reading and talking with the elders. Dinner at J.R. Johnsons and supper at Wm. Newels. Remained all night with te latter in company with Bros. [Page 81, fd 3, item 87] Barnes, Miner, and Durfee. 3 miles. Friday, Sept. 21st After breakfast went to J.R. Johnsons in company with Bro. Miner and remained all day. Bro. Farnswork and I sawed some wood this afternoon, trying to make ourselves useful. This evening Bro. Stookey played the violin and some were trying to dance. Dinner and supper at J. R. Johnsons. Went to Geo. W. Johnsons in company with Bro. Stookey and stoped all night. 2 miles. Saturday, Sept 22. Breakfast at Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons then went to Wm. Newels to see Bro. Marks and bade the folks good bye. Came back to Johnsons bade them god bye, then Elder Farsnworth and I started for Oliver Shelbys stopping at W. Johnsons and Mr. Cronkhites on the road. Waded the Wabash River then went to Bro. Grahams to din-[Page 82, fd 3, item 88] ner. After dinner came to Shelbys and found letters from home. In the evening there was a meeting and Bro. Palmer occupied all the time. I was called upon to dismiss the meeting and responded. 8 miles walk. Sunday, Sep 23d. Somewhat raining today. After breakfast wrote some letters then had dinner. This afternoon we held a meeting in Mr. Shelbys front room and partook of the sacrament. There were present of the Elders, Bros. Jenson, Nebeker, McConnel, Anderson and myself, and we each made a few remarks. I also dismissed the meeting. Monday Sept 24th. After breakfast I, in company with Bro. J. Barnesmy partnerand Elders Farnsworth and Anderson left Shelbys and started for our fields of labor walking to Covington (2 miles) where we took train for Indianapolis [Page 83, fd 3, item 89] but Elders Farnsworth and Anderson stoped off at Crawfordsville. WeElder Barnes and Ihad dinner in Indianapolis, then walked about twelve miles south of east where we got a place to stop all night, after being refused three times, with a Mr. James Burns. Had supper with them then talked till nearly 10 oclock upon the principles of the Gospel. 86 miles, 14 mi. walk.

Tuesday, Sept 25th Had breakfast with James Burns, after which I talked with him a short time then read until nearly 11 oclock A.M. when we left Mr. Burns (being invited to call again) and walked to Palestine and called upon Mr. S.T. Hook and had dinner. On learning were invited to call again. Failing to get a house to preach in in Palestine we left that town and went to Mr. James Johnsons which when Elder Marks and I had stoped before. We had supper and remained all night [Page 84, fd 3, item 90] 7 miles today; rode in a wagon about 2 mi. Wednesday, Sept 26th Quite cold last night with heavy frost. After Breakfast we helped Mr. Johnson strip some game and after dinner we went to Carrollton, saw the school director and asked permission to hold meeting in the school house but were referred to the trustee of the township (which township is Brandywine, Hancock Co. Ind.) We then called on the trustee Mr. Coleman Popewho lives about 3 miles east of Carrolltonbut he refused the house, as he had others before, and did not want to show any partiality. With their permission we remained with Mr. Pepe and family all night. Had supper then I talked to Mr. Pope upon the principles of the Gospel, but he had not much to say. 5 miles. Thursday, Sept 27th. After breakfast with Mr. Pope had a talk with a Mr. Millian then went [Page 85, fd 3, item 91] to see the trustees of Mt. Lebanon Church and received permission to hold a meeting in said church tomorrow evening. We then started for Carrollton and met a Mr. Joseph Rogers who gave us dinner. After dinner went to Carrollton for mail but received none. Was refused 4 places to stop all night but got permission to stop with Mr. James Jonson, where we had supper. 11 miles today. Friday, Sept 28th. Breakfast with Mr. Johnson. After talking awhile with the folks we went towards the Church in which we will hold meeting this evening; stoped under the shade of a tree where we read and studied most of the day. Had no dinner, but while reading in the afternoon a Mr. S. D. Milburn came and invited us to supper which we thankfully accepted. After supper we walked to the Mt. Lebanon church where we held a meeting, the audience [numbering about 300 persons and good order prevailed through the services. At the close of the meeting we were invited by Mr. Milburn to stop all night with him, which invitation we accepted, riding home with him. Talked until after ten oclock. 7 mi Walk 5. Saturday, Sept 29 Breakfast with Mr. Milburn, then looked at his fine stock after which we went to the woods to read and study. Had dinner at a Mr. Cracroft then went to James Johnsons, shaved, got our satchels and started for James Burns, as we were unable to get a house in which to preach in Carrollton. Received a letter from Bro and Sister Thorne while in Carrollton, and we sent it to Bro. Marks. At Palestine called on Mr. Faut, a news paper correspondent, then came on to James Burns, had supper and stoped all night. 11 miles walk. Sunday, Sept 30th

Clear and pleasant this morning after [Page 87, fd 3, item 93] a ha[r]d thunder shower last night, but clouded up towards noon again. Spent the day in reading and talking to Mr. Burns and family, and remained all night again. Wrote two letters home. Monday, Oct 1st Breakfast with Mr. Burns after which witnessed him blow up a stump of a tree with dynamite, then we went to Palestine, posted our letters and then went south hunting for houses to hold meetings in. About three miles south of Palestine saw the director, Mr. Frank Querrie [sp], of one school house, go this permission to hold a meeting, ate dinner with him then went to the school house to give notice of a meeting but the teacher objected to our holding a meeting. We then went on two mile farter south and got permission of another director and also the teacher and gave notice in the school of a meeting tonight. In the evening held a meeting, the audience numbering 20 persons, and I spoke upon [Page 88, fd 3, item 94] the first principles of the gospel. After meeting were invited home by John Webber. Gave notice of another meeting for tomorrow night. 9 miles. Tuesday, Oct 2d. Hard thunder shower last night and raining this morning. Remained at John Webbers till about three oclock this afternoon, having breakfast and dinner with him, we then went to the school house again and held another meeting, about 50 persons being present. After meeting no one inviting us home with them, Bro. Barnes went to a house across the street and got permission for us to stop all night with Reuben Fritts. No supper. We are now in Shelby Co. Ind. Wednesday Oct 3d. Clear weather this morning. After breakfast with Mr. R. Tritts we walked about 6 miles southeast to Mr. Wm Horrel, trustee of Moral Township, Shelby Co. and asked him for permission to hold meetings in the school houses. He said he had no [Page 89, fd 3, item 95] objections provided the teachers and directors of each were willing, but would issue no order to that effect. Invited us to dinner which we accepted, then travelled west to the town of London where we got permission of the director, Mr. Perry, to hold a meeting tonight. Held meeting, there being about 75 persons present, and were invited home by Mr. W. S. Mason. 12 miles. Thursday, Oct 4th Breakfast with W. S. Mason after which talked with the folks and read some until noon when we had dinner. Remained a[t] Masons after dinner until the school was nearly out then went to the school house and remained until time for meeting, but it being very stormy there were only about six persons present yet we had meeting. No one inviting us home we went to seek for lodging and received it at the second place of inquiry at Mr. B. Cayton. No supper. Friday Oct 5th Very rainy and disagreeable this [Page 90, fd 3, item 96] morning. After breakfast with Mr. Cayton, we walked to Brookfield, 1 mi, saw Mr. Stanley director of the school house and got permission to hold meeting tonight. Dinner with Mr. Stanley. In the evening held meeting there being

only about 25 persons present it being so dark and stormy. At the close of meeting we were invited home with Mr. Stanley. 1 miles. Saturday Oct 6th. Raining yet this morning. Breakfast with Mr. Stanley. After breakfast walked to Pleasant View, 1 miles, tried to get a house to preach in but failed, so we then went on to Carrollton, got 7 letters, 1 postal card and one paper, then went to James Johnsons to see if we could stop all night but found his wife sick so could not stop. We then went to seek some other place to loge, enquiring of twelve different places on the [Page 91, fd 3, item 97] road to Palestine when we asked of one Mr. Faut, of Palestine, who not being able to keep us, having visitors, went and got us a place at Mr. Fred Rupkey. Had some apples for dinner at Mrs Fritts but no supper tonight. It being so wet, the roads were very muddy. 21 miles. Held five meetings this week in Moral Township, Shelby Co. Ind. Sunday, 8th Oct. Pleasant day with sun shining. Breakfast with Mr. Rupkey after which wrote some letters home then had dinner at Rupkeys. After dinner talked with the folk upon the principles of the gospel a short time then we left and went to James Burns finding his wife sick in bed. Met with a gentleman there with whom I talked for some time. Had supper at Burns and stoped all night. 2 miles. [Page 92, fd 3, item 98] Monday, 8th Oct. I am feeling better this morning than for a day or two past, not having felt right well lately. Pleasant day. Breakfast at Wm. Burns then helped him milk the cows. After breakfast went to Palestine, posted our letters and tried to get the school house to hold meeting but was refused. Went on to Carrollton to see if there was any mail but got none. Had quite a talk with a Mr. Johnson, father of James Johnson. We then went South to Moral Township, Shelby Co.; after asking four times were given two biscuits each for our dinner by a Mrs. Mc Cormick. We then tried to get the next school house but was refused by the director, but went on South to the next and was admitted. Held meeting, beginning at 7 oclock, there being about 50 persons present. After meeting was *Page 93, fd 3, item 99] invited home by Wm. J. Boon. No supper. 15 miles. Tuesday, 9th Oct. Breakfast with Wm. J. Boon, after which helped gather some hickory nuts and out some boon corn. Ate dinner at Mr. Boon then in the afternoon went to the school and waited till meeting time. Wrote a letter to Thos. R. Wilson this afternoon. Gave out notice of another meeting tomorrow night. After meeting had two invitations to homes of folks but accepted Jasper Jonas, going with him to his house. 4 miles, rode miles. Wednesday, 10th Oct. Breakfast at Jasper Jonas, after which he and family left home and we went into his barn to read, made dinner of apples, turnips, nuts, etc. In the afternoon went over to Mr. Boons with the old

