The Rose Family Story

Steve, Suzanne and their two children (Zac & Carleigh) were living a normal life in 2003. Both parents had successful careers, the children were happy and healthy, and savings for retirement and college were in place. But over the course of the year, Suzanne became mysteriously ill. Doctors were baffled as to what was wrong with her. She had to quit her job, and after Steve insisted, she made an appointment at Duke for a second opinion. She was diagnosed with stealth form of celiac disease, a severe allergy to wheat gluten. Armed with that knowledge and good care, her health began to improve. Suzanne was able to return to work in 2005 as a Marketing Director in an Assisted Living facility; a job she found to be very uplifting. Life appeared to be back on track until 2009, when she ended up in the hospital with a deadly staph infection in her leg. She was hospitalized for nearly two months, endured several surgeries, nearly lost her leg and almost lost her life. Miraculously, she was able to eventually walk out of the hospital; something her doctors had begun to doubt shed ever do. One month after being discharged, Suzanne was back in the hospital; this time with her son Zac, who had an emergency appendectomy just one week before his high school graduation. He recovered well from the surgery, and headed to college to play basketball four months later. But after only one month on campus, he collapsed in practice one day. A trip back to the hospital revealed a mass in his nasal cavity, which was removed and thankfully found to be benign. Three days before Christmas that same year, Steve suffered a heart attack in their living room while the family was all together. While still recovering in early 2010, Zac had to have surgery to repair a careerending shoulder injury. And four months after that, Steve suffered a second heart attack. As he recovered that summer, Zac prepared to transfer to another school, while Carleigh looked forward to starting her college education. The family was under a great deal of stress due to mounting medical bills, and Steve wasnt recovering from his second heart surgery as quickly as he had hoped. After only three weeks in school, Zac made the decision to put his college education on hold and move back home to help his parents out. He got a job at the same assisted living facility where his mother worked. Steve was able to start working full time again, and Carleigh had settled into college life. But then, a week before Christmas, the unthinkable happened... Suzanne was getting dressed for work, and noticed an unusually large mole in the center of her back. She wasted no time in calling her doctor, who agreed to see her that afternoon. He removed the mole that immediately and sent it off for biopsy. On January 6, 2011, Suzanne got the official diagnosis from her doctor: Malignant Melanoma. Surgery followed on Februrary 15th, leaving a scar over a foot long on her back, where additional tissue had to be removed. After a short recovery period, she returned to work and began investigating further treatment options, since her ongoing autoimmune issues posed a problem with conventional treatments. Keeping up with work and home life became increasingly difficult, and the medical bills continued to pour in. Carleigh also had to put her college education on hold and return home to work and help out. The family lost the home they had lived in for 10 years to foreclosure. Suzanne lost her job only two weeks afterwards. But the Rose family refused to give up. With crushing medical debt and continuing health challenges facing them, they were forced to accept assistance for the first time during their ordeal. By the end of 2011, Suzanne was feeling very ill, and in early 2012 another cancerous mole was found and removed. Steve was feeling the pressure of trying to keep his family together financially, and suffered a third heart attack this year. The family lost their health insurance in late 2012, and have since had a car repossessed. Just last month, Suzanne had yet another cancerous mole , and faces a third surgical procedure in the coming weeks. The Rose Family has taken one hit after another, yet their faith remains strong. Steve is doing all he can to support his family, but still needs help in order to get them back on their feet. Please help us help our friends.
