Graaff-Reinet Cape Bible Seminary

One of the realjoys that Ifind in our work is in travelling to outlying areas for times of teaching. One such place that is a realjoy to visit is a small Karoo town by the name of Graaff-Reinet. The people there are always verygracious hosts
and real eager to learn. Gordon Nelson and I went there for a total of a week from November 5 to 14. I was there for

the first half ofthe weekandtaught every evening on Philippians and Colossians. Gordon cameonWednesday andtaught
about the lives of the 12 Apostles. I had 17 people gain credit while he had 18. When we go there, the families take turns feeding us each night and in being our hosts. During the day, Ispoke at two high schools in the area and was very well received. The only drawbackto the tripwas having to go by myself as Fran and Denzil stayed behind. Itruly enjoyed my trip to work with these fine people and feel like the Lord is using us in Cape Bible Seminary to make better leaders
for the churches.

Furlougli Plans
All plans are open to change, but as of this writing in mid January, our plans for furlough are falling into place. We will leave here the end of April and arrive back in the Atlanta area May 12 @ 3:20 p.m. for our 15-month furlough. Aswas the case last furlough, we are planning on making our base in Hampton, Georgia again, as It is a good central place to travel from to the majority of our supporting churches and individuals which are in Georgia and Tennessee. As housing has been arranged, we are still praying about what to dofor transportation. We are lookingforward to our time inthe U.S. as it will be good to take a step back from our work here for evaluation. Please pray for us as we settle our affairs here in South Africa and get ready for our travelling in the U.S. We are working on a schedule for our speaking engagements. We already have plans foracampin June and Julyand for the NACC. Ifyou would like for us to come and speak and have a specificdate in mind, please contact us or our forwarding agents and we will make the appropriate plans. We look forward to seeing all of our supporters, family and friends sometime during our furlough
time.
Denzil and John Kokwe, a faithful young brother.

Visitors
When we first arrived in South Africa, we were truly amazed at the beauty of this country, as Cape Town is rated to
be one of the top 5 most beautiful cities in the world. Another thing that we were amazed at when we arrived was the lack of foreign tourists to come to this place as only British Airways flew overseas to CapeTown. Since sanctions have fallen and the country has changed, airlines come from all over the world here. There are evendirect flights from Miami
to Cape Town. One leaves here on Saturday evening at 9:00 local time and arrives in Miami at 5:30 local time.

One of the decisions that we made a long time ago, was that our house is the Lord's house and isalways open to visitors, local or otherwise. Sadto say, many missionaries havethe attitude that they want no visitors. We haveeven had missionaries tell Fran and methat ifother local missionaries cometo Cape Town, There is not a chance theyare staying with me; they can stay with you!" We feel that that attitude is not only Inhospitable, but unchristian.

InOctober, a local church member arranged for us to visit RobbenIsland, the island where Nelson Mandela

Along with other visitors, we had Roland Joseph's (minister in Kimberley) daughter and two other girls
here for a week while they were travelling with a Christian drama group.

We have converted our Thursday night Bible Study at Macassar into a Cape Bible Seminary session with good results. We seem to have better attendance.

Christmas and New Years, so do our weekly classes. It gives us a short break in the middle of the summer.

We made a weekend trip to George in December. I taught on Saturday and Fran taught on Sunday with this good group. The day after I got home from the Cape Bible Seminary session in Graaff-Reinet, Idrove the 4 hours to George to do the funeral of a young man that had died suddenly a couple of weeks before his high school graduation. I took 10 people from the Macassar congregation and left home at 4:45 a.m., getting home at 9:30 p.m.
Thanks so much to Newnan Christian Fellowship in Newnan, Georgia and Highland Meadows Christian Church in Texas for the big Christmas boxes. We really appreciate the "American" treats at Christmas. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated.

We are going to sellour Mazda before furlough. We are thankful for its good service over the last ten years. It has 300,000 kilometers on the odometer.

Prayers
-

Prayfor the churches here in Cape Town as there is too much infighting for power.
Prayfor the work of Cape Bible Seminary as we try to educate strong leaders.
Please pray for our plans for furlough.

Please pray for us as we travel with a very active 10month-old in April & May.

Thanks also to many individualswho remembered us

at Christmas.

Fran's Feelings
Hi Folks!

This was taken from Robben Island, the island prison where Nelson Mandela spent 20 years.