gentleman Jonas and had a lunch of bread [Page 94, fd 3, item 100] and tomatoe butter. I then went and gathered some papas and ate. Went to the school house again by the time school was out and remained till meeting time held another meeting after which were invited home by Mr. George Yearling. 1 miles. The meetings were all well attended the house being full. [Pages 95 through 225 (end of book 3) are blank] [Rest taken from Volumes one and two] Thursday, 11th Oct. [Page 130, fd 2, item 135] Pleasant morning. Breakfast at Geo. Yearling after which went to precinct school house but was refused meetings, then went on to Pleasant View, ate dinner with Mr. H. B. Edwards a relative of Bp. Mc Rea. After saw [?] of the church and got per-[Page 131, fd 2, item 136] mission to hold a meeting to night. We then gave out the meeting and went to Brookfield to post some letters returning in time for meeting. There were present about 50 persons and at the close gave notice for another meeting tomorrow night. Was invited home by Mr. Frank [?]. 10 miles. Friday, Oct 12th After breakfast lay down on the lounge took a nap. After dinner went to Brookfield to get a house to hold meeting but failed also went to London but met with no success. We then returned to Pleasant View had supper at Mr. F. Man where we ate breakfast and dinner [Page 132, fd 2, item 137] then held another meeting in the church. Present at meeting about 30 persons. Was invited home after meeting by Mr. Samuel Mead. 7 miles. Saturday Oct. 13 After breakfast with Mr. Mead I talked awhile upon the principles of the gospel with him & a Mr. Dean who is boarding with him. On leaving we were invited to call again and Mr. Dean invited us to call on him if we ever came in his way and he would make us welcome although a bachelor. Went to John Weber took dinner with him remained the afternoon and helped chop some wood [Page 133, fd 2, item 138] then ate supper and remained all night. We have held 5 meetings during the week, there in Centre school house, Moral township and two in Pleasant View all Shelby Co. 4 miles. Sunday Oct 14th Breakfast with Mr. Weber. After breakfast sat around the fire and read and talked until dinner, then spent another hour or two talking and reading. When we left, having an invitation to call again, to see the director of Centre school house to hold meetings again. On the road met a Mr. Stapp who had attended some of our [Page 134, fd 2, item 139] meetings, who stoped us and talked a few minutes and invited us to stop with him. We then went to MR. Hofman, the director, but he not being home made known our business to one of his boys who said his father said we could not have the house. We then went to Mr. Stapps and stoped all night. Supper at Mr. Stapp. 4 miles.

Monday, Oct. 15th. After breakfast wrote some letters then went again to see Mr. Hoffman about getting the school house but was refused. Came back to Mr. Stapp had dinner then went North two miles to ask Mr. More about an old school {Page 135, fd 2, item 140] house belonging to him and got his consent to hold meetings. We then went and cleaned the house out, ite being dirty, put up some boards for seats and gave notice of a meeting in the school near by. While waiting for meeting to a Mr. Robt. Branson to sit by the fire it being cold and he invited us to have supper with them which we accepted. After meeting at which there were about 25 persons we were invited home by Geo. W. Martin. 5 miles. Tuesday, Oct. 16th. Breakfast with Mr. Martin after which we talked awhile then went to Palestine to get mail but I was disappointed. Called on MR. S. T. Hook, took dinner with him [Page 136, fd 2, item 141] and held a short time on his building, he being occupied in building a house. We then returned to Mr. Martins had supper and then went to meeting there being present about as many as last night. After meeting were invited home by Robt. Branson and we accepted. 8 miles. Wednesday, Oct. 7 Cloudy again this morning. Breakfast with Robt. Branson after which we spent the morning in reading and talking and singing some hymns. After dinner went to see the director of Sugar Creek Church, this township, Messrs. J. & J. T. Merman who gave [Page 137, fd 2, item 142] us permission to hold one meeting tomorrow, Thursday, night. We also went to Palestine to get mail but were disappointed again. Returned to Mr. Bransons had supper then went and held another meeting in Mr. Moores school house, there being six present. After meeting no one inviting us home, we went to Mr. Geo. Martins and Bro. Barnes asked for permission to stop all night which was granted. 10 miles. Thursday, Oct 18th. Rainy and muddy day. After breakfast with Mr. Martin we spent the forenoon reading and talking then had dinner about two oclock we left, went *Page 138, fd 2, item 143] west 2 mile to give out notice of the meeting tonight in the school, then came back 10 miles to the Sugar Creek church, made a fire and tried to dry ourselves while waiting for time of meeting. It being so stormy only 3 gentlemen came and we had no meeting as they had heard us before. By invitation we went home with one of them, James Paxton. No supper. 4 miles. Friday, Oct 19th. Still stormy and [?] this morning. Breakfast with James Paxton and also dinner. Read and talked to the folks till about ten oclock. Washed my stockings, dried and then darned them. About *Page 139, fd 2, item 144+ 2 oclock we left and went again to Sugar Creek church and waited for time of meeting no one came but two gentlemen, Mssrs Paxton & Rawlings so I read to them from Voice of Warning on divinity of Book of Mromon. Was invited home by Mr. Rawlings and we stoped with his father Samuel Rawlings. Still stormy. 2 miles. No supper. Saturday, Oct 20th.

Clear at sunrise but soon clouded up again and remained so all day. Breakfast and dinner at Samuel Rawlings. Spent the forenoon in talking upon the gospel and reading. Left Rawlings about 2 oclock went to see Mr. Herman again about getting Sugar Creek church for Monday night but *Page 140, fd 2, item 145] could get no definite answer. We then went to Mr. Jasper Jonas where we got supper and remained all night. 3 miles. Have held 3 meetings this week. Sunday, Oct 21st Cloudy today. Breakfast with J. Jonas after which we called upon Mr. boon a short time then went to Mr. Stapps and had dinner. After dinner we went to Canaan Church and heard Rev. Mc Sain speak and had the pleasure of shaking hands with him after meeting. Could agree with his preaching except in one thing and that was in regards to revelation he stating the canon of scriptures is [Page 141, fd 2, item 146+ full and there is to be no more revelation. After meeting we went to Mr. John Moores and had supper and would have remained all night but his wife objected but he would like to have had us stop. We then went to Mr. John M. Drake to see if we could stop all night but were refused, and then went to Mr. Geo. Yearlings where we stoped all night, having a good talk with him before retiring, upon the gospel. He seems to be much interested. 5 miles. Monday Oct 22 Breakfast with Geo. Yearling after which we helped him set out 16 fruit trees, after which we went to see about [Page 142, fd 2, item 147] getting Sugar Creek church but were refused admittance, then went on to Palestine where I received two letters and Bro. Barnes much more. We then went to Mr. James Barns and I helped him unload some hay then we had dinner with him, after which we helped him gather potatoes. After supper I talked with him till nearly eleven oclock when we retired for the night. 9 miles. Tuesday, Oct 23d Breakfast at Mr. Barnes after which I wrote some letters home took a bath and changed clothes. Had dinner then helped Mr. Burns with his potatoes again. [Page 143, fd 2, item 148] Left about 2 oclock and went to Palestine to post our letters then went to Geo. Yearling, got his cows from the pasture and milked them, then had supper and remained all night. Read and talked some before retiring. 8 miles. Wednesday, Oct 24th Breakfast with Geo. Yearling after which we milked the cows for him then started with towards Fairland going to the Polard school house where we obtained the teacher permission to hold meeting provided we got the trustees and direcdtors consent. We called at a Mr. James H. Field and got dinner then went to Fairland to see Mr. Wm. Goodwin, trustee of Brande [Page 144, fd 2, item 149] wine township, Shelby Co., In d. and got his consent to hold meetings and on the raod met the director John bishop, and got his consent also, then went to the school, gave out the meeting and remained until time for to commence. At the close of the meeting there being objections offered we did not give out any more appointments here. No one inviting us home we remained in the shcoo hose all night, but just at

