Winter, Spring 2007 - Vol. 17, No. 3 & 4

Furlough Begins
Greetings from furlough in the U.S.!! We are glad to be back stateside as it is always good to be back with family and friends after a four-year term. We left South Africa on November 29, 2006 and, after spending several days traveling and seeing parts of the world not before seen by us, we arrived in Texas on December 11. We spent Christmas with Fran's family in Texas (her mother and father, her brother Jonathan and wife Teri) and we were glad to have her sister and brother-in-law (Dale and Sonja Hawkins) from Missouri also with us there. The only one of her family who was not able to be with us was her sister and family who are in Southeast Asia. Itwas good to spend time with the Hamiltons during the Christmas season. After celebrating Christmas in Texas, we went on to Georgia on December 28th as Georgia is our home base for traveling through the furlough year. Usually, most things are set in place as to housing etc., before our arrival but this year was different. We did not know where we would be staying and we had nothing set up before our arrival in Georgia. But God is faithful and, within a couple of weeks, everything was worked out. The kind people at McDonough Christian Church in McDonough, Georgia, have really come through and taken us under their wing this year as they helped in many different ways. A member of the church donated a car several years ago for missionaries to use on furlough and we are using the 1999 Chrysler Grand Voyager for our travels this year. Scott Gregory, the missions minister of the church, and the mission board of the church let us use a cell phone as our main phone and they also helped in arranging some furniture for the house
that we have been able to rent. We were able to rent a house

from the minister of the church, Paul Leslie. Paul and Mary,

we can never thank-you enough. The house is absolutely perfect In every way; it is ideally situated to the interstate for traveling and is a real God-send. Our housing prayers were answered within a week of arriving in Georgia. Last, but not least, we were able to use some furniture given to us by our fonwarding agents, Mark and Annette Tuttle, who were moving to Ohio at the same time as we were getting settled. We say thanks to everyone who has helped us get settled for this year of furlough and the transition has gone well. Our physical address for the year is: 1723 Hwy. 81 W., McDonough GA, 30253. Our postal address is P. 0. Box 206, Hampton GA, 30228 and our telephone number for the year is: 678-697-3719. Feel free to contact us in any of those three ways. Our plans are to return to the field in January of 2008, Lord willing.

Furlough Travels Begin

We often talk to fellow missionaries, who, when

speaking of furlough, look on the time with disdain. Maybe we are not normal (?), but we always look forward to furlough

even with all of the traveling. Iwas remarking the other day that there are few other types of work where our 12-year-old son, Denzil, could be exposed to so many different types of events and places at such a young age. Since our supporting churches are far and wide, our travels take us to places that are far and wide. We have a supporting church inTexas, one
in Mississippi, several in Georgia and Tennessee and then we also have them in Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. So, you see, our travels take us to varied locations. Our goal is to spend at least one full Sunday with each supporting church so we can spend quality time with them, and thank them in person for their help over the last term. Our first trip of this furlough took us to Chatham Heights Christian Church in Martinsville, Virginia, for the weekend of January 28. We enjoyed the time with the folks as we spoke for their faith promise rally. Edna Cannaday was a gracious host for the night that we spent there and we enjoyed seeing the people again. We spoke for the Sunday School and for the morning service and then left in the afternoon. We spent Sunday night in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with good friends, Ed and Jane Phillips, and then went back to our home in Georgia on the 29th. The weekends of the 4th and 11th of February saw us staying locally and spending time with local supporters in Georgia. We attended McDonough Christian Church and the Browns Mills Church in Cumming, Georgia. On the weekend of the 18th, we spoke for the yearly faith promise at Berea Christian Church in Hampton, Georgia. We consider this our home church on furlough, and it is always a pleasure to
be with them. Jeff Jones and his missions committee did a

over the last ten years. We had great attendance and saw a lot of old friends from internships. Thanks, Stacy, so much for arranging this gathering as it did our hearts good to see so many people. And thanks to all of you who attended, it
was great to see you.

