But the don't have the basic equipment, the rifles are not there and other equipment for public order. They don't even have a single shield. STORY: The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) formally closed a two week specialized top-up training course for the Somali Police Force (SPF) in Public Order Management at General Kahiye Academy in the countrys capital Mogadishu. The 1071 men and women of the SPF successfully finished the course which was conducted by AMISOM Police Trainers. The training included Rescue Operations and dealing with kidnappings, VIP protection exercise, riot and crowd control, handcuffing and the use of tear gas. The acquired training will help fill a key gap in the Somali Police Force capabilities, after years of civil war and armed conflict, while at the same time increase the SPFs ability to enforce the rule of law and protect the communities they serve. General Ahmed Dayil Ahmed, the commander of the General Kahiye Police Academy, had this to say on the training exercise. As you can see here the special detachment of police of Federal Republic of Somalia arranged to take part in the stabilization process of Mogadishu city; this is the first batch who complete their training successfully.

AMISOMs police unit is tasked with providing training to the Somali Police Force as the country embarks on reforming its security sector that was torn apart during the civil war. Although Somalias police has seen an increase in the number of personnel, the police force lacks equipment and resource to move out to the various liberated areas that requires their services in maintaining law and order. The important thing is not the training for the Somali Police, the important thing is equipment. We have over one thousand people here, and i can tell you there ready to go out and keep order in Mogadishu and other places. says Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, AMISOM Police Head of Training But the don't have the basic equipment, the rifles are not there and other equipment for public order. They don't even have a single shield. Batons and other things are not there, and so maybe this is the right time for the international community to come to their aid providing them with the basic equipment, to be able to move out. Because their continued stay here does not help. AMISOM Police Training Unit is set to deliver further specialist training in community based policing, gender and sexual based violence, childrens right and protection as well as Train the Trainers course that will enable the Somali Police to deliver their own training.
