UB scores another win in National Food Showdown Fresh from its championship in Luzon's Hotel and Tourism Weekend,

the University of Baguio was in excellent fighting form once again as it battled against the culinary industry's best in the 5th Annual National Food Showdown (NFS) in Manila. The UB team, composed of School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management students Sweet Eulynette Chumawar, Robenson Dasalla, and Don Paule, brought home the bronze award in the Modern Filipino Kulinarya category of the competition's main event, the Battle Royale: Chef Wars competition. Chumawar, Dasalla, and Paule won the gold in the same category during the recent HRT Weekend. Luzon's official representative under the category, UB competed with the National Capital Region's International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (gold medal), Visayas' La Consolacion College-Bacolod (silver medal), and Mindanao's Liceo de Cagayan University (diploma) on September 18 at the World Trade Center's Kitchen Stadium. Each of the schools underwent elimination rounds in their respective regional food showdowns the HRT Weekend for Luzon, the Sabor Bisaya for Visayas, and the Kumbira for Mindanao. The UB team, under the tutelage of UB's Resident Chef Maricris Agas, prepared traditional Filipino dishes served in a gourmet fashion, namely Ensaladang Gulay sa Alamang Dressing na sinamahan ng Crispy Pla-Pla, Pinakbet sa Alamang at Hipon na sinamahan ng Nilatikang Kanin, and Pinalutong na Binagoongang Kasim na pinasarap sa Gata at Nilatikang Kanin. Also competing under the student division was UB student Clifton Gacay, who meanwhile brought home a silver medal from the Halloween-themed Fruit and Vegetable Carving category under The Compleat Chef: The Filipino Carver competition. Gacay won a bronze in the Ice Carving Free Style individual category and a silver medal in the Ice Carving group category during the HRT Weekend.
