This year'sfood drive takes place this week, and Saturday is collection day. Throughout the week, volunteers deliverbags to individual homes with flyers asking for donations. On Saturday theyll return to pick up the donations and deliver them to local food banks. In Merritt last year, about 16 volunteers worked nearly 200 hours and collected approx. 1000 lbs of food for our food bank. This is the 3rd year for thisprovince-wide initiative. The Merritt Official Community Plan acknowledges that the TNRD has adopted a 1.8% projected growth rate for their official plans. To show some options, the Merritt OCP projected growth scenarios of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% over the next 15 years, which would result in a 2030 population of 8300, 9375, and 11,759 respectively (Merritt OCP, 2004). The community survey conducted as part of the Integrated Growth Strategy indicated that a significant portion of the community considered 15,000 inhabitants to be a good population base for Merritt in 2030. In order to achieve this population level by 2030, a growth rate in the order of 3.2% would be required. The Integrated Growth Strategy also states: According to the TNRD Regional Growth Strategy, 40,000 additional people will be added [to all of TNRD] by 2015. The TNRD projects the population of Merritt will reach 9,600 by that same date. That was in May 2010. However, the BC Census shows that in 2011, the city of Merritt had a population of 7,113, a 1.6% change from the 2006 census of 6,998 thats 115 new people over the 5 years, 23 per year. This summer, TNRD updated their Regional Growth Strategy, and it was presented to City Council during a regular meeting. Theyve revised their projected growth rate from 1.8% down to 0.8% per year over the next 25 years, according to the Merritt Herald dated July 11, 2013. Of course its impossible to really predict how many people will come here in the future. If we extrapolate from the recent past, there will only be 7,205 in 2015, and thats not even half of the 15,000 that participants in the Citys survey thought would be a good population base for Merritt in 2030! (Wed have to grow by 520 people per year from now on to reach that!) There is one possible game-changer in Merritts near future: the BC Hydro power upgrade which should be completed next year. In economic development circles, this is being touted as the thing that could change it all for us. And once theres enough hydro that will allow this community to grow, the ball will be in Ec Devs court to make it happen. KL