the close of the meeting some roughs were talking of mobbing so we went along from the house until they left then returned. 9 miles. Thursday Oct 25 It rained nearly all night [Page 145, fd 2, item 150] and quite muddy this morning. Left the school house about six oclock and went westward inquiring on the road for something to eat. At the 6th place got two small biscuits each then went on inquiring two more places, having come about two miles, when at a Mr. J.S. Fallin we were made welcome and learned that one of our Elders had stoped there. Mr. Walter Spencer name. After having something to eat we went to a school house near by saw the teacher then the director Mr. Insel, got permission to hold meeting and gave motice in the school On returning to Mr. Fallin had dinner then had a friendly talk upon the prin- [Page 146, fd 2, item 151] ciples of the Gospel finding him well posted in Mormonism and Mormon history. Were invited to stop with them all night and were treated with the best of kindness by Mr. Fallin. After supper we went to the school house and preached to an audience of about 25, its being so stormy but few came. At the close of meeting gave out another appointment for tomorrow night and we then returned to Mr. Fallins. Mr. Fallin is spiritualist. 3 miles. Friday Oct 26. After breakfast spent the morning mostly in talking to Mrs. Fallin, Done some sewing to my pants. After dinner went and helped the [Page 147, fd 2, item 152] boys out some wood then returned to house and found one of Mr. Fallins grand daughter there who was playing on the piano which brought the past when home among my associates vividly to my mind. She played Silvery Waves and some other familiar pieces. Had supper then went to meeting and spoke to an audience numbering about 40 but there being objections to holding any more meetings did not give out any appointments. Was invited home by Wm. Rush and stoped all night with him. Saturday, Oct 27th Breakfast with Mr. Rush after which [Page 148, fd 2, item 153] some of the family being interested in our hymns. I sang some. Went to the school house about 9 oclock and swept it out then went to Mr. John S. Fallin again and helped the boys cut some wood. Dinner with Mr. Gallin then talked and read to him about the Book of Mromon. We went to Fairland to get mail just before supper, but I recd none. After supper had a very pleasant talk with Mr. Fallin. 4 miles. During the week have held 3 meetings. Sunday Oct 28 Rainy this morning. After breakfast wrote some letters home then tried to sing some playing accompaniment [Page 149, fd 2, item 154] on the piano. Mr. Fallin came in the room and played and sang some but not being well and being feeble could not sing without fatiguing himself. He is an old gentleman, nearly 83 years of age. Had a large chicken for dinner so large that I thought it was a turkey. Spent the afternoon reading a[nd] talking also evening after supper. The past three days has been an intellectual feast for me, Mr. Fallin being a well informed man on general history & Bible prophecies.

Monday Oct 29th Weather more pleasant this morning but considerable [Page 150, fd 2, item 155] water caused by the rains. After breakfast went to Fairland to post our letters and got some stationary. Took dinner with Mr. Fallin then left bidding them goodbye going south to seek houses to preach in, inquiring at the first house south then the next and then to Boys Town but failed. Its beginning to get dark we began to ask for lodging and succeeded at the sixth house. Mr. Eli Johnston where we got supper and stoped all night. 13 miles. 1 mile ride. Tuesday Oct. 30th Breakfast at Eli Johnson after which went to Fairland going through Boys Town, got per- [Page 151, fd 2, item 156] mission to hold a meeting tonight in the old school house, gave notice of it in school then went 2 miles south west to see Mr. David Ray, township trustee of Sugar Creek township, got his permission to hold meeting and had dinner with him. Went to Fairland and held our meeting this evening there being about 200 present. Not having an invitation home with any one we walked to Mr. Fallins and awoke them, they being in bed but was made welcome. No supper. Found Mr. Fallin some worse. 10 miles riding 1 mile. Wednesday Oct 31st The morning clear and pleasant as was yesterday. Breakfast [Page 152, fd 2, item 157] at Mr. Fallins but he was unable to eat with us. During the fornoon his daughter, a very intelligent lady, came in and was introduced to him. After dinner mrs. Farres, Mr. Fallins daughter played some pieces on the piano. About two oclock left Mr. Fallin and went to the school house south of Fairland, got the key of house and in the evening by invitation went to as Mr. David Bradly to supper, after which held meeting to an audience of about 18. At close of meeting was invited home by Mr. Gebhardt. 3 miles. Thursday, No[v] 1st Breakfast at Mr. Gebhardts after which I went to the *Page 153, fd 2, item 158] school house and swept it out and the teacher said there were objections to holding more meetings in the house but he had none himself. Returned to Mr. Gebhardt, read and talked some to him then wrote a report to Bro. S. R. Marks. Had dinner then went to Fairland, posted my letter, then went west 2 miles and held meeting in a school house having an audience numbering about 25. After meeting was invited home by Mr. Wm. R. Ensminger. 3 mile Friday, Nov. 2d. Pleasant day. Remained all day at Ensmingers helped saw some wood in the forenoon. Breakfast dinner & supper with him. [Page 154, fd 2, item 159] Held another meeting this evening at the school house to an audience numbering about 12. After meeting were invited to MR. W. V. Kelley by one of his boys, which we accepted. Saturday Nov 3 Breakfast and dinner at W. V. Kelleys. During*ing+ the forenoon read and talked some and after dinner read the [?] of the divinity of the Book of Mormon at which Mrs. K. seemed much interested.

About 4 oclock rode to Fairland to see if there was my mail but was disappointed in not getting any then came to Mr. John S. Fallens finding him about as well as usual. *Page 155, fd 2, item 160] Had supper and remained, 4 meetings, all night. 3 miles riding, 2 miles. Sunday, Nov 4th Clear & pleasant this morning. After breakfast wrote some letters home then had dinner finishing one letter afterwards. Had a nap this afternoon and after supper talked with Mr. Fallin awhile then retired. Monday Nov 5th Breakfast with Mr. Fallin then about 9 oclock bid them good bye went to Fairland to post some letters thence north of west about 5 miles to a school house which we got permission to hold meeting. Went to a Mr. L. W. Hoop and got dinner and in the afternoon went to the [Page 155, fd 2, item 162 (item 161 is a duplicate of item 160)] school house gave notice of the meeting then went to a Mr. Smith and remained till meeting. Held meeting having an audience of about 20. At close of meeting were invited home by Mr. S. Hoop. Rained considerable at close of meeting and got wet going to Mr. Hoops. No supper. 7 miles. Gave notice of another meeting tomorrow night at this place. Fuesday, Nov 6th Remained all day at Mr. Lewis Hoop helping cut some wood in the forenoon and reading some in the afternoon. Breakfast dinner and supper with Mr. Hoop. Held another meeting this evening audience numbering about 75. [Page 157, fd 2, item 163] At the close gave out another appointment for tomorrow evening and was invited home again by Mr. Lewis Hoop. 1 miles. Wednesday Nov. 7th Spent the forenoon reading and helped Mr. Hoop sort his corn. This afternoon read some then went and helped gather a load of corn from the field. Held another meeting this evening having a fair sized audience. At the close of meeting were asked a gret many questions by Mr. Stewart, the school teacher, and Mr. Wanahan, in regard to polygamy. Gave notice of another meeting tomorrow night. Breakfast, dinner, and supper at Mr. Hoops. [Page 158, fd 2, item 164] Returned to Mr. Hoops again this evening. 1 mile. Thursday, Nov. 8 Worked in the cornfield helping Mr. Hoop gather his corn, he having a bad cold was unable to be out. In the evening went to the school house and held another meeting, speaking upon the Book of Mormon. At the close of the meeting, its being our last meeting here, several gentleman came up and shook hands with us bidding us goodbye. Mr. Jno. Hanahan of Action, Marion Co. Ind., handed us a paper with about 13 questions written which we endeavored to answer. Returned to Mr. Louis Hook and reminisced [Page 159, fd 2, item 165] all night, but before retiring read to Mr. Geo. Green from the Voice of Warning and talked with him till twelve oclock. 1 mile. Friday, Nov. 9th

Breakfast with Mr. Louis Hoop then about 8.3 A.M. on leaving. Mr. Hoop remained much touched in feeling at our departure, , wished us well and said we would be welcome any time to return. Went to Fairland got 8 letters from home after meeting nearly 2 weeks without any news from home was therefore welcome. Recd $5.00 from Albert in his letter. We then went to Mr. J. S. Fallins being greeted by Mrs. Fallin with home again, where we ate dinner. Towards evening went to Mr. Wm. [Page 160, fd 2, item 166] Rush took supper with and remained all night. 8 miles. Saturday, Nov. 10. Rained all night and cloudy this morning. After breakfast read from the W. of W. to the Rush and family. Called on the director of the school house, Mr. Emel, to see if we could have some more meetings in Rush School house, but more refused some offering objections, we then returned to Mr. Rushs to dinner. After dinner returned to Mr. Gallins and remained all night. Bro. Barnes went to Fairland and got some more letters for us which were very welcome, but mine contained the sad news of the death of my [Page 161, fd 2, item 167+ cousins Ollie Kimballs little child alos of *?+ We have eld 4 meetings this week. 1 mile. Monday, Nov. 12 Clear and cold this morning freezing last night. After breakfast went to Fairland and posted our letters then on returning to Fallins assisted some in butchering a hog. After meeting were invited home by a Mr. F. A. H. Means. No supper. 3 miles. Mr. Means lives with his father-in-law F. Graham. Tuesday, Nov 13th. Breakfast with Mr. Means then I went to the school house and swept it out, returned to Mr. Means read and talked to the folks till dinner time. About 3.30 we went to the school house again, held another meeting in the evening after which we were invited home by Mr. Richard C. Mann. 4 miles. Wednesday, Nov. 14 Cold with frost falling and wind blowing. Breakfast [Page 163, fd 2, item 169] with Mr. Mann after which I read and talked to him and his family. Had dinner then about 2 oclock left and went to Mr. Geo. Martin and remained all night. No supper. 6 miles. Thursday, Nov 15th. Breakfast with Geo. Martin then called on James Johnson finding his wife sick, having given birth to a daughter about then days since. Had a few minutes chat then bade them goodbye going to Palestine where I received 3 papers and 2 letters then went on to James Burns but no one being home we went to his neighbor Wm. Rusharp where we got dinner and supper remaining all night. In the

