he addressed it "to them that are called, beloved in God, the Father, and kept for
Jesus Christ" (v.l).
You no doubt recall Jesus' word in John

in that because faith alone dies, a man is justified by works and not by faith only (2:24)it takes faith that works to stay in the family of God. Saving faith is not, therefore, merely a climatic thing .that breaks forth once in the lifetime, then and there guaranteeing a man against himself in such a manner
that no matter what he becomes or comes

to believe or disbelieve, God will save him.

Just as "he that cometh to God must be lieve that He is and that He is a rewarder

as the Good Shepherd, spoke if the sheep of His Flock, when He said: "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my
Father's hand" (John 10:28, 29).
No one who believes the Lord would ever doubt that the believer is sure of his sal

faith in that Son, Jesus Christ, there is no promise of eternal life (Acts 16:30-34).
Since, then, faith does not exist without

expressing itself in our action (according

to the Spirit's word through James), and

since it is impossible to please God with out faith, it is therefore impossible to live our lives without demonstrating in our ac tions our living faith in Christ. It is exact ly as Jesus said: "If a man keep my word, he shall never see death" (John 8:51). "Without me," says the Lord, "ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). This was spoken to His disciples. And the entire marvelous exposition of faith, found in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews, was written in con nection with emphasizing to pardoned be

to accept the gift. It is frequently said by those who believe that once one is in grace, he is always and irrevocably in grace, that if a man can lose eternal life, the life would not be eternal, but would of necessity be of time and not of eternity. The fault with this reasoning is that it is
not founded on the Word of God. The di
lemma is non-existent when we remem ber that the "eternal life" of which Jesus

believer is secure. The question is: who

is a believer? Is he the man of whom Jesus

speaks in Luke 8:13, who received the Word with joy, who believes for a while

speaks as belonging to those saved by grace is not mere everlasting existence. Every human being will exist forever,
either in unending torment (Matthew 25:-

the quality and not the duration of "etern

No one who believes the Lord thinks that the believer is insecure. But careful and

Furthermore, it is Christ who is our life (Colossians 3:4). John says, "we have seen it, and bear witness and show unto

It is faith that distinguishes the believer from the non-believer, and if that faith dies, there is no difference between them:
the believer becomes a non-believer. Does someone say that the man of faith is not

In fact, this is why James explains that believers either live like people of faith or they are as dead spiritually as the body is

The conclusion is unavoidable: deny Christ, who is our life, and we have denied our selves the privilege of eternal life. "K we deny Him He will deny us!" (2 Timothy 2:12). "Whoever disowns the Son, the same

HERALDED BY ANGELS PROCLAIMED BY SHEPHERDS

How fitting that the angels came

First, to the shepherds on Bethlehem's plain, To tell them the good Shepherd, had come
David revealed, in the shepherd's psalm. To give His life to save lost sheep To seek for them o'er mountains steep
Lovingly take them in His arms And carry them safe from all that harms.

As angel voices echoed away

They stood in awe by the bed of hay

They saw the Clirist that angels said They would find in this lowly bed.
So wonderful it seemed to them They must tell the news to all men

Going home, they shouted the cry "Christ is come" let no man deny. They told the news, to God glorify Praising, His name to magnify
They published abroad, as they went
The story of love from heaven sent.

The Scriptures told, and they had heard That men would call this Shepherd, Lord; He'd restore the faint; the hungry feed

By waters, still, he would safely lead.

In death's valley they need not fear
For He would be forever near

Arriving then back to their sheep Wondrous thoughts in their hearts to keep
And tell the good news far and wide
Of Him who came with them to abide.

One would walk through; but not alone

This Shepherd would for their sins atone. Knowing this, they gladly hastened

The Lord is my Shepherd, they'd oft repeat As with rod and staff they tended their sheep
Knowing when Earth's ties they'd sever They would dwell in the house of the Lordforever.

With joyful hearts, but spirits chastened

To see this, that had been fulfilled Prophets foretold and Heaven willed.
