As a teenager I worked for farmers baling hay. In those days balers did not produce the large round bales that are left in the field for later retrieval. Instead, they were pulled behind the tracker and spit out much smaller rectangular bales that needed to be stacked on a wagon pulled behind the baler. That was my job. In order to understand this jobs extreme difficulty you need to know that I grew up where the hills are steep and high. We didnt bale hay on a nice valley floor but on the side of a hill that looked like a ski jump run. Second, fields are not known to be as smooth as pavement. They are filled with holes and mounds made by weather and small rodents. Hay wagons wouldnt be caught dead using modern suspension systems, so every tiny bump and hole is magnified beyond bone rattling. Standing on a moving wagon in a bumpy field with nothing to hold on to requires some practice and a good sense of balance. Although the farmer did his best to avoid quick moves and abrupt turns, there were times when I lost my balance. A couple of times I literally fell off the wagon. Try throwing 80 pound bales above your head and stacking them even higher until you are riding on a moving mountain, and all the while it is 95 degrees with 95 percent humidity. Life can be like a moving wagon, where balance is hard to maintain, where the weight of life is a heavy burden and we sometimes fall. But when we stand on Gods firm foundation, our footing is stable and the chance of losing our balance is unlikely. Let us press on as committed believers trusting that God has given us the strength to meet all these days ahead with confidence and power. God bless your ministry, Pastor Mike

One evening while at the pool, I noticed that a rather large blackbird had fallen into the kiddie pool and was flapping wildly to get out. Several swimmers walked past, made comments, but no one did anything about it. I wasnt so keen on it either, thinking the bird might claw or peck me. So I waited to by see if anyone else would come to the birds rescue. Finally, I approached the edge of the kiddie pool and each time, the bird flapped away from me out into the middle, getting its feathers more and more water-logged. I figured it was a lost cause and went back to my chair. Then I heard no more flapping, and feared the worst. But the blackbird was floating out in the middle of the pool, exhausted. This time when I approached the edge, the bird actually flapped toward me and allowed me to rescue it. Im sure by now you have seen a parallel between this story and ours. Dont we all find ourselves in deep water at times, struggling to get out on our own? Doesnt pride kick into high gear as we refuse help from anyone? Isnt it only when weve exhausted ourselves that we allow God to rescue us? Sound familiar? I could name so many songs and hymns based on this very topic: leaning on our friends, or better yet, upon God, when things get tough. Who better to trust that the creator of the Universe to give us just what we need?!