How are you all? We hope and trust that you had a good holiday time (Thanksgiving to New Year's) and hope that all is well with you and your loved ones. This holiday season has been very special having Denzil with us. Denzil is growing so quickly and changing all of the time. He is a sweet little guy and we are having all kinds of fun with him. He is now 6V2 months old and weighs 20 pounds and will be crawling and/or walking very soon. Hopefully you will see him before too long. Pete is still working hard, but I have been having a hard time with the teaching lately. The problem is that I have not taught much at all since I was 7 months pregnant. I really feel bad about it and you can tell that I am out of practice. I taught at conference In October

then oncewhile wewere in George in December. So please pray for me to get the energy and to make time to work on lessons.
There are many reasons why Ihave not been teaching, but Imust
keep my priorities in the order that God wants them.

Our home has been verybusywith guests comingand going. As you know, we love to have people in our home, so we have enjoyed it. We especially enjoyed having Pete's relatives from Canada. It was interesting having two Denzils inthe house. Now we are looking forward to Grandma Blackmarr's (Pete's Mom) arrival in February. Though we didn't have any family members with us for Christmas, it was a full day. We (the three of us) got up around
5:00 a.m. to open the gifts. It was fun watching Denzll. He

naturally. Then we went to church at Macassar. It was nice to

be with those folks. After church, we came home and got ready for the +/-20 friends for dinner. Since it is hot here at Christmas we were able to seat some outside in the shade. There was plenty of food, fun with games and good fellowship. Christmas was a blessed time for us, as we hope that yours was. Pete and I thank God every time we remember you all (Philippians 1:3-6). God has blessed us through all of our friends and family. We felt especially blessed this year in the birth of our son, Denzil. Pray for us as we bring him up knowing and loving God our Father. Lord willing, we will be back in the U.S. for furlough very soon. Then we will meet again, face-to-face with
lots to talk about.

End o f t h e Second! Term

As we look over our second

term in South Africa, we do so with mixed feelings. While we

would like to paint a rosy picture about everything that we have

things that we have tried have

others have not. It is the same as

for the local churches. Through

our extension school. Cape Bible Seminary, we are reaching people with teaching that might not be able to get it otherwise. We have travelled to outlying areas where people have full time jobs and, therefore, could never go to a school on a full time basis. Last year we had over 200 people attend classes with around 150 getting at least one credit. With several aspects of Cape Bible Seminary we are very pleased.

our prayers. We have been able to make contact with

several other churches in the Cape area with mixed success,

some wanting more teaching, some not. Youth groups have
started and have either sustained or dwindled, as have

ladies classes, Bible studies and preacher training classes.

Through all of these things, we never forget that God is

that fact.

As we end this second term and head to the U.S. for furlough, we look forward to seeing you In person as we
travel and then we can rejoice together in the Lord that we serve wherever we are.

Furlough Plans
We arrive in Atlanta on May 12 at 3:20 to start our furlough. Our plans are now to be in the U.S. for over a year with one of the last activities planned to be a family reunion in Canada in August of 1996. We are going to try and
see all of our supporters during this time in our travels. We will be stationed in Hampton, GA, and will travel from there for the year. As we have supporters from Georgia to Canada to Texas, we will be busy. Please call or write us or our forwarding agents to let us know when will be a good time to come and visit. June, July, September and
other dates are already full, so please let us know. Our thanks go to those who have already helped with our accommodation needs and furniture where we will

stay in Hampton. We can never say enough thanks. Our address will be P.O. Box 206, Hampton, GA 30228. Our phone number has not yet been determined, but our forwarding agents' (Mark and Annette Tuttle) number is 404929-8539. They will know how to contact us. Please pray for us as we get ready for this important time and as we
travel to the U.S. in May.

Activities of January to IVIarcti

These three months saw many varied activities. As schools did not start until late January, neither did our Bible

study classes. In January, we met with Gordon Nelson, Jerry Kennedy and Steve Zimmerman about the year's plans for Cape Bible Seminary. There would be several different sessions in varying places. February was a strange month. My mother, FIo~Blackmarr, arrived on the 6th and we were supposed to leave
to go to East London the next day. After battling flu for a week, Fran took sick the morning we were to leave and was admitted to the hospital for 5 days. Doctors, running all sorts of tests, determined her illness to be salmonella poisoning. She has recovered well, but we did have to cancel the Cape Bible Seminary trip to East London. Needless to say, my mother was a big help with Denzil during the three weeks that she was here. During her stay we went up country for a few days of tour-

and work with the Christians there.

CrandmaBlackmarr and her grandson.

