The new collection represents the culmination of many years of research – not only into new designs
and fabrics – but also into the UV risks that represent one of less well-known hazards for golfers.
Today, skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK, with over 100,000 cases every year.
And research has shown that male golfers remain one of the demographic groups most at risk.
Working in partnership with leading skin experts, including the skin cancer screening specialists,
Screen4Life, and the British Skin Foundation, we have developed our UV collection to better protect
golfers from the risks of over-exposure to the sun.

THE SUNDERLAND UV COLLECTION
The Sunderland UV collection comprises
short sleeved poloshirts in eight colours,
long sleeved poloshirts in four colours and
trousers in two colours – all of which feature
the revolutionary Cocona™ fabric.
Made utilising natural technology derived from coconut shells, the Cocona™ fabric can provide up to
50 ultraviolet protection factor, depending on colour and construction. With activated carbon embedded
in its yarns and fibres, Cocona™ fabric absorbs harmful UVA and UVB radiation. And because it is not
a chemical treatment applied to the fabric, there are no negative effects on the skin to worry about.
Alongside these core products, the new Sunderland UV collection also includes convertible windshirts
and windvests, both available in four colours, that have been manufactured using Kolon’s high density
X20 fabric which also provides excellent natural UV protection.
Indeed, by working with skin experts and fabric manufacturers, Sunderland has developed a complete
range of clothing designed to keep golfers safe and comfortable in the sun.
COCONA™
Energy efficient fabrics™
The UV collection features the revolutionary Cocona™ fabric which is
made utilising natural technology derived from coconut shells.
Cocona™ technology is contained inside the yarn fibre, so unlike
chemical treatments it will not wear out or wash off. In fact, Cocona™
fabrics and yarns are refreshed with the heat from washing and drying.

Cocona™ products provide natural protection from UVA and UVB

radiation. Activated carbon embedded within the yarns and fibres
absorbs the harmful rays and provides a shield between the skin and
damaging UV radiation.

Cocona™ products also rapidly pull moisture away from the skin and

spread it across the fabric surface. This helps to increase the
evaporation rate and speeds up drying time. In addition, the activated
carbon absorbs odour molecules, that are subsequently released during
washing and drying.

Sunderland has developed its UV collection
while working in close partnership with skin
cancer screening specialist, Screen4Life.
Screen4Life is dedicated to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer. Through its pioneering
distribution and partnership strategy, Screen4Life works with some of Europe’s best known brands
– taking its skin cancer screening beyond hospitals and clinics and out into the workplace and
leisure facilities.
Today, skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK, with over 100,000 cases every year,
a figure that is forecast to double in the next ten to 20 years. There are two main groups of skin
cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is the least common skin cancer but it
is potentially the most serious: there are over 9,500 new cases each year in the UK and 1,800 deaths.
More people now die of melanoma in the UK than in Australia. It is the second most common cancer in
the young population (20 – 39 age group). It is estimated that approximately 85% of cases are caused
by too much sun.
By working with leading skin and screening experts, such as Screen4Life and researchers from the
Heriot-Watt University, Sunderland has developed its UV range to better protect and educate golfers to
the risks of over-exposure to the sun.
