A few decades ago, good educational institutions were clustered in only two
urban centers - Manila in Northern Philippines and Cebu in Central Philippines.
Economic and cultural activities, likewise, followed the same patterns. Thus, to
encourage growth and development in other areas, the government embarked on a
"dispersal" program. A wide ranging incentive was offered to lure and spur industries to
relocate and/or establish new ones on other parts of the country.
Thus, in 1975, a group of five (5) physicians who where then operating a tertiary
level hospital and sensing the need of a paramedical educational institution in the locality,
decided to establish what was then known as  "Iligan School of Nursing and Midwifery."
Pioneering enrolment were only 37 students taking up Nursing and Midwifery - its only
two course offerings.

To date, there are 32 approved course offerings clustered into (8) eight
departments. However, only 23 have enrollees and Nursing is its banner course for
consistently for more than half of its total enrolment.

From its humble beginnings, the college has metamorphosed into a multi-faceted
educational institution. From initially offering only paramedical courses it has ventured
into non-paramedical courses. The College now offers Computer related courses,
Hospitality Courses under its Hotel and Restaurant Management-Tourism department,
Criminology, Education, Commerce, etc.

Along the years, it has produced excellent graduates who have topped various
government Licensure Examinations particularly in Nursing, Midwifery, Radiologic
Technology, Criminology, etc. A few years ago, the college was adjudged as the "best
school for Radiologic Technology" for that year.

Our graduates have found employment overseas - proof that our training are at par
with global standards.

In its quest for academic excellence, the college was granted an initial Level 1
accreditation for Nursing, Education and Commerce courses in the year 2003 by the
Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities-Commission on Accreditation
(PACUCOA). Thus, our college holds the distinct honor of being "the first PACUCOA
Accredited School in Iligan."

Such accreditation was upgraded to level II in year 2006 for the College of
Nursing and Commerce.

Other course offerings are being currently assessed for accreditation particularly the
College of Radiologic Technology, Criminology and Hotel and Restaurant Management-
Tourism.
Iligan Medical Center College believes in quality education that empowers
graduates to become holistic and productive citizens of the country by honing their skills
and building positive attitudes and values for peace, cultural growth and sustainable
economic development.

Organizing the core elements of my professional life as an educator into a single
comprehensive document, structured as a professional portfolio, has truly been a growth
experience for me. All of the thoughts, ideas, passions, and perspectives were in my head
somewhere, but it was both challenging and rewarding to examine them in depth and
state them in so many words. In referring graduate students to my portfolio as a reference
and example, I realized that it was sorely in need of an update. Every element of the
portfolio has been updated, and the structure has been streamlined and improved. Like
the original creation of the portfolio, this revision process has been challenging and
rewarding, as I have taken another reflective look at my studies and achievement. I did
decide to keep the same pictures.

The creation of this portfolio has been an important part of discovering,
implementing, and evaluating new study tools in the classroom. I have seen a dramatic
increase in the motivation, cooperation, and reflection skills of the students through the
implementation of new ideas. In order to do so, I challenged myself to step away from the
routine, away from the mundane, and to embrace new instruction and assessment
strategies whole-heartedly. While this was sometimes uncomfortable, it allowed me the
opportunity to grow in ways I had not thought possible prior to creating this portfolio.
The portfolio itself was not the means of this transformation, simply a catalyst and
reflection of the process. One of the most important aspects of the portfolio creation
process was the emphasis on personal reflection. As I prepared each artifact for inclusion
in the portfolio, I reflected on the process of implementation as well as the effect the
artifact had on my study and professional development. In a broader sense, I reflected on
the past, present, and future status of my career as an educator as I put together a new
résumé, classroom observation of mind and learning, and developed my skills for both
student and professional development. While this reflection was a requirement of the
Field Study 3 & 4, I saw the value of the process as I worked through the past year. My
greatest inspiration for continued reflection was from my experience: as I observed their
increased enthusiasm and awareness of my own learning, I was inspired to personally
develop a more reflective view of my study and professional development.

In the future, I will continue to develop this portfolio as a living document.
Having seen the value of reflective analysis, I will continue to regularly and rigorously
evaluate my own skills and professional development. I will also regularly revisit my
professional dreams and evaluate my progress toward sharing of knowledge. I would also
like to include a multimedia section in this portfolio, incorporating audio and video clips
of my observation and of my good performances. Throughout the portfolio development
and revision process, I have grown as an educator and as a observant. I hope to continue
this growth, and this portfolio will be a helpful tool in demonstrating and evaluating my
continued professional development.