evening [Page 164, fd 2, item 170+ talked to him and family till about ten oclock upon the gospel. To day has been a severe, cold day with wind blowing from north west. 11 miles, 1 mile ride. Friday, Nov. 16th Breakfast at Wm. Rusharps then called upon James Burns got Bro. Barnes Valise and went to Mr. Geo. Yearling took dinner and in the afternoon helped him gather some corn. Had supper and remained all night. 9 miles. Saturday, Nov 17th Breakfast with Geo. Yearling after which called at Mr. John Weber, took dinner but did not see him as he was out [Page 165, fd 2, item 171] hunting rabbits. After dinner we went to Mr. John S. Fallin where we had supper and remained all night. Found Mr. Fallin about as well as usual. This afternoon was more pleasant the weather having moderated. 7 miles rode 1 mile. Held 2 meetings this week. Sunday Nov. 18th After breakfast spent the forenoon in writing letters, and afternoon in reading from the News and talking to Mr. and Mrs. Fallin. In the evening we read from the Book of Mormon. Monday, Nov. 19th Breakfast with Mr. Fallin. Going on south we came to a school house and going to see the director, Mr. Bowls, he replied he didnt want to hear any such religion. We then went to Hendricks township saw the [?] trustee but he said the school law provided that no meeting should be held while there is school but the directors might do as they please. We then commenced inquiring for lo[d]ging and at the 8th place obtaining a shelter with James Howell. Had supper with him. 14 miles. Tuesday, Nov. 20th Raining this morning. Breakfast with Mr. Howells and also dinner. In the afternoon went north about a mile and got permission to hold meeting in a school house there. Had an audience numbering about twelve. After meeting it seemed as though we would be left in the school house but Mr. Howell came back and invited us with him. No supper. 3 miles. Wednesday, Nov 21st Breakfast with Mr. Howell then went to the school house through a hard rain and swept the house out then went to Smithland to see about getting a house but the teacher could not let us know until the afternoon, so we [Page 168, fd 2, item 174+ then went south to Mr. Philip Yearlings with whom we took dinner. In the afternoon went to Smithland to see the teacher of the school who said we had better get the church so we returned to Mr. Yearlings again through a drenching rain. Breakfast with Philip Yearling then as it was so wet and stormy we concluded to go to Mr. J. S. Fallins. Left Mr. Yearling at 7.30 and the water being so high we had *Page 169, fd 2, item 175] to wade some and got our feet wet. Went by way of Shelbyville stopping there to visit the Distillery and were shown through the works by Mr. Bates. On arriving at Fairland recd a letter from Bro. S.R. Marks telling us to come in as soon as convenient. When we came to Mr. Fallins changed our clothes and made ourselves dry. Supper with Fallins. 18 miles. Friday, Nov 23d. Breakfast at Mr. J. S. Fallins after which I tried to sing and play the accompaniment upon the piano. About 9.30 A.M. we bade the folks good bye and started on our return to headquarters, near Covington, going to Fairland to [Page 170, fd 2, item 176] take the train, but finding it was delayed by high water we concluded to go to Mr. James Burns and ramin all night then start from there in the morning. Stoped at John Webers for dinner after which we proceeded on to Mr. Burns having to go through fields to get by the high waters. Supper with Mr. Burns. 16 miles. Saturday, Nov. 24 Breakfast with Mr. Burns then walked to Indianapolis. Had lunch at a restaurant then went to the depot but was somewhat disappointed to find the train for Covington did not leave till 5.10 P.M. so we got our hair trimed and rested ourselves waiting till train time. [Page 171, fd 2, item 177] Bought a lunch took train for Covington walking from there to Shelbys where we found Elder J. E. Booth, J.W. Coons, and Ashby. Sunday Nov. 25 Breakfast with Oliver Shelby after which Bros Booth, Coon & I walked over to Johnsonville where we attended meeting at 2 oclock in the afternoon. I having the privilege to speak and bear my testimony. Met Bro. Marks Butler and Durfee at Johnsons were we had dinner. Remained all night at Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons in company with Bro. Marks. Marks and I took train for Danville where I bought a pair of pants and boots. We then went to Covington by train where I got some letters rode to Shelbys in a wagon, had upper and remained all night. 29 miles, 23 by R.R. Thursday, Nov 29th Breakfast with Mr. O. Shelby then Bros Marks, Barnes, Ashby and I walked to Covington where we took train for Victursberg called at Sister Thomas [Page 174, fd 2, item 180] a short time then upon Mr. Sester where we took dinner. After dinner walked back to Mr. Shelbys where we had supper and remained all night. 20 miles R.R. 8 miles. Friday, Nov 20th Breakfast with Mr. Shelby then Bro. Marks and I took train for Johnsonville going by way of Danville. Had dinner at Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons then went to Bro. Wm. Nelwels where we remained all night 25 miles by R.R. and 1 miles walk. Saturday Dec. 1 Breakfast with Bro. Wm. Newel then Bros. Marks, Durfee and I walked to Johnsonville and took the 7.10 train for Attica where Bro. [Page 175, fd 2, item 181] Marks and I had our photos taken together. We returned to Johnsonville on the noon train I going to Wm. Newels to dinner. In the evening went to Johnsonville and returned to Bro. Newles. 1 meeting this week. 26 miles R.R. 3 miles walk. Sunday, Dec 2d Breakfast with Bro. Wm. Newel after which I wrote a letter then we all went to Johnsonville to meeting. After meeting Bro. Marks and I went to Bro. Cronkhites to dinner then in the evening returned to Johnsonville to attend another meeting at 6 P.M. at which I had the privilege of speaking. Went home with Bro. Marks, Durfee, Newel and I then went to Johnsonville where I took train for Covington going by way of Danville. Bade Bro. Marks good bye as he expects to start for home today being released from his mission. Arrived at Shelbys in the evening, had supper and remained all night. Bros.. Wednesday Dec 5th Breakfast with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson then wrote some letters home. After dinner went to Bro. Newels to fix my clothes up some. Returned to Bro. Got some plates put on the heel of my boots then walked to Shelbys meeting Elder James Anderson on the road. At Shelbys met Elder Rueben Farnsworth who with Bro. Anderson came the night beore. After breakfast Bro Stookey and I went to Covington. I posted my letters, got my boots sewed, my watch fixed and bought some stationary. Stookey, Miner, Booth and I went to Covington where we separated, Bros. Stookey and Miner going to Johnsonville preparatory to starting an other tour and Bro. Booth and I going south. Booth had quite a discussion, but was refused school house alos. Mr. Raredon is a Baptist minister. We then applied for a place to stop and at the 8th place, Wm. Jones, remained all night. 8 miles. Saturday Mar. 8th Snowed last night but stoped before morning. After breakfast we started for Vicolessburgh but stoped at a house on the road for an hour or more but the lady was so [?] she gave us a strong hint to leave, and we left, arriving at Seter Thomas andSister about 1 oclock. In the afternoon went to [Page 11, fd 1, item 16+ Covington, posted my letters got my pants that had been mended and returned to Shelbys. Rained some this afternoon. 4 miles. We[d]nesday, Mar. 12. After breakfast Mr. Shelby wished me to oil the wind mill, which I did, then wrote a letter to [?]. After dinner Bro. Booth and I went over to Bro. Wm. Newels, had supper and remained all night. Plenty of mud. 10 miles. Thursday, Mar. 13 Breafast with Bro. Wm. Newel then made out a statistical report of the Indiana Conference. Mr. Bro. Booth & I then went to Bro. Geo. W. Johnson, had dinner then went to Bro. Josephus Cronkhites, had supper and stoped all night. 4 mi. [Page 12, fd 1, item 17] Friday, March 14 After breakfast went out with Bro Cronkhites to get corn fodder to see the [?]; caught 4. Mr. then went to Mr. Strong @ Cronkhites but he was not at home. Had dinner with the folks and about four oclock returned to Bro. J. Cronskhites. Had supper and remained all night. 5 miles. Saturday mar. 15 After Brakfast made a kite for the boys but not having a string strong enough could not fly it. After dinner with Bro. Cronkhite went to Johnsonville then from there I went to Bro. Newels had supper and remained all night. 3 miles, 3 meetings. Sunday, March 16th After breakfast went to Johnsonville but on learning of [Page 13, fd 1, item 18] the death of Mr. Mathias, one of Bro. Johnsons tenants, Bro. Booth concluded to not have a meeting as was previously planned. We had dinner with Bro. Johnson, then I took a nap after which we went to Bro. W. Johnsons and remained all night. 2 miles. Breakfast with Bro. N. Johnson then a 7.15 oclock Bro. Booth and I took train for Attica then from there to Shelbys. Received some letters and wrote some. After dinner rode Bro. Shelbys horse to town to post my letters and recd some more mail; returned had supper, took a bath and retired for the night. 26 mi by R.R. walk back 4 mi. [Page 14, fd 1, item 19] Tuesday, Mar. 18th. Remained at Shelbys all day. In the forenoon helped moved some things for house cleaning and in the afternoon red most of the time. Wednesday, Mar. 19th Still at Shelbys and after dinner went to Covington got my boots mended, recd a letter from Albert and returned to Shelbys. In the evening Mrs. Yager played some on the piano and sang. 4 mi. Thursday Mar. 20 After breakfast went to Covington to meet Bro. S. B. Dallins, who promised to call to see me on his way home but he did not come on the morning train, so in the evening went to meet the train again taking Bro. Shelby [Page 15, fd 1, item 20] team and had the pleasure of meeting Bro. Dallas. We went to Shelbys had a talk till nearly eleven oclock then retired. 9 miles. Rode 4 . Friday, Mar. 21 After breakfast Bro. Dallas and I went to town, remained till mail came in then returned to Shelbys had dinner then I made a fire in the front room then sang some but having a cold could not sing much. After supper Bro. Shelby went to Covington to meeting Sr. Shelby and took Bro. Dallas to the train. I also going along. Bro. Booth started for Minesota on same train, so I bade them both good bye and returned with Bro. Shelby [Page 16, fd 1, item 21] Walked 4 miles and rode 4 miles. Saturday, Mar 22 Spent the day doing odd jobs for Shelby, fixing hay rack, chicken nests &c. In the evening rode to town and back on Shelbys horse. 4 miles ride. Sunday, Mar 23 Clear and pleasant this morning after raining last night. After reakfast wrote some letters then had dinner. In the afternoon rode horses back with Mr. Shelby down on the river bottoms to see the destruction of fences &c by the flood, returning by evening when we boiled some potatoes on the dining room stove and ate them for lunch. Tuesday, Mar. 25 After breakfast took train for Toledo at 7.15 A.M. arriving there at 5.10 P.M. then took train for Elyria, arriving at 9 P.M. and put up at the Beebe House. 321 miles by R.R. Wednesday, Mar. 26 Breakfast at the hotel then went out west of town in [Page 18, fd 1, item 23] a rain about 3 miles to mr. Egbert Squires with whom John Thatcher had stoped while on his mission. Was received with kindness and had dinner after which I went south about 3 miles to Bro. John Grills where I had supper and remained all night. 6 mile.s Thursday, Mar. 27 Clear and pleasant this morning. Remained at Bro. John Grills till after dinner then went to Elyria and called upon Sister Enea [?] had supper with them and upon the invitation of Mr. Crabtree remained all night. 3 miles. Friday, Mar. 28th Breakfast at Mr. Crabtree then at 6 oclock A.M. took train for Cleveland arriving *Page 19, fd 1. Item 19] at 7 A.M. then at 8 oclock took train for East Rochester arriving there at noon in a rain. Uncle Eli and cousin S[?] were there to meet me but I not seeing them walked up to Uncle Elis, knocked at the door when Aunt Susan came to the door and presently Uncle Eli and Susie came and were surprised to see me tere. Had dinner then Susie and I called at David Davis a few minutes, then went on to Uncle Moses where I had supper and remained all night. 96 miles. Saturday, Mar. 29 After breakfast Susie and I went to the woods and found the beach tree upon which we had cut our names on Feb [Page 20, fd 1, item 25] 12t 1873 then returned to the house had dinner when uncle Moses hitched up his team and Susie went up to cousins Howards. Returning he came to East Rochester and there I received several letters and we then went back to Uncle Moses. Susie being chilled through with the cold wind. We had supper then played authors awhile. 4 miles rode. Sunday, Mar 30 After breakfast went to Sunday school with Susie was invited to give the opening prayer also at the meeting after school the preacher requested me to give the opening and closing prayer which I did. After meeting called on Aunt Hannah Primm and had dinner with them [Page 21, fd 1, item 26] then called at Aunt Susans awhile then back to uncle Moses and stoped all night. Monday Mar 31 After breakfast went over to Aunt Susans and wrote some letters then had dinner and wrote some more letters. After supper we talked till bed time then retire. Tuesday April 1st

