Understanding By Design Backwards Design Process (Developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, 2002)

Stage 1 Desired Results Content Standard(s): SSWH10 The student will analyze the impact of the age of discovery and expansion into the Americas, Africa, and Asia. a. Explain the roles of explorers and conquistadors; include Zheng He, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, James Cook, and Samuel de Champlain. b. Define the Columbian Exchange and its global economic and cultural impact. c. Explain the role of improved technology in European exploration; include the astrolabe. Understanding (s)/goals Essential Question(s): Students will understand that: What roles did the explorers Explorers from the 15th and and conquistadors play in the 16th centuries directly shaped Age of Discovery and our lives today, everything Expansion Westward (include from language to religion. Zheng He, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, James Cook, and Samuel de Champlain)? What was the Columbian Exchange and what impact did it have on culture and economy worldwide? How did improved technology accelerate European Exploration? What role did the astrolabe play in European Exploration? Student objectives (outcomes): Students will be able to: Recognize the achievements of famous explorers Relate ideas from exploration with ideas from the Renaissance Choose credible sources Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): Students will create an infographic about the age of exploration using credible sources. Stage 3 Learning Plan Day One o Introduce Essential Questions and Standards o Students will explore the media center o Students will view a digital story telling them all about the different features of the media center o Students will work in small groups to do a media scavenger hunt that will help them locate resources that they may use for their

infographic (Handout 1) Day Two o Directed by the media specialist, the students will explore credible sources o They will begin by watching a short video on credible sources from YouTube http://youtu.be/AFEwwG7rq0E o Then, we will discuss the importance of choosing credible sources using an infographic (this will introduce them to what they will later create) o Then, they will visit several links to websites in order to determine whether they find them credible and why Day Three o The media specialist will go through a short story about explorers called Into the Unknown: How Great Explorers Found Their Way By Land, Sea, and Air o We will discuss the different explorers and their contributions to our society o Then, the students will use Picktochart to create an infographic about the Age of Exploration which will be used a grade given by their teacher (Handout 2)

Media Center Scavenger Hunt 1. If you were trying to find a book on the life of Christopher Columbus, in which section of the media center would you look? 2. Find a fictional story on a famous explorer. What is the call number of this book? 3. If you were looking for the book Treasure Island, what section of the media center would you look? 4. If you wanted to know how many videos the media center has on exploration, which tool in the media center would you use to find this information? 5. In which section would you find a true story on the Middle Passage?

Requirements for Infographic Assignment 1. Be creative! 2. Include information on at least three famous explorers 3. Include the three reasons why the Europeans went exploring 4. Use credible sources and cite them on the bottom of this sheet 5. Include clip art or visuals