On March 2, we had to put Denzil on a flight by himself to go back to Atlanta to be part of a middle school trip with the McDonough Christian Church youth group. He got there with an hour to spare as he met the bus at an interchange and
got on and went back to Tennessee for the weekend with the

youth. Fran and I drove on to Amory, Mississippi, to be part

of their faith promise weekend on the 4th. We stayed with J.T and Dot Thornton, as usual, and enjoyed their hospitality and really enjoyed the weekend with folks in Mississippi. After speaking there, we headed back to Georgia on the 5th. But here is where the traveling got tricky Right before we left on the trip to Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi, Fran lost her front tooth. (I told her it was ok, it would help in raising support....she was not amused.) Between Mississippi and Birmingham, Alabama, I got the idea to get her a plane ticket out of Birmingham (tickets are cheaper out of there than Atlanta) to fly to Texas to see our dentist there, plus she would be in Texas for two other things. She would be in Texas for her mother's 70th birthday and she would also be there during her brother Jonathan's surgery to have his iliostomy reversed (a procedure that resulted from his cancer of a year ago). I would take care of the speaking engagements that we had planned while she was gone. I arrived back in Georgia on the 5th and spoke at a church in McDonough, Georgia, at the request of long time friend Bonnie Hunt. I spoke for their Wednesday evening service and enjoyed the renewal of friendships with she and
her sister, Connie.

great job of setting up the day. It Vs always tough to preach at your home church, but the day went great. Thank-you, Berea, for the great day! We left Georgia on the 22nd and headed north to Illinois.
We spent the weekend of the 25th with Don and Claudia Dorris in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and spoke for the Sunday School of Long Prairie Christian Church in Woodlawn, Illinois. Itwas good to see the people there. That afternoon, we headed

On the 11th of March, the Georgia Missionary Rally started and, while it is a week-long program, the committee sends us around the state of Georgia representing the rally

west to Bethel, Missouri, to spend the next three nights with Fran's sister and husband. Dale and Sonja Hawkins. We left there on the 28th and went to St. Louis to spend two nights with Stacy Garner and his family. As you might remember, Stacy heads up Gateway Educational Services and he leads the internships when he comes to South Africa. He was very kind on this visit to arrange a reunion of sorts with interns

in area churches before the rally proper starts during Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of that week at Southwest Christian Church. On the 11th, Denzil and I went to Douglasville Christian Church in Douglasville, Georgia, and we spoke for the Sunday School hour and for the morning service. This is one of our long-time supporting churches and we were glad to renew acquaintances with the membership there. On Wednesday evening, Denzil and Itraveled to Adairsville, Georgia, and spoke at the First Christian Church. We had

a very good reception and enjoyed the people there. On the weekend of the rally, March 18, I spoke atAustell Christian Church in Austell, Georgia, for both Sunday School and church again and enjoyed the fellowship with Clay and Brenda Henry, friends for a long time through other churches. That evening I spoke for the main rally at Southwest to close the rally week and I feel that it all went pretty well. It was a very busy, but productive week. Thanks must go to the committee for including us on the program for this year and we look forward to doing it again if possible. On the 21 st of March, Denzil and 1went to McDonough Christian Church and spoke to the elementary youth meeting to just tell them the basics of being a missionary and we exposed them to some South African games that the children play there. Julie Weaver, of McDonough Christian Church, set the time up for us and we enjoyed being with the kids. On the morning of the 22nd Denzil and I hit the road north to Ohio (he has become quite the navigator for his dad) and we drove to Granville, Ohio, where our fonwarding agents
Mark and Annette Tuttle now live. While we were in Ohio, 1

Denzil and I got the word from Fran while we were in Ohio that things were not looking good for Jonathan, so we changed our plans of going back to Georgia on the
26th and instead, after the services in Ohio on the 25th, we

headed west to Dallas to be with the family. We drove the 1100 miles arriving in Texas on Tuesday morning the 27th to help where we could. We spent the week with the family, attended Highland Meadows Christian Church in Colleyville, Texas, on the 1st of April and then Denzil and I drove back to Georgia, arriving in April 3. Fran followed us back to Georgia on the 7th. Is it any wonder that we jokingly call our furlough "The
Amazing Race?' As you can see, furlough is busy, but we can honestly say that we enjoy it. We have only just begun this year of traveling with many other places to go. We look fonward to

seeing you in our travels and if we can come see you and present the work please be in contact with us. We would love to share what God is doing in South Africa.

spoke at Eastpointe Christian Church just outside Columbus on the 25th. We were glad to be able to share with them as
their minister and wife, Brian and Pam Leonard, had come to

South Africa in 2005. Although they were away in Mexico on a mission trip, we did see many old friends. We will be going
back there in November to share the work of South Africa.

