Student Government Day

Streamwood High School seniors took over the town on May 1 for Student Government Day. Students worked together with Village Board and staff to get a hands-on view of local government, and held a mock Village Board meeting.

Message From The Village President

The end of the school year always gives me an opportunity to reflect on the young people in our community. If what Ive seen is any indication, our future is in good hands! Over ninety Streamwood High School (SHS) seniors took over the Village, Township and Park District. Students reviewed topics as diverse as video gaming, purchasing policies, and senior housing. Everyone was impressed as the students researched President Roth with Student Government Day President Rachel Berggren the topics, discussed their benefits, and voted on issues looking at whats in the best interest of our Village. We want to thank Mr. Marroquin and the entire Civics Department for their assistance and support of this great hands-on program. We were pleased to honor the SHS 2013 DECA and HOSA competition teams. Certificates were presented to students who received top honors in state and international events at our May 23 Board meeting. In competition, these students had to craft business plans for international corporations, create marketing materials for local entrepreneurs, and compete in stiff, lightning-round questioning to win. SHS students swept a number of the competition categories. The Village was also delighted to present four SHS students with its Village Board Art Purchase Award. This years winners are Saharai Malagon, Tommy Blasco, Brianna Keller, and Briana Galindo. Be sure to take a look at the incredible talent of these and past winners on your next trip to Village Hall. At the May 23 Village Board meeting, the Village Board also recognized this years DARE graduates. The Village of Streamwood offers Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) programming as a key component in our crime prevention and community policing initiatives. It educates our youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, and provides our children with the skills they need to make good choices throughout their lives. At our May DARE graduations, I was again impressed with the heartfelt essays the students wrote, and the powerful messages they return to us about what they have learned. Congratulations to all of our students! On behalf of the Village Board, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Veterans Memorial Commission, including Lisa Poturalski, Steve Wilson, Michael Unthank, Kathryn Serbin, Richard Winterfeld, Jim Sobeski and Bill Lunsford. We also appreciate the assistance of numerous volunteers, for their tireless efforts and ongoing dedication in making our Memorial Day Observance unforgettable. With school officially over and Memorial Day in the past, we are ready to focus on summer. Summer is the perfect time to get out of the house, enjoy the weather and visit with your neighbors and friends. Be sure to join us at Dolphin Park for our annual fireworks display on Thursday, July 4 at 9:15 pm. Summer in Streamwood would not be complete without Summer Celebration! Come and experience the Best of Broadway from the Streamwood Park District Arts Academy, while enjoying great food, good friends and lively entertainment. The fun begins on Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28. Please consider volunteering at the festival! Contact us at (630) 736-3800 or by email at mayor@streamwood.org.

DARE Graduations
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is an important part of our Police Departments community-based policing. Officers work with kids to educate them about avoiding peer pressure and drug use, and learning to make better choices. In May, students at Hanover-Countryside, Heritage, Hilltop and Parkwood schools completed their DARE instructions. President Roth, members of the Village Board, and Police Department personnel were on hand to present the graduates with certificates of completion. Congratulations DARE graduates!

DECA-HOSA Recognitions
The Village Board recognized a number of outstanding Streamwood High School students, who won in state and international DECA and HOSA competitions. HOSA and DECA are co-curricular organizations dedicated to further student education in health occupations, marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. Congratulations!

Summer Fun and Safety

Fireworks, barbecues, family, and friends are great combinations for summer fun. Look out for hidden danger. Keep children and animals away from grills and fire pits. Never set off fireworks or use sparklers. Sparkler injuries account for almost 20% of all firework injuries. Use glow sticks instead to keep your family safe.

Early Warning Systems Save Lives

There are two different outdoor warning systems. The Village operates the outdoor emergency warning system, designed to give advanced warning in case of an imminent threat due to attack or severe weather. The sustained blare of this warning siren can be heard on the first Tuesday of every month at 10:00 am. If you hear this siren at any other time, take cover immediately and utilize the Emergency Broadcast System on local TV or radio stations. The Park District operates a lightning prediction system, which is activated when conditions are likely to produce lightning strikes. These sirens have a different sound: three, 15-second horn blasts. If activated, go indoors until an all-clear" siren (three, 5-second blasts) is heard. Sirens are located at Park Place, Hoosier Grove, Rahlfs Woods, and Sunny Hill. The District test their system every other Tuesday. For details on the emergency warning system, call the Police Department at (630) 736-3700. For more on the lightning prediction system, call the Park District at (630) 372-PARK.