The Sunday School at Macassar is having a farewell

service for us on April 9.

Pray for more laborers for the field.

Pray that Denzil travels well. So far he has been a trooper, but he has never been on a plane for a long trip. Prayfor Fran and me. Pray for the yearly conference here in South Africa that all plans will go well and a venue will be set.

Other than my mother visiting, we have also had a young Christian named Benjamin from New Zealand
with us for a short time before we leave here. He is

on a surfing trip of South Africa and got our name through Jeff Vines, a fellow missionary going to start
new churches in New Zealand.

We have sold our Mazda 323. Itgave us great service since we purchased it after our arrival in 1985. On a recent trip to George, we rolled up 300,000 kilome ters (186,000 miles)
Also on the trip to George, there were 5 decisions
made for the Lord.

Fran's Feelings
Hi Folks!

A new resident school is starting in Kimberley. It will

be called South Africa Bible Institute and will serve all of the Churches of Christ here.

Thanks, Mom, for coming here to see your grandson before anyone else. Youwill never know how special that made us feel. You were a great help and Denzil misses you.

We trust that all is well with you and yours. We are thankful to God that Iam finally better. Iwas verysickfor awhile. It started with a week of flu symptoms and then I had terrible stomach pain. I was admitted into th^ hospital on February 7 early in the morning and was discharged on February 11. It was a weird virus of some sort and salmonella poisoning. It has taken me awhile to fully recuperate, but I have. Pete's mom, Flo Blackmarr, came here to see her "grandson in Africa" on February 6 and left on the 25th. It was very nice to have her here, especially to take care of allof us when Iwas so sick. Denzil reallygot the special treatment from his grandma and he thrived on it. We are looking forward to Denzil meeting the rest of his family
and friends.

We thank the Lord for safe travel.

We are thankful that the church in Macassar contin

ues to grow strong.

Denzil is growing strong, crawling and cutting teeth. We thank the Lord for such a healthy boy.
We thank God for the strong faithful local leaders
who lead the church with an attitude of service, not
dominance.

Please pray for us as we travel back to the U.S.

Pray that the work of the Lord will continue on here for the glory of His kingdom.

Please pray that our need of furlough transportation

will be met.

Since Denzilwas born, we have been on several trips. Denzil loves to be on the go and he travels so well. The real test will be furlough which is only days away now. Please pray for us. When furlough comes around we take a look at the past term and evaluate our efforts, etc. I feel bad that during the last year and a half I have done very little teaching. Most of this time has been spent on becoming a mother. That isa poor reason, but Ihave enjoyed Denzil so much (even while Iwas pregnant) and he does keep me busy. It is easier to do other things now that he is older. During the lapse in my teaching, the ladies class in Macassar has ceased to meet. Theywere depending on me and are too lazyto carryon without me pushingthem. Ican say "lazy," because they could carry on if they really wanted to. This was a disappointment to me because they seemed eager. The Friday Sunday school class at Mfuleni has been going on without me, off and on. As far as Iknow, a local brother has been teaching them some. This was my favorite class of children because there were always 25-

30 children, plus others that attended from the neighbor

hood.

The Sunday school class In the middle of the week at Macassar now meets every Sunday a.m. Theywere being taught bytwo of the youth, Patrickand Lindie Jantjies, but a young married couple, Barry and Mary jantjies, have taken over. The Sunday school has grown in number and spirit. We are very pleased to see them carry on. During this term I had a great deal of Sunday school material that has been distributed. Some of it is being used, but a great deal is not. Until I know for sure that they want more and will use It, we will not give out any more. We will see how it goes while we are away. We do appreciate you all (especially Highland Meadows Christian Church in Texas) sending materials like we asked. We are praying that God will be able to work through them. Well, I guess changes need to be made. Maybe furlough will give us some clues and help in doing just that. Please pray about that with us. Lord willing, we will be seeing you soon. Take care and get in touch with us so that we can meet up with you somewhere in our travels. MayGod bless you as you live
for Him.

