CONDITION MONITORING OF GRINDING PROCESS WITH RESPECT TO WHEEL LOADING AND WHEEL DRESSING THROUGH MACHINE VISION SYSTEM
vi
This study aims at developing a non-contact method for measuring the grinding wheel loading and wheel dressing and thereby determining the optimum dressing intervals. With the aid of a machine vision system, a systematic process for measuring the wheel loading and wheel dressing was developed. The images of the grinding wheel were taken using a Veho Usb Microscope with a magnification of 25X. These images were transferred to the computer and are processed for determining the percentage of loading. The image toolbox of MATLAB was used for image processing. Global Thresholding technique has been used to differentiate the loaded region of the wheel from rest of the background. Since most of the industrial applications are concerned majorly with surface finish, time to redress the wheel depends upon the required surface finish of the machined component. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was developed in order to monitor the surface roughness. The developed ANN model predicts the surface roughness corresponding to a particular percentage of wheel loading. A programme was developed on Matlab for the online
monitoring of Wheel Loading and Wheel Dressing. This programme automates the image capturing and analysing process, thereby making the whole machine vision system applicable for online monitoring purpose. Experiment was conducted on HCHCR to verify the
developed programme. Experimental results show the suitability of using machine vision system for the online monitoring of the grinding wheel loading and dressing, when ANN model is combined with the programme or when the programme alone is used in isolation. On the contrary to it ANN model when implemented in isolation is suitable only for offline monitoring. Implementation of this system is suitable in Mass Production, which will result in improvements in Time, Cost and Quality resulting in better productivity.
