This year, the University of Baguio (UB) has all the reasons to celebrate as it marks its more than six decades of shaping and inspiring generations of minds. Seeds In 1948, when the Philippines was reeling from the ruins of the World War II, a couple trying to devise a way to help the country get back to its feet thought offering technical courses was one way to best equip the people with know-how, helping rebuild the nation. And so, with searing passion and a deep sense of vision, they opened a five-room structure along Session Road. They called it the Baguio Technical and Commercial Institute. Dr. Fernando Tatay Gonzaga Bautista and his wife Ms. Rosa Nanay Castillo-Bautista opened the Baguio Tech with vocational courses automotive mechanics, radio telegraphy, horology, typing, stenography, and bookkeeping accommodating 89 students and employing five fulltime teachers. Since then, Baguio Tech has steadily expanded its academic portfolio, offering tertiary education in 1950. Nineteen years later, it received the university status and became the University of Baguio. Today, UB which has expanded to over 15,000 and growing consists of 11 schools in the tertiary level, the UB Laboratory Elementary School, UB High School, and the UB Science High School. Visionaries UB is currently led by a group of dynamic administrators: President Johann Ben Bautista, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rebecca Miranda, Vice President for Administration and Research Dr. Lloyd Ordua, Vice President for Finance Ms. Eleonor Rosa Bautista-Razon, and Vice-President for Institutional Development Dr. Miller Peckley. UB the first non-sectarian autonomous university in the Cordillera seals its reputation as one of the countrys most accomplished academic institutions, being the only higher education institution with the highest number of PACUCOA-accredited programs in the country. At the forefront are the Universitys 11 schools who continue to list impressive ratings in board examinations. Just this year, the UB School of Natural Sciences and the School of Teacher Education have produced some of the countrys best medical technologists and teachers yet again, recording a remarkable 100% passing rate among first-takers in the March 2013 licensure examination for medical technologists and teachers, respectively. The UB School of School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety also clutched a striking 100% passing rate in the April 2013 Licensure Examination for Criminologists. Magnified by the roster of topnotchers produced from year to year, commitment to academic excellence is at the heart of the UBian education. Recently, UB alumnus Tom Braian Aguilar placed third in the nationwide ranking in the May 2013 Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination. Likewise, Leah Moyao landed at the sixth spot in the April 2013 Licensure Examination for Criminologists. Also, Sheena Torren Merino took the March 2013 Licensure Examination for Teachers to finish at the seventh place. Moreover, UB is on the roll in making waves in accounting as it finished as champion in the 2013 National Convention of the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute Accounting Quiz. The UBian spirit also stands out in sports, local and international alike. During this years season of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League, UB championed the taekwondo, basketball, athletics, arnis, swimming, lawn tennis (women), badminton (men), and table tennis (men) events. The University also snagged the championship trophies (elementary and secondary divisions) at the National CPJ Kyorugi and Poomsae Taekwondo Championships and at the Palarong Pambansa. In addition, UB snared the crown for senior men at the 2013 Private Schools Athletic Association National Games. Also, chess wizard Haridas Pascua of the UB School of Information Technology raked in five gold medals including one silver during the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship in Thailand. Global linkages Constantly boosting its educational services, the University is sustaining its linkages with some of the worlds major industry brands. It has tied up with the Germany-based SAP Business One for its accounting systems as well as with the American multinational corporation CISCO for its computer laboratories. UB is also an accredited testing center for Pearson VUE, an electronic testing company headquartered in London, UK.

Furthermore, UB is presently connected with the internationally recognized College of Asian Scholars and Rajabhat Maha sarakham University, both Thailand-based. The UB School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM) also continues to link with A-list hotels and resorts such as the prominent Riverview Hotel and Hotel Royal in Singapore as well as the country's posh Shangri-La, Crown Regency Hotel, and Fairways & Blue Water Resort for its students' world-class training. It has conquered the global arena, tying up with the Nagasaki Wesleyan University in Japan; Omni Hotel, Port Royal, and the Wintergreen Resorts in the US; and the Sprott-Shaw Community College in Canada, among others. Trendy One of its recognizable marks, UB prides itself on housing only the most up-to-date and stylish facilities and equipment. The UB Clinical Laboratory, an accredited tertiary and training laboratory by the Department of Health and the Commission on Higher Education, offers accurate and affordable clinical laboratory tests. Also, the School of IHTM is equipped with modern bars Caf Fernando and Sazerac Bar and three fully furnished suites, among others. Likewise, the Olympic-sized swimming pool makes it even more exciting to bask around the campus, along with the multiple food courts, immense libraries, cutting-edge computer laboratories, vending machines, and mini-groceries. Top it all off with the 24-hour automated teller machines and security systems. Giving back Alongside incessantly honing and training young minds, UB has been tirelessly giving back to the community from conducting free and regular public lectures to assisting in government programs and facilitating trainings both for government and private groups and organizations. UB also conducts regular medical and dental missions, tree-planting activities, gift-giving activities, and other free outreach services for its adopted barangays and schools. Tatay and Nanays vision of advancing the country through effectively educating the youth has held on for 65 unyielding years enabling the institution to mold leaders and trailblazers and eclipse its own laurels decade after decade.