Furlough Begins The Trip Fram Home

On April 21, 1995 we left Cape Town after saying goodbye to many friends at the airport. It was sad to leave, but also good to begin our long journey to the U.S. We visited three different destinations in the Far East on our trip. The first place was Vietnam where we visited Fran's sister, Karen. She is living in Ho Chi Minh City which used to be Saigon. She is doing very well in this fascinating city. We just happened to be there during the week of celebrations for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon. We did much sight-seeing throughout the city and enjoyed this city the most of the three that we visited. Next, we flew to Singapore for three nights. While there, we did the usual tourist things and enjoyed this beautiful, hustling, bustling and hot city. The city was clean and the people very nice. Our last stop was in Hong Kong. We stayed in Kowloon in the busy commercial part of the city for three nights. While there we rode out to Hong Kong Island, toured the commercial area and relaxed for our journey stateward. On May 2, we left Hong Kong at noon and flew twelve hours to San Francisco, arriving at 9:00 a.m. the same day that we left Hong Kong, thanks to the International Date Line. When we finally arrived at Denver, Denzil was confused for several days - sleeping all day and awake all night. We spent 10 days in Wyoming with Fran's parents and sister, Sonja, so that they could do their part in spoiling Denzil. Finally on May 12 we flew to our furlough home of Hampton, Georgia where many of our friends and family met us. After a long trip it was nice to get semi-settled and we prepared for the next 12 to 15 months of furlough.

Thanks must also go to Ed Hayes of Jonesborough, Tennessee for helping me build a luggage/garment bag rack for the back of the truck to help us carry luggage more conveniently during our travels. We feel truly blessed through all of these sources. Last but not least, thanks must also go to all of the people of Berea Christian Church in Hampton, Georgia, who helped us set up home in many different ways. Thank
you, thank you, thank you!

In Hampton, we are living at 8 Woodlawn Avenue; our postal address is P.O. Box 206, Hampton, GA 30228 and our telephone number is 404-946-3156. While we are in the U.S. we can be contacted through these ways.
As this is written near the end of June, we have started our travels and have been in camp at Woodland Christian

Camp in Temple, GA and in Vacation Bible School in Jonesborough, Tennessee. We are pretty well booked through September with dates and we are looking forward to the travelling.

The Work in

As we have not heard much

since we left, all information that

we have is a couple of months old.

The church in Macassar had a fare

well service for us April 9 and we

felt honored. It continues to be

the strongest church in the Cape Town area, while there are a lot of

power struggles at Mfuleni. Bishop

Lavis continues to struggle because of some past decisions, but they are surviving. Please pray for all
three of these churches.
Denzil with elders of Mfuleni, Jdames Bool and Eric Nkebe.

We have heard from other mis-

sionaries in South Africa that violence is starting to flair up again and this Is not a good sign. We have also heard that the annual Leadership Seminar in Kimberley went well with just about all missionaries participating. Please pray for all of the work in South Africa and the country as well that it may be pleasing to the Lord.

to have a wonderful visit with her. In September she will be getting married to a wonderful guy named Toai. We are so
happy for them and pray that they will be happy.

After a few days in Vietnam, we flew to Singaporeand Hong Kong. We were typical tourists for a few days and loved
it. Denzil was wonderful and seems to enjoy the travelling.

Our first stop inthe U.S. was to visit with my folks inWyoming for ten days. We needed those days to get Denzil used to the time change. Bless his heart, he was sleeping at day and awake at night. Actually, he was not sleeping much at all. He wanted to be awake when we were, and then he thought it was still day time at night time and could not sleep. Granny and PappyHamilton had everything that we needed - bed, toys, chairs, diapers, etc. Therefore, all that Pete and
I had to do was play and rest; we are in good shape now.

On May12 we arrived in Hampton, Georgia (where our furlough home is)and found that Pete'sfamilyand home church family had a house furnished for us and Denzil. They had groceries, diapers, toys, linens, everything! So as you can see, we are well taken care of and we appreciate everything and everybody (family and friends). Denzil has been quite popular on the "Here'sDenzil Tour." He has been sickwith a fever and virus only once and that Is great when you think of all of the changes that he has experienced. He is a happy and good baby. Now, if he would
only enjoy going to bed morel I Well, we are looking forward to seeing everybody in our travels. We willsee you soon. May God bless you as you serve

Etc. I (Pete) had to go to camp by myself in June because of Denzil being sick for a couple of days. Thanks to John Greer for a great week of camp. Fran'sgrandmother, who is 93, has been in the hospital in Missouri with a broken hip and shoulder. Fran and Denzil spent ten days with her and Fran's family in Missouri during June. While we were in Jonesborough, Tennessee for a Vacation Bible School, Laura Whitaker and others had a birthday

party for Denzil's birthday on June 29. This followed a birthday party by his Grandpa and Grandma Blackmarr in
Georgia, the day before he left for Tennessee. Denzil says thanks to everyone for all the gifts and kindness! Thanks to Mark Tuttle, our forwarding agent, I got to go to the Memorial Golf Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. I actuallygot to talk to Ernie Els and David Frost, two South African golfers, getting their attention by speaking to them in Afrikaans, one of the languages in South Africa. One of them said to call him when Igot back to South Africa, and we could get together. I said to myself, "Fat Chance ...." Ha!

