Term 4

Week 1

Connect number names, numerals and quantities, including zero, initially up to 10 and then beyond (ACMNA002) Understanding that each object must be counted only once, that the arrangement of objects does not affect how many there are, and that the last number counted answers the how many question Using scenarios to help students recognise that other cultures count in a variety of ways, such as by placing one pebble in a bag to represent one object (for example to count the number of cattle) Subitise small collections of objects (ACMNA003) Using subitising as the basis for ordering and comparing collections of numbers Compare, order and make correspondences between collections, initially to 20, and explain reasoning (ACMNA289) Comparing and ordering items of like and unlike characteristics using the words more, less, same as and not the same as and giving reasons for these answers Understanding and using terms such as first and second to indicate ordinal position in a sequence Using objects which are personally and culturally relevant to students

Sort, describe and name familiar two dimensional shapes and three dimensional objects in the environment (ACMMG009) Sorting and describing squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, spheres and cubes

Writing numbers in maths books. Can use number lines to help. Before and after -Using number line, place frog on a number. Discuss the number before and where it is on the number line. Discuss the number after and where it is on the number line. -Place another frog; discuss the numbers that are between the two frogs and where they are on the number line. -Relate to counting. .

Whole class verbal counting to 100, using bead frame Mathletics Demonstrations MG Shape Sorting Shapes Students click the shapes which match the description, verbalising the shape and its features Nelson NTO 2D Shapes Make a Picture Discuss the different shapes used to make the picture. Discuss turning and resizing shapes.

Activity

Working in pairs like abilities Using ten frame dot cards, students take turns flipping a card over. Students say the number (subitise) then say the number before and after that number. Second student turns over card and does the same. Students then work out any numbers that may be between the two numbers by using a number line. Group 1 0-10 number recognition Say the number on the card. Turn card over and check if correct by counting the dots. iPad app Big Numbers Group 2 reading 2-digit numbers Use 2-digit number cards. Practise reading the numbers. Discuss the pattern of the tens eg. 23 24

Say 2-digit number students write the number. Discuss the pattern of the tens eg. 23 24

Teacher Group

Shape sorting Using SPACE PREP Attribute Blocks, students work in small groups and sort the shapes. They can choose how they sort them i.e. by colour or shape but must be able Group 4 model 2-digit to explain how they numbers sorted the shapes. Use bead frames and 2Students take a tour of digit number cards. Discuss tens and ones and each group and discuss the shapes and how how to make a number they are sorted, etc. by using tens and ones rather than counting by ones. Practise on bead frames.

Picture making Using pattern blocks or attribute blocks students play around with different shapes and make a picture out of the shapes.
