Summer in Florida is HOT! It can be a dangerous time for people exposed to the extreme heat. Heat exhaustion is one problem to watch out for. Our bodies stay cool when sweat evaporates. On hot, humid days, the evaporation of sweat is slowed by the increased moisture in the air. When sweating isn't enough to cool your body, your temperature rises, and you may become ill. Symptoms can include weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache & increased heart rate. If you are experiencing heat exhaustion, get out of the heat quickly and into the AC or at least a cool, shady spot. Take off tight or unnecessary clothing, drink plenty of water, take a cool shower or apply cool water to your skin. If you do not feel better within 30 minutes, contact a health professional. If heat exhaustion is not treated, it can progress to heatstroke, a potentially deadly illness.
Watermark University
In 1867 US Secretary of State William H. Seward offered Russia $7,200,000, or two cents per acre, for Alaska. Alaska officially became the 49th state on January 3, 1959. It accounts for 25% of the oil produced in the US. Rhode Island could fit into Alaska 425 times. Most of America's salmon, crab, halibut, and herring come from Alaska. 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the US are located in Alaska. On July 17th at 2:00 p.m. come hear our H.R. director, Rhon, discuss these and many more interesting facts about this beautiful state that she called home. Watermark University Faculty & Volunteer Opportunities: Residents & Families are encouraged to share their passion through teaching a Watermark University Course during the Summer semester. Call ext. 4107.
Thriving
The 2013 Expressions Resident Art Show was another great success. With thirteen artists entering forty-seven pieces of art it was our highest level of participation yet. The creativity was astounding. Even the judges from The Museum of Fine Arts were impressed with the unusual mediums used to create these beautiful pieces. From bird feathers collected from our pond, to lipstick, to millions of beads, porcelain and one-of-a-kind seashells choosing the top works of art was no easy task. Five ribbons were awarded. The top three selected were from Marge Haske, Edna Rosenberg and Grace Lingaard. Honorable mention was awarded to June Bailey and Evelyn Whitney. Every piece of art entered in our show will be submitted along with art from the other thirty-two Watermark communities to be considered for the 2014 Expressions calendar. We hope to see some of our thriving resident artists featured next year. They certainly deserve it!