We thank the Lord for safe travel back to the U.S.

We are thankful for all that has been done for us to help us to get readjusted to the U.S. We are thankful that Denzil is such a great traveller.

Furlough Travels ~ July through September

As goes with the territory with furlough, we have been on the road quite a bit. We enjoy travelling,
so the last three months have been enjoyable. In July, we took part in a Vacation Bible School that was held at Monrovia Christian Church in Monrovia, Indiana. Fran's sister, Sonja, organized to have several missionaries there to teach the individual classes

about the countries that they were serving. It worked very well and we enjoyed the "International VBS." After spending a week there, we went to the North American Christian Convention in Indianapolis. We had a booth there and shared in two workshops. We saw many friends there that we had not seen in a
long time. The Sunday after the convention, we spoke at First Christian Church in Marshall, Illinois. Following the morning services, we followed the minister, Jeff Noel, to llliana Christian Assembly in Washington, Indiana to take part in the Deeper Life week of which Jeff was Dean. We will talk more about

everybody involved. During that week, our forwarding agents,

Wlark and Annette Tuttle, also did a VBS for us at Bethel

Christian Church in Conyers, Georgia. Following that week, we took part in a pre-teen week of camp at Woodland

Deeper Life Week at llliana Christian Assembly

Fran and I thoroughly enjoy spending weeks in camp talking to youth about missions. During our two

furloughs, we have been fortunate to work with Jeff Noel during two weeks of camp at llliana Christian Assembly in Washington, Indiana. This year we worked with the Deeper Life Week. One of the special things about those two weeks is that when they set an offering goal, they instruct us what they would like for us to purchase with it to help in our work. In 1990, we purchased a video camera that we are still using here and in South Africa. This year, after learning about our computer's demise, they wanted us to purchase
a new one with their record offering from the week of camp. They also told us to get one that would make it possible to go on-line with E-mail, which we plan on doing. We have been able to purchase a Gateway 2000 with Windows 95 and are in the process of learning all about it. Thanks so much to Jeff, John, Doug and all involved in this week of camp. Beyond monetary considerations, we felt spiritually encouraged by all 180 campers and the subjects for the week. May God bless you all for your service to Him.

Fran's Feelings
Hi Folks,

Are you getting ready for the holiday season yet? Ican't believe that it isfall alreadyand that Thanksgiving and Christmas are "just around the corner." We are enjoying the beauty in the changes of color in the trees.
Denzil loves stomping through the leaves. He is a cutle.

Denzil and Iwere blessed by the opportunity to go to Vietnam with my parentsto be with my youngestsister.

Karen, on her wedding day. Karen and Toai Nguyen were married on September 24th, so we were gone for two and a half weeks. Pete had to stay behind to fulfill a promise to the folks at Highland Meadows
Christian Church in Texas. We were to be in Texas

for a month and be part of their Missions Fair. It went well and Pete had a good time except for the week that he was sick with the flu. I guess he just
missed Denzil and me too much!! Ha!

The wedding was a nice combination of an American wedding and a Vietnamese wedding. A couple of things that were funny to us were the following:
1. The master of ceremonies announced each
of us as we walked down the aisle.

2. Ihad to carry Denzil, my purse and his diaper bag down the aisle because we arrived late (that's a long story), but I held my fan (like a bridesmaid is supposed to) in the other hand. What a sight that
must have been.

3. After the wedding party was in place, a song was played for the bride and groom that sounded
like the tune to "Three Blind Mice" and it made me

thinkof the Three Stooges. We were allshaking with laughter under our breath.

out of my

chairat the reception. Itwas in slow motion, but Iended up on the floor
with my feet and the chair going up In the air.

In spite of a few funny things, it was lovely and I am so happy that Ihad the chance to go. Toai isa wonderful Christian man. Itwas humid and hot; it rained almost every day. My mother and Igot sickthe day after we got back to America, and she is still having some problems. I, though, am much better. Denziltravelledwelland wasn'tsickatall. He only got a bump on the head from a fall against the bed while playing. Thanks to one and all who helped to make this trip possible. Until next time, may God bless you as you serve Him. Ilookforward to seeing
you in our travels.
Love,
Fran