Ater breakfast Uncle Eli and I went down to the R.R. station and I posted my letters. In the afternoon after dinner we went to the mill dam to fish, uncle Eli catching one sucker. Howard came down and wished me to go home with him which I did and remained all night having supper with him 2 mi. Wednesday April 2d After breakfast I went with [Page 22, fd 1, item 27] Howard and George Stackhouse to see some fine sheep he had. After dinner returned to Aunt Susans in a snow storm went to the P.O. and received a letter from mother. Had supper and stoped all night with Aunt Susan. 2 mi. Thursday, April 3 Cold and wind this morning and some snow on the ground. In the afternoon Susie came in and remained till evening when I went home with her and returned to aunt Susans remaining all night. Friday, April 4 After breakfast read some and took a nap. In the afternoon went to [?] with [?] Taylor gathering at *?+ *Page 22, fd 1, item 28+ McDonald on the way and on returning had supper at aunt Susans then went to uncle Moses and came with Susie to the meeting of the association at aunt Susan. After meeting went home with Susie and remained all night. Rode 8 miles. Saturday April 5 Remained at uncle Moses till about 4 oclock in the afternoon then went to aunt Susans again. Cut a little wood for uncle Eli then had supper and remained all night. Sunday, April 6th After breakfast wrote a letter then uncle Elis, Aunt Susan and I went to Morris Taylors had dinner with them. In the evening Moses and I called [Page 24, fd 1, item 29] on Enoch Wickessham. I remained all night with Morris. Rode 2 miles. Monday, April 7th After breakfast wrote a letter to mother then went to Rochester to post my letters, called on uncle Nate Pimm had dinner with him, then went to Aunt Susans remained till evening when I went to Uncle Moses had supper, after which Susie and I called on Mr. Will R*?+ at Uncle Moses all night. Rode 1. Tuesday, April 8 After breakfast called at Aunt Susans awhile then went to Uncle Nates had dinner and we intended to take tain for Minerva but were too late. I then went to Aunt Susans and we went *Page 25, fd 1, item 30+ up to Howards to get some wheat, sugar &c returning in the evening, had supper. I remained all night. Rode 4 mi. Wednesday, April 9

After breakfast made arrangements to go to Minerva on the noon train. Dinner with Uncle [?] then we took train went to Minerva and stoped at Uncle Baylis Davis, but he did know me at first. Thursday, April 10 After breakfast took a walk down in the south west part of town, then uncle Nate and I called on Uncle Alberts two daughters, Mrs. Criss & Tanner, from there going to Fremont Davis then returned to Uncle Baylis and had dinner. In the afternoon I took train to Bayard then walked from [Page 26, fd 1, item 31] then to Uncle Elis. Had supper then Susie came in and I walked home with her returning to Aunt Susans wrote some letters to the Elders. R.R. 2 miles, Walked 2 miles. Friday, April 11th After breakfast Aunt Susan and I went to James Weavers and spent the day returning after supper. Stoped all night with Counsin David Davis. Rode 8 miles. Saturday April 12 Remained at cousin David Davis till after dinner then went to Aunt Susans got some mending done then went home with severe took a walk trough the woods returned and remained all night at Uncle Moses. Sunday April 13 After breakfast went to Aunt *Page 27, fd 1, item 32+ Susans to change my clothes then Susie came for me to go to Sunday School. Attended Sunday School and meeting, returned to Uncle Moses, and had dinner. In the afternoon went to Aunt Susans and in the evening we attended church. Remained all night with Aunt Susan. Monday April 14 Wrote some letters this fore-noon and one this afternoon. About 3 oclock this afternoon went over to Uncle Moses to see him start for Indiana and he made me a present of $10. Ten dollars. Went to Bayard with him returning put up the team, done the feeling and remained all night. [Page 28, fd 1, item 33] Tuesday, April 15 After breakfast I hitched the horses to the buggie then Susie and I went to see Oliver and Rachel Taylor. Remained there till after supper then returned and I put the horses in the stable, fed them and then went to Aunt Susans and remained all night. Rode 8. Wednesday, April 16th After breakfast read some and took a nap. Spent most of the afternoon in reading the Journal of Discourses. Went to Uncle Moses to feed the stock, returned to Aunt Susans had supper then went home with Susie and remained all night.

Thursday, April 17 After breakfast [?] and {Page 29, fd 1, item 34] fed the horses then read some from Journal of Discourses. After dinner took a nap then went to Aunt Susans, wrote some letters, one to Albert, had supper and remained all night. Friday April 18th Between breakfast and dinner read some then after dinner went to Minerva to Uncle Baylis. After supper took a walk around town and in the had a talk with Uncle Baylis on religion but we could not agree. 4 miles. Saturday, April 19th After breakfast Uncle Baylis and I walked around town some and then I went to Cousin Willies to dinner. In the afternoon went to cousin Fremonts and had my teeth cleaned and one filled he being [Page 30, fd 1, item 35] a dentist then called at Cousin Elmers to see his family. Rode back to East Rochester with Aunt Susan and remained all night with her. 4 miles ride. Sunday April 20th After breakfast started to Salem with Counsins David, Sue and Beckie Davis. We stoped at Uncle Nathan Johns for dinner then went on to Nathan Coberns where we got supper and remained all night. Rode 18 miles. Monday April 21 After breakfast we all with Nora Coburn went to the town and I had my picture taken while the others were shoping. Returned to Cobins had dinner then started back to East Rochester. I went *Page 31, fd 1, item 36+ to Aunt Susans and recd three letters, one from mother the first for 2 weeks then went home with Cousin Sue, had supper and remained all night. 18 miles ride. Thursday, April 22d After breakfast I cleaned out the stables and [?] the horses for Uncle Moses he being away from home yet, then went over to Aunt Susans, had dinner and in the afternoon Uncle Eli and I went up to Howards after some straw, called at Morris on the way back. Had supper then went to Aunt Hannahs a short time, returned and remained all night at Aunt Susans. Rode 4 miles. Wednesday, April 23d After breakfast shaved, read some and talked to Aunt Susan [Page 32, fd 1, item 37] in the afternoon about 4.15 oclock took train for Johnsonville, Uncle Eli taking his buggie and horse and Susie accompanying me over to Bayard. Thursday, April 24 Arrived at Johnsonville about noon meeting Elders Bean, Jackson, and Schaffer who had just come from Utah. Had dinner with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson, then went to Bro. Wm. Newels meeting. Elders Bell and Lemon on the road, had supper and remained all night. R.R. 396 miles.

