    Optimism is good business


    Contrary to popular belief among those in the Media and News Industry, bad news does not necessarily spread as well as good. Something can spread, but it does not mean that what is spread will really pay off in the long run. The News is dominated by stories presented with a negative spin. A news Journalist by the name of Catherine Gyldensted did a study, with six variations of a real life story. She wrote a mix of negative and positive approaches to an originally negative story. Some of which, were more extremely positive and others leaning more towards negativity. She found that after showing the original negative news story to 710 people were left in a bad mood; they became disengaged and didnt want to read any more. Not much of a surprise there, but she also found that the more positive stories gave a more realistic picture of the reported story.

    Life is not all doom and gloom, neither is it all sunshine and lollipops, but being optimistic about things without leaving out the facts is more believable. Think about some of the most thriving businesses in a difficult economy, like Coaching and Consulting, are involved in positive psychology. It is only deceptive to believe that you will last long, during such a time, where people need hope, selling negativity. Obama came and gave people a sense of hope, at a time where trust has fallen for Authoritative figures among the public. He rallied nations behind his empowering, yet simple message of yes we can. If you are in Business, you are in the people Business. People have fears, hopes, dreams, worries and pains. As a solution provider you are selling your good news, this product will help you with this or this service will relief you of that. The people Business is about having empathy for those you are seeking to reach, and bettering their lives.
