he Estes Park Walk for the hungry will be Sunday, September 15. Participants will walk around Lake Estes, starting at 2 p.m. from the south side of the Estes Park Visitors Center. CROP Walks are sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), an ecumenical organization supported by several church denominations. Walkers solicit donations from friends and relatives to support them in the walk, and donations may be directed not only to Church World Service/CROP, but also to several other non-profit relief organizations such as Lutheran World Relief, Baptist World Aid/Baptist World Alliance and the National Association of Evangelicals, as well as several others. Twenty-five percent of all walk receipts will go to Crossroads of Estes Park for local needs. Church World Service provides emergency disaster assistance, makes possible many self-help projects, and supports health, education and community programs. At present CWS is assisting thousands of refugees fleeing the war in Syria and helping people in many other parts of the world, including the victims of forest fires and floods here in the United States. Walkers can obtain sponsor sheets from the following churches: United Methodist of Estes Park, St. Bartholomew Episcopal, Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran, Mt. Calvary Lutheran, Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies and Pinewood Springs Presbyterian. Sponsor sheets are also available from walk coordinator, Peter Vanderveen at 586-0578.

what it is today. Pep Petrocine, among other things, built the downtown staple businesses Outdoor World and Rocky Mountain Connection. Few people know, as his ranger bio reflects, that he was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying 35 combat missions as a B-17 pilot in World War II. Of the new program, Claudine Perrault, library director, said, The Rangers of the Estes Valley program is so much more than a plaque that says Gift in Memory Of. This is an opportunity, consistent with our mission of literacy, to engage the public about the very fabric of our community, the people whose love and leadership, collectively, make us all that we are. We are so
pleased that Pep Petrocine is the first of the many who will be recognized. The Rangers program is a limited subscription program that will be closed when available shelves are named. Memorial and honor opportunities are available for gifts between $1,000 and $5,000. Proceeds of the program will be received and held by the Estes Valley Public Library Foundation in a fund restricted for planned renovation of the second floor of the library. Persons interested in further information on the Rangers of the Estes Valley program may contact Jerry Kennell, library development officer at (970) 5868116, ext. 835 or by email at jkennell@estesvalley library.org.

Cathcart-Rake is the author of a book of memoirs titled Sufficiently Robust; Fifty Years of Walking in Grand Canyon. Over the years, he has discovered that the Canyon has more to offer than just being a challenging place to hike it is also a sanctuary for reflection and renewal. He has frequently returned to the canyon because of the effect it has had on him, not simply because of what he could do in it. The canyon, he notes, has allowed him to discover his ability to persevere despite discomfort, affording an opportunity to learn more about the natural world and the solace of the great outdoors.