Friday, April 25 Helped to haul hay for Bro. Newel all day and in the evening attended meeting at Johnsonville, at which we got acquainted with several of the Elders [Page 33, fd 1, item 38] who had just come out. Returned after meeting to Bro. Newels. Saturday April 26 Our conference commended this morning with the following Elders present, Pres. J. E. booth, Thomas E. Olsen, R.R. Farnsworth, E.S. Stookey, James A. Anderson, E. F. Greenwood, Victor E. Bean, Oscar Rose, Joseph Jackson. In the forenoon was called upon to make a few remarks. After meeting in the evening went to Bro. G. W. Johnson. [Page 54, fd 1, item 39] Sunday, May 25 [1884] Some rain last night. Remained till meeting time at Mr. Geo Petyner having breakfast and dinner with him. Had a good attendance at meeting and at the close were invited home by Mr. Benjaman Fuller, and had supper with him and remained all night. Monday, May 26th Foggy this morning. Breakfast with Mr. Fuller then went to C[?] Park to post our letters, from there we applied for a school house four miles south west but the director Mr. Rentz said we had better go to the next house west as the people were mostly Germans in his neighborhood. After having dinner with him we applied for the next house and got permission to preach this evening [Page 34, fd 1, item 40] and remained all night. Sunday, April 27 Today we continued our conference, I being one to speak in the forenoon. At the afternoon meeting the Sacrament was administered and the Authorities of the Church were presented to the conference. This conference adjourned in the evening s[?], having held 10 meetings. Remained all night with Bro. J. Cronkhite. 3 miles. Monday, April 28th After breakfast I wrote some letters home then went to Johnsonville where Elders Stookey, Durfee and I took train for Danville. I getting some clothing. Returning we walked from State line then I went to Bro. [Page 35, fd 1, item 41] Newels to supper. In the evening we held another meeting after which Elder Ashby and I went to Bro. N. Johnsons and remained all night. R.R. 17 mi. Walked 5 mi. Tuesday, April 29 After breakfast went to Bro. Geo. W. In the afternoon walked over to Shelbys calling at Bro. Wm. Newels on the way. Arrived at Shelbys received my photographs and a letter from Bro. G. R. Marks. Wrote a letter to Aunt Susan and to Mr. Morris A. Davis, then had supper. 12 miles walk. Thursday, May 1st After breakfast helped to milk the cows then spent the forenoon and part of the afternoon in writing letters. To day ate the first cat fish I remember of eating. In the evening Bor Barnes and I took trains for Johnsonville going by way of Attica. [Page 37, fd 1, item 43] Stoped all night with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson. R.r. 26 mi. Friday, May 2d After breakfast Elders Bean, Barnes & I went down to Bro. Wm. Newels and attended the baptism of Sister sula Newel, the ordinance being performed by Pres. J. E. Booth. After dinner we confirmed her a member of the Church, I being mouth. Bro. Bean and I, we being appointed to travel together, then started north on a train. After being refused 9 places we stoped all night in a church. No supper. 13 miles. Saturday, May 3d. Walked about one mile west and at second place of asking got breakfast with Mr. Geo. Mcqueen. We then went west into Vermilion Co. Ill., where we got permission to hold a [Page 38, fd 1, item 44] meeting in a school house. While giving out notice of the meeting were invited to dinner at Mr. C. Witman which we accepted; they also informed us we could remain all night if no one asked us home from meeting. Went to the school house and remained till evening but its having commenced raining in the afternoon there were but few came to meeting [?] we had none and went back to Mr. Witman and remained all night, having a piece of pie before retiring. 8 mi. Sunday May 4th Still stormy bad day. Remained at Mr. C. Witmans till after noon having breakfast and dinner there then went down the road near the school house [?] sat down a little while then went to a Mr. Ed. Soller [Page 39, fd 1, item 45] where we got the privilege of stopping all night but had no supper. 1 miles. Monday, May 5th After breakfast went to Rossville with Edward Soller, he going for lumber. Saw Mr. W. J. Henderson who has a hall in town and got permission to hold a meeting in it tomorrow night. He also invited us to dinner and to remain all night which we accepted thankfully. After dinner went about of

mile south of town where I wrote two letters then returned to Mr. Hendersons had supper. Rode 6 mi. Walked 1 mi. Tuesday, May 6th After breakfast we left Mr. Hendersons and went about four miles west to the McMain school house where we got permission to hold meeting and gave out an [Page 40, fd 1, item 46] appointment for tomorrow night. Called at a Mr. Jacob Watts close by and got dinner, then went to Rodsville, got the key to the hall and remained till meeting. Had an audience of about 100 persons, all men. After meeting went to Mr. W. J. Hendersons and remained all night again. Walked 8 miles Rode 2 miles. Wednesday May 7th Breakfast at *?+ Mr. Henderson then about 7 oclock left his house with an invitation to call again if passing by. Called at a Mr. Fairchild go dinner then spent the afternoon in reading. Had a meeting this evening with large audience but at close of meeting no one inviting us home went to a Mr. J. M. Geddes and remained all night. 5 miles. [Page 41, fd 1, item 47] Thursday, May 8th After breakfast with Mr. Geddes went west to next school house and applied for it but were refused. Got dinner with Mr. C. S. Bratton, then went south east to a school house south of where we held meeting last night and permission to hold a meeting tomorrow evening and one of the directors, Mr. [?] told us we were welcome to something to eat and a bed to sleep in so we stoped for supper also remained all night. 8 miles. Friday, May 9th Beautiful moonlight night last night and clear and cool this morning. Breakfast at Mr. Clamson Albright and remained all day having dinner & supper also. In the afternoon Bro Bean and I made a [?] for their well [Page 42, fd 1, item 48] house. This evening filled our appointment of meeting but the audience being small we made no other appointments. Returned to Mr. Albrights and stoped all night. 1 miles. Saturday, May 10th Raining and cold this morning but became more pleasant in the afternoon. We remained at Mr. Albrights till after dinner then went north west towards [?] Co. After asking for lodging at three places got to stop with Mr. M. S. [?]. After supper several of his neighbors came and I talked upon the principles of the Gospel. 9 mi. 3 meetings. Sunday, May 11th After breakfast tried to get a school house near by but failed. Had dinner with a Mr. Debolt then went to East Lynn [Page 43, fd 1, item 49] tried to get the church then the school house but failed in both, then went on north into Iroquis Co. and after asking three times got to sop with Mr. John E. Gestzenaner

all night. Had supper. 1 mi. Monday, May 12th Breakfast with John E. Gestzenaner then went to Goodwine Station posted some letters and received some. We then tried to see the directors fo the church but failed, then tried to get a school house south east about 2 miles and failed, so we returned to Goodwine and by the influence of Mr. Wm. Goodwine got the church for this evening. In the evening the store keeper Mr. Hashke gave us some crackers & cheese and afterwards a Mr. Spain invited us to supper which we accepted. [Page 44, fd 1, item 50] Had a small audience at meeting and were provided a bed by Mr. Goodwines son over the store. Made an appointment for tomorrow. 15 mi. Tuesday, May 13th Had breakfast this morning with Mr. James Spain and remained till after dinner. In leaving were invited to return to supper which we did then held another meeting in the church but a small audience. At close of meeting were invited back by Mr. Spain and up stairs over the store again. 2 mi. Wednesday May 14th Breakfast with Mr. James Spain then went north to the first school houses and got permission tho hold meeting and gave notice of it in the school. We then went to Mr. James Grahams, as Bro. J. Cronkhite wished us to call there [Page 45, fd 1, item 51] he being his brother in law, and had dinner. Mr. Graham was quite poorly. We then went t a small grove of trees and read till nearly meeting time, then went to the school house, held meeting to a small audience and at the close were left in the school house all night. 11 miles. Thursday, Mary 15th This morning a gentleman living near the school by the name of Sharp came and invited us to breakfast saying he did not know we were in the school house all night or he should have invited us home with him last night. After breakfast we went north to the next school house saw the directors and got permission to have a meeting this evening. By invitation we ate dinner with Mr. Geo. McGill one of the directors. After dinner went to the school to give notice of [Page 46, fd 1, item 52] the meeting returning to Mr. Geo. McGills had supper. Small attendance at meeting but gave out notice of another tomorrow night. Stoped all night with Mr. Mc. Gill. 6 miles. Friday May 16th After breakfast we went west to the first school house and applied for it but were refused. We then went North West to the next in Woodworth and were granted the privilege of holding meeting tomorrow night. We ate dinner with Mr. Hastman one of the directors then returned to fill out appointment for this evening. Wrote a letter to my friend Marks and also to Bro. Dallas. After meeting were again invited to Mr. Geo. McGill, 12 miles today. [Page 47, fd 1, item 53] Saturday May 17th

Breakfast with Mr. McGills, we then went west about four miles and got permission to hold a meeting Sunday evening in the Barrett school house. We got our dinner with a Mr. Willis, then went to Ash Grove where I posted some letters and a card to Bro. booth. We then went to the school house near Woodworth where we have an appointment this evening, held our meeting and made another appointment for Monday night here. At the close of meeting were left in the school house all night, so I wrote two letters home. 24 miles. Held 6 meetings this week. Sunday May 18th This morning we went about of a mile west of the school house and got breakfast with [Page 48, fd 1, item 54] a Mr. Munsemann, a German then returned to the school house again and remained till after the services of the German Baptists church. Of course could not understand what was said. We then went south to the directors of the school house where we made our appointment for tonight to get the key to the house but he not being home and it being rainy this afternoon we went under his sheds for protection. Towards evening went to a Mr. Hazelbrink, brother of director and got some supper. Had no dinner. Held meeting, but only four came, at the close went home again with Mr. Hazelbrink. 5 miles. [Page 49, fd 1, item 55] Monday May 19th Breakfast with Henry Hazelbrink but it being rainy we [?] a few minutes before leaving, we then went south to Ash Grove to get the school house but werer refused. We then tried the church but failed in it also, so we went to Woodsworth to fill our appointment there. Called at a Mr. Hartsmans near the school house and got dinner then went to the school house and remained till meeting. The sun set clear. Held our meeting and at the close were left in the school house over night again. No supper. 10 miles. Tuesday May 20 We went about 1 miles west from school house and got breakfast with Mr. F. Berrymeyer one of the school directors then went south west to a school house [Page 40, fd 1, item 56] and got permission to hold a meeting this evening. In giving notice of the meeting we called at a Mr. Roberts who gave us our dinner. While waiting at the school house for meeting time Mr. James Yost, one of the directors of school invited us to supper which we accepted. Held our meeting having an attentive audience at the close made another appointment for tomorrow night. Were invited house by Mr. Lindley, a director of the school 11 miles. Wednesday, May 21 Breakfast with Mr. Lindley then went west and got permission to hold a meeting tomorrow night in a school house. Went to Mr. Pitts, got our dinner and then [Page 51, fd 1, item 57] went into the woods close by and remained during the afternoon. In the evening went to Mr. Lindleys to get the key to the school house and were asked to have supper which we accepted. Returned to the school, held our meeting and at the close were invited home again by Mr. Lindley. 13 miles.

