Prepositions:OVERvs.ABOVE
NativespeakersofEnglishusuallyfinditverydifficulttoexplainthedifferencebetweentheprepositionsover andabove,butneverthelesshaveveryclearintuitionsaboutwheneachshouldbeused.Today'spostwillbe gettingintosomedetailaboutthefactorsdrivingtheseintuitions.Thesystemisquitebeautifulinitslogicand veryrevealingaboutsemanticstructure.

OVER Weneedtostartbyrecognisingthatoneofthemainusesofoveristoindicateapathofmotionabove(i.e., higherthan)something: Jilltravelledoverthehill.

Thepathdoesn'thavetobeoneofmotionitcanalsobealineofsight(amongotherthings): Empedocleslookedoverhisbackfence.
