Welcome.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Notre Dame College Prep. As you review the pages of this book, we hope you will come away with an appreciation for the unique place it is. When the governance of the school changed in 2007, the board and staff could have followed many paths in re-creating the institution founded more than a half-century earlier by the Holy Cross priests from Notre Dame, Indiana. They chose to re-dedicate the school to the patronage of Mary, Our Lady, and to follow her example of devotion to the formation and nurturing of young men. We have chosen to be an inclusive school, one that challenges and supports students with a wide range of academic achievement and abilities. We believe our Catholic faith demands nothing less. Each student is appreciated as an individual and his program is designed to help him reach his potential and exceed his expectations. We are proud that, regardless of their standing when they enter Notre Dame College Prep, our graduates leave well prepared for the rigors of higher education and, more importantly, for the moral challenges they will face in the years ahead. We celebrate and honor the families that entrust their sons to us. It is a matter of particular pride when students tell us Notre Dame has become a second home for them. We will work in partnership with you to help your sons become strong young men with a keen sense of their worth and their place in a global society. During my more than 50 years as a priest, I have worked to secure a safe, loving place for the children in my care. Today, I am proud to join the Board, faculty, and staff in inviting your family to become part of the Notre Dame tradition and to help write the future of this outstanding school. In Notre Dame,
President Father John P. Smyth A Chicago native, Father Smyth is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. After being named an All-American in basketball at the University of Notre Dame, Fr. Smyth was drafted by the St. Louis Hawks in the 1957 NBA Draft. Father instead chose to enter the seminary and upon graduation was assigned to head Maryville, a home for children that became a leading provider of services to youth, a position he held for more than 40 years. The Executive Board of Notre Dame College Prep appointed Father Smyth the schools first president under its new governance structure on March 1, 2007.
Be Faithful.
As part of our commitment to forming men of faith and service, students attend monthly Mass, study the Catholic faith in the classroom, experience the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation, make an annual retreat, and serve the local community. Our four-year retreat program is designed to help our students develop a mature faith that can augment a solid academic foundation with a real desire to deepen ones relationship with God. During Kairos, the culminating four-day faith experience for our senior Dons, young men discover how God is present and working in their lives, especially among family, friends, and others with whom they interact on a daily basis. They learn the importance of sharing their gifts with others and becoming leaders in their faith.
We are The Dons of Notre Dame! Taken from the Spanish word for gentleman, a Don of Notre Dame is a Gentleman of Mary. He is committed to faith, to scholarship, and to service. He is committed to personal excellence, to integrity, and to justice.
Be Yourself.
Mission
Under the patronage of Mary, Notre Dame College Prep is a secondary school committed to educating young men to be gentlemen of faith, scholarship, and service in an inclusive, family-oriented community. Faithful to the Roman Catholic tradition and inspired by Gospel values, we prepare students to be lifelong learners and to lead lives of integrity.
Ownership
Ownership of Notre Dame College Prep now rests in an independent Board comprised of Notre Dame alumni, parents, educators and Catholic leaders from the larger community of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Personal Growth
Each student is assigned a counselor who will work with him throughout his Notre Dame experience. Counselors support students by assisting them in managing a variety of development issues that arise during adolescence. Students enhance their self-understanding and learn effective problemsolving skills. We provide the following services: Academic Planning/Support, Personal/Social Support and Career Advising and College Counseling.
College Planning
The College and Career Center works with Notre Dame seniors on their transition to college. Counselors conduct senior and junior Insight Nights, NCAA Eligibility Center Presentations, and Financial Aid Nights for students and parents. Counselors also coordinate Notre Dame campus visits for a wide variety of college representatives and athletic coaches, process college and scholarship applications and write college recommendation letters.

Notre Dame has launched an innovative iPad program for students in 2013-2014.