Thursday, May 22. After breakfast with Mr. Lindley we went south about 7 miles to Cisena park where we got our mail. I receiving several letters from home. Tried to get the school house for tomorrow night but failed. Returned to the school house where we have an appointment tonight. Asked for supper at three places, the first giving us a piece of pie each and the last, W.H. Rogers, [Page52, fd 1, item 58] giving us our supper. Had a good attentive audience at meeting tonight but objections were offered to holding another meeting. After meeting were taken home by Mr. W. H. Rogers. 14 miles. Friday, May 23. Breakfast with W. H. Rogers, then went south two miles to the Pond Lilly school house and got permission to hold meeting tonight. Had dinner with R. McBride one of the directors, then went south two more miles to make an appointment in the next school house for tomorrow night but were refused. Met with a Mr. Gillin who said he had two brothers and one sister in Utah. While passing by the school house [?] for [page 53, fd 1, item 59] meeting time a Mr. fuller invited us to supper which we accepted. At close of meeting gave an appointment for tomorrow. Were invited home by Mr. John Reed. 14 miles. Saturday, May 24th. Breakfast with Mr. John Reed then we went into the barn and lay down upon the hay to read and took a nap. Had dinner then I helped Mr. Reed get a load of hay. After supper went to meeting and at the close of our remarks a Mr. Moore got up and accused the Mormons all kinds of wickedness even to murders. Had a history purporting to be the history of Mormonism. At the close of the meeting were invited home by Mr. Pitzer. Gave an appointment for meeting tomorrow at 3 oclock in the afternoon. 7 meetings this week. 2 miles today. [Page 54, fd 1, item 60] Sunday May 25. Some rain last night. Remained till meeting time at Mr. Geo Pitzers having breakfast and dinner with him. Had a good attendance at meeting and at the close were invited home by Mr. Benjamin Fuller and had supper with him and remained all night. Monday May 26th. Foggy this morning. Breakfast with Mr. Fuller then went to Cisena Park to post our letters, from those we applied for a school house four miles south west, but the director Mr. Rentz said we had better go to the next house west as the people were mostly Germans in his neighborhood. After having dinner with him we applied for the next house and got permission to preach this evening. [Page 55, fd 1, item 61] Very small audience this evening at meeting. Were invited home by Mr. Strop one of the directors. Had some pie then retired. 14 miles. Tuesday May 27th. Breakfast with Mr. Strop then went south and applied for the next school house but were refused, continued south into Ford Co. Ills. And after asking three times got some dinner. Then went to

the town of Button and applied for the schoolhouse and were refused. We then applied for lodging and after asking 7 times received accommodations at Mr. Pattens. Had supper. 15 miles. Wednesday May 28. Breakfast with Mr. Patten then crossed over into Champaign Co. and applied for the first school house but were refused by the teacher, we then went on south and applied for the Kinder school house and met [Page 56, fd 1, item 62] with success. Mr. Lewis [?] one of the directors invited us to dinner and made us welcome the afternoon so we had supper also. Said he was well acquainted with Geo. Nebeker. At the close of meeting invited us home with him again. 8 mi. Thursday, May 29 Just one year ago today I left home, starting upon my mission, its being a bright, sunny day like today. Breakfast with Mr. Lewis [?] then started east going into Vermillion Co. Applied for the first school house we came to and got permission to hold a meeting this evening. Ad dinner with Wm. Stevens one of the directors, then spent the afternoon out of doors. Had a small audience at meeting and at the store. I went home with a Mr. [Page 57, fd 1, item 63] Joseph Cook, Bro. Bean going with Mr. Watts. 8 miles. No supper. Friday, May 30 Breakfast with J. Cook then went to Watts to meet Bro Bean and had quite a talk with him. Watts. We then went on west stoping at Mr. Flanaghan for dinner, that being the third place we asked. We then went to Clanson Albrights where we had supper and stoped all night. 12 mi. Saturday, May 31st Breakfast with Mr. Clanson Albright then started for Johnsonville arriving there between 3 and six oclock in the afternoon without any dinner. Went to the creek and had a good bath then to Bro Geo. Johnsons had supper and remained all night. 4 meetings this week. 23 miles. Sunday, June 1st Breakfast with Bro. Geo. W Johnson. Held a meeting this forenoon then [Page 58, fd 1, item 64] had dinner at Bro. Johnsons. In the afternoon went to Bro. Wm. Newels had supper and remained all night. 1 miles. Monday, June 2d. Breakfast with Bro. Wm. Newel then went to Johnsonville where Bro Bean and I took the eleven oclock train for Danville. While in Danville I bought a pair of boots and a suit of clothes. In the afternoon I took train for Covington and Bro. Bean for Johnsonville. In Covington I bought an umbrella and got my hair cut then went to Shelbys had supper and remained all night. Remained at Shelbys all day writing letters. In the evening Pres. Booth came [?] [Page 59, fd 1, item 65] Wednesday June 4 Wrote five letters to the Elders this morning, then Bor Booth and I rode down to Covington where I took train for Danville. While there changed a pair of pants and bought a linen duster and cover for my umbrella. Returned on the afternoon train to Covington then walked up to Shelbys. R.R. 2 mil 4 mi walk. Shaved off my mustache today for the first time in three or four years. Thursday June 5th Wrote some letters today two to the elders and two home besides sending off about six papers. Bro. Shelby and I rode down to town this afternoon and on our return I read some. [Page 60, fd 1, item 66] Friday June 6th Wrote some more letters again today. This evening got to singing some hymns with elders Stookey and Heywood they having come last night. Recd a letter from mother this evening containing a nice silk handkerchief for my birthday. Saturday, June 7th After having breakfast Bro. Shelby and I rode down to town and saw the [?] come in then I returned and shortly before dinner Elders Farnsworth & Sheffer came in. We then had dinner. In the afternoon I walked to town and got the mail then returned to Shelbys. Had supper intending to take train for Johnsonville but it remained [Page 61, fd 1, item 67] till the [?] was out and I stoped at Shelbys all night. 4 mi. Sunday June 8th Although rainy after breakfast Elders Farnsworth, Sheffer and I started to Johnsonville. Mr. Shelby taking us to the river where we crossed n a boat. We then walked on but the water rising so much found it difficult to get along. Crossed at Johnsoville wet through, had dinner with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson. In afternoon and evening attended meeting bearing a testimony. Elder Stookey and I went to Bro Cronkhite and remained all night. 8 miles. Monday, June 9th Breakfast with Mr. Cronkhite then elder Stoodey and I went to Johnsonville to attend the council meeting. We all had dinner at [Page 62, fd 1, item 68] Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons. I wrote a couple of letters home then Bros Stookey, Heywood and I went to the creek to bathe afterwards going to Mr. Cronkhites when it commenced raining very hard. After rain we went to Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons had supper and remained all night. This afternoon Bro Farnsworth left Johnsonville for Covington from which he will leave for Utah on Wednesday, he and Bro. Stookey being released. 6 miles.

