Last week FBU firefighters struck to
defend pensions. CWU post workers started balloting on 27 September for national strikes over privatisation, pay, pensions and workload. Through the autumn, teachers in the NUT and NASUWT will strike together to defend education, while UCU lecturers are set to ballot for national strikes. Civil service workers in the PCS have been consulting on the next steps in their campaign of strikes against austerity. There has also been a number of local or sectonal strikes, such as the victorious battle by Hovis workers against Zero Hours contracts and use of agency to undermine pay and conditions.

Despite setbacks in the national coordinated action, we saw what our unions could do on 30 November 2011 when 2.6 million workers struck together to defend pensions. We want to see votes at the TUC supporting a general strike, and for a coordinated fightback across the unions, turned into action Unite the Resistance aims to bring together a network of activists from all unions to develop the kind of fightback necessary , through building solidarity with those fighting back now and getting organised at a rank and file level to pressure union leaders to call action that can win.