Tuesday, June 10 Remained at Bro. Johnsons till afternoon having breakfast and dinner with him. In the afternoon went to J. Cronkhite had supper. Bros Stookey, Shaffer, & Heywood being there and we remained all night. 2 miles. [Page 63, fd 1, item 69] Wednesday, June 11 Breakfast with Bor. Cronkhite then went to Johnsonville and wrote two letters, one to [?] Susan. Bro. Stookey starting for New York on the 11 oclock we bade him good bye. Had dinner with Bro. Geo. W. Johnson then went to the creek with Bro. Bean and had a bath, then went to Bro. Wm. Newels had supper and remained all night. 4 miles. Thursday June 12th Breakfast with Bro. Newel then elder Bean and I went to Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons got our things and started out on another [?] going to the north west into Ills. We got dinner at a gentlemans about 8 miles from Johnsonville then applied for a school house [?] were refused by the director Mrs. [?]. We then [Page 64, fd 1, item 70] went to [?] and were positively refused their school house there by a Mr. Allison a director. We then on west for are now in Vermillion Co. Ills. And after applying 2 times stoped all night with a Mr. James Dunn and had supper. 15 miles. Friday, June 13th Breakfast with Mr. Dunn, and dinner with a Mr. Copeland after asking [?] different houses. Were refused two school homes today, one at Marysville or Potomac. After asking several times for lodging stoped at the [?] place at Mr. Geo. Parker where we had supper. 10 miles. Saturday, June 14th Breakfast with Mr. Parker then went to Armstrong and applied for the school house but were refused, then crossed [Page 65, fd 1, item 71] into Champaign Co. Ills. And at Pennfield were refused the school house and a church but the director of the school Mr. Bucie gave us our dinner. We next applied for a school house 2 miles northwest of Pennfield and got permission, one of the directors, Mr. Stonestrut inviting us to supper which we accepted. Good attendance at meeting and at close made an appointment for another tomorrow at eleven oclock here. Were invited home by a Mr. Boyce. 17 miles. One meeting. Sunday, June 15th Breakfast with Mr. Boyce and then after sharing went to the school and wrote a letter while waiting for meeting time. But a very few came to meeting and we [Page 66, fd 1, item 72] made no more appointments. Were invited to dinner by a Mr. Stone Strut, brother to the gentleman with whom we had supper last night. Wrote another letter this afternoon then went to Pennfield and posted them. Went to Mr. Cliftons, who invited us home last night had supper and remained all night. 5 miles. Monday, June 16

Breakfast with Mr. Clifton, went north then about 3 miles then west one to a school house which we got permission to hold meeting in this evening. Were invited to dinner by Mr. Condracy one of the directors and who is a Methodist Minister. In the afternoon [?] giving notice of the meeting, and in the evening were again invited by Mr. Robt. Condracy to supper. Only a few attended [Page 67, fd 1, item 73] the meeting at [?] of which Mr. Peer invited us home with him. 13 mils Tuesday June 17th Breakfast with Mr. Peer and on leaving Mrs. Peer invited us to call again. Applied for the next school house north and were refused, also a church in the same neighborhood with like result. We then went west and got permission to hold meeting this evening in the schoolhouse and ate dinner at Mr. Bedellfords one of the directors. In the evening while waiting at the schoolhouse Mr. Johnson, one of the directors, invited us to supper. At the close of the meeting objections were offered to holding another meeting and a Mr. Thompson used very abusive language advocating tar and feathers &e. We were invited [Page 68, fd 1, item 74] by Mr. Johnson to return to his house and remain all night. 12 miles. Wednesday June 18th Breakfast with Mr. Johnson then went wets to apply for school houses passing through the town of Ludlow but [?] in two school houses and two churches. Got some dinner at a Mr. Hendricks and after asking several times for lodging got to stop at the fifth place with Mr. Holmes where we had supper. 12 miles. Thursday, June 19th Breakfast at Mr. Holmes then went to see Mr. Vanscorke one of the directors of the school, having seen one of the others last evening, and got permission to hold meeting tonight. Had dinner with Mr. Vanscorke, then went to the school and gave [Page 69, fd 1, item 75] notice of the meeting. Remained at school house. Had no supper and at close of meeting after waiting about an hour were taken home by Oliver Dillon who not having room in his house gave us some quilts in his granary. 3 mis. Stormy last night and today. Friday, June 20th Breakfast with Oliver Dillon then went west to the next schoolhouse and got permission to hold meeting tonight being invited to dinner by Mr. Grig one of the directors. Met with Mr. W. O. Smith when enquiring for the directors, who said he had a brother [?] Utah. Was much prejudiced against the Mormons. Remained at the schoolhouse till time for meeting and no one coming we then went to the nearest house and got to stop all night with Mr. Carl [Page 70, fd 1, item 76] O. Nelson and had some supper with him. 4 miles. Saturday June 21 Breakfast with Carl O. Nelson then traveled westward again. Were refused the first schoolhouse but succeeded in getting the second. We then went through the district giving notice of meeting tonight and got dinner with Mr. Hall, his being the third place we asked. Had but very few at meeting yet we

talked some and at close of meeting were invited home by Mr. John Sanders and had some supper at his house. 5 meetings 15 miles. Sunday June 22 Breakfast with Mr. John Sanders then went west a few miles when we stoped to rest awhile, at a Mr. [?] Johnsons its being [about the warmest day weve had this year. Had dinner with Mr. Johnson. Wrote some letters this afternoon then we tried to get a place to sop all night which we succeeded in in the 7th place with a Mr. Wm. Buckley where we had supper. 6 miles. Monday, June 23d Breakfast with Mr. Buckley then saw the directors of school house in Houstonville and got permission to hold a meeting. Had no dinner after asking at four houses. Went to [?] to post our letter then returned to Houstonville and gave notice of our meeting. Had supper with Mr. Buckley. Good attendance at meeting and at close stoped with Mr. Buckley all night. 13 mi. Tuesday, June 24 Breakfast with Mr. Buckley and then went west to the first [Page 72, fd 1, item 78] school house, tried to see the directors but could not find two of, it then being late and very muddy from the rain to day and yesterday and still looking like more rain soon we applied for lodging and stoped with Mr. Jones and had supper. 11 miles. Dinner with Mr. Robert Brown Wednesday, June 25 After breakfast with Mr. Jones we applied for two school houses during the day and more refused and a third could not find any of the directors at home. No dinner. After asking at six places stoped all night with John Myers and had supper. 11 miles. Thursday, June 26 Breakfast with Mr. Myers then applied for two school houses [Page 73, fd 1, item 79] and were refused. Ate dinner with Mr. Larkin one of the school directors at Foosland, said he would grant us the house but had refused other the use of ti and couldnt consistently grant it to us. We then went south two miles and succeeded in getting the school house. Made an appointment and held meeting with a fair size audience. At close made appointment for another tomorrow night. Were invited home by Mr. J.A. Smith, had some supper. 19 miles. Friday, June 27 Breakfast with J.A. Smith then hoed some garden for him after which I wrote a letter to father and then we had dinner. After dinner we applied for another school house but were refused then for [Page 74, fd 1, item 80] another but failed to see all the directors. Returned to the school house and filled our appointment made last night. At the close of meeting Mr. Kirks, one of the directors gave me a dollar to pay for lodging telling us he had not room to keep us but there was an hotel in the small tow of Howard 1 miles west so we went to the hotel. No supper. 12 miles.

Saturday, June 28th Breakfast at the hotel, its taking just our dollar for bed and breakfast. Gave the proprietor a tract, telling him who we were and how we traveled when he invited us to call again. We then applied for two school houses, one being at Fisher and were refused also a church at Fisher. At the third place of asking got dinner at Mr. Coovest [?]. We then went to Houstonville [Page 75, fd 1, item 81] and stoped all night at Mr. Wm. Buckley. 12 miles. 3 meetings. Sunday, June 29th Breakfast with Mr. Buckley then called on Mr. Warner one of the school directors got permission to preach this evening and gave notice through the neighborhood. Had dinner with Mr. Lindsey and supper with Mr. Buckley. At close of meeting made an appointment to preach in the Dobson school house, tomorrow night. Stoped all night with Wm. Buckley again. 6 miles. Monday, June 30th Helped Mr. Wm. Buckley hoe corn during the forenoon and had breakfast and dinner with him. Mrs. Buckley washed our clothes for us today. Went to Fisher in the afternoon posted my letters [Page 76, fd 1, item 82] and gave notice of our meeting then went to the school house and remained till meeting when a few gentleman came and I got into conversation with them till the time passed away without any meeting. No one inviting us home returned to Mr. Brickley with his boy. 9 miles. Tuesday July 1st After breakfast with Mr. Brickley I hoed corn a little while Br Bean took the school house key to the director. At his return we started east calling on Mr. Simeon Davis a director of the school who invited us to dinner and gave permission to hold meeting. After dinner we made known our appointment through the neighborhood then returned to Mr. Davis had supper. We [Page 77, fd 1, item 83] then went and filled our appointment and while I was speaking received several eggs in my face thrown through the window by some person. At the close of meeting Mr. Davis took us home and we stoped all night with him. 12 miles. Wednesday, July 2 Remained at Mr. Simeon Davis till after dinner cleaning up my clothes after the little episode of last evening. In the afternoon went to dewey where we received quite a number of letters then went east to the first school got permission to preach and held a meeting at the close of which Mr. [?]berry. No supper 12 miles. Thursday, July 3 After breakfast with Mr. [?] [Page 78, fd 1, item 84] berry. We started east trying to obtain a house to hold meeting in but failed, applying for these during the day. Had no dinner after asking at four houses, but got to stop all night with a Mr. Frank Morris his being the fourth place we asked. Had supper with him and talked till nearly twelve oclock before going to bed. 15 mi.

Friday, July 4th Up at quarter past three oclock this morning and had breakfast, as Mr. Morris was going to attend the celebration at Paxton. Had some breakfast then started east and passing through Penfield, Armstrong and Potomac. Had dinner at Mr. Gables. After asking [Page 79, fd 1, item 79] five times for lodging we arrived at Mr. Jas. M. Dunn where we got a lunch and remained all night. 24 miles. Saturday, July 5th One of the most severe storms passed of last night. Ive experienced rain passing continuously lightning and wind blowing like a hurricane. After breakfast with Mr. Dunn we went to Johnsoville, Ind. Arriving at Bro. Geo. W. Johnsons about 1.30 P.M. had dinner and supper with him and remained all night. 15 miles. 7 meetings. Sunday July 6th Held meeting at eleven oclock this morning and 7.30 oclock this evening. In the afternoon wrote some letters. Had breakfast and dinner at Geo. W. Jonsons and supper at [Page 80, fd 1, item 86] Wm. Newels where we remained all night. 2 miles.