Etc.
* When we left South Africa, we left our car with a leader

Iwrote earlier that the beginning of March is where the traveling got "tricky." You may have noticed that Denzil and 1did a lot of traveling and speaking alone in March. While Fran did get her dental work done in Texas and her brother did

of the youth group who has been trying to save to buy a new car. It will help him in his work. ' In traveling back to the U.S., we spent 6 nights in Sydney and 5 nights in Los Angeles. While In Los Angeles, Fran got to be part of the audience for a taping of "The Price is Right" but did not get the call to "Come on Downf

have surgery, things did not go as planned with the surgery.

Fran was supposed to be home with us on the 16th, but we

changed it to the 23rd, then the 27th and then finally to April 7th. Jonathan's surgery did not go as well as planned and to make a long story short, after complications with the first
surgery, the doctors had to operate again on the 22nd. While operating to stop his internal bleeding, the doctors informed the family that they just about lost him on the operating table.

* Denzil passed grade 6 with straight A's and is doing grade

7 as we travel.

* We did a wedding for a young couple in South Africa 10 days before we left and we were glad to be part of the ceremony of this fine Christian couple. They are doing well. * Stacy Garner is again leading an internship to South Africa this year. They will be in Graaff-Reinet, Kimberley, and East London helping in VBSs and camps. * We are very thankful for Eric Hoover of McDonough Christian Church for helping us in all of our promotional material this year. Eric, you are very great!!

He was then put into a drug induced coma, put into ICU and the outcome looked bleak. We had people praying all over the world and we are very thankful to say that he has come out of the coma, is back to recovering at home, and through the graciousness of our Lord, he is still with us.

VBSs, Churches and Camp - Furlough Continues

Greetings once again from the roads of furlough. April, May and June were once again full of travels and visits with supporters of the work in South Africa. Six months through furlough, we have enjoyed our time stateside; we are and the plan is to return back home to South Africa in January. Please pray for us as we continue
to travel.

One of the things that we get to do during our furlough is speak about the work in South Africa at VBSs. This furlough has seen us do a few of these and we enjoyed them very much. We have been involved in VBSs in Jacksonville, Florida, Jonesborough, Tennessee, Tucker, Georgia and Newnan, Georgia. We were well received in all of these and it was great to renew acquaintances in these places. They all ranged in attendance from 18 to 250, and it was time well spent. The longest distance
that we had to travel between VBSs was when the VBS in

Christian Church in Hampton, Georgia, and First Christian Church in Adairsville, Georgia, who did a VBS for us while we were in other places. Also during April, May and June, we spoke at several churches concerning the work. We spent the entire month of May with Highland Meadows Christian Church in Colleyville, Texas, and we were able to share with small groups and Sunday School classes who were interested. During these months we also spoke in Newnan, Georgia, Mountain City,Tennessee, Jonesborough, Tennessee, and in Tucker, Georgia. We enjoyed spending this time with

Jacksonville ended on a Friday and the one in Tennessee started on Monday. Thanks to all of you who have entertained us and thanks for your interest in the work of the Lord in South Africa. Thanks must also go Berea

our supporting churches and it was great to see them. We hope to see the rest of the churches before we head home in January. Lastly, we were involved with camps for two weeks. Both of these camps were at Woodland Christian Camp in Temple, Georgia, and with the younger age groups. We found out that we are not as young as we used to be! When asking the campers who was over a certain age, we found we were the oldest there by 18 years! I am glad that Denzil still keeps us young! Thankyou Claire and Betsy
for asking us to be at the camp. We had a great time. As you can see, we have been on the road most of the time. From the first of May to the first of July we spent

Can we compare the two? It can't be done and it isn't fair to try. It is such a blessing to be able to be involved

strongly encourage all of you to experience both as well. To miss out on such a blessing is a sad thought. As you know, Every June/July in South Africa we try to have at least 3-5 V.B.S.'s. This is made possible with the help we receive from mission teams and interns that come over from the States, as well as the supplies sent by churches from the States. The average attendance for each week is 200 - 500 kids. With the exception of a few that are only curious...all those kids come with such an enthusiasm and an eagerness to hear, learn and receive a blessing from God. They want to be there, they want to participate, and it takes very little to please them. The workers of the V.B.S. always leave with the feeling that they have been blessed more than the children they
came to work with.

God is good! We receive blessing beyond words when we serve Him. We receive when we give of our
selves to Him.

So far this summer, we have been given the

pleasure of being a part of several VB.S.'s (plus 2 that were done by someone else for the work in South Africa) in several different States. We always leave each time with the feeling that we have been blessed more than the

money that is given for the work in S.A., it's not only about
all the crafts, lessons and left over accessories that are

Wy.. r r-

donated, it's not only about all the school supplies that have been bought for the children in S.A. . . . those are only part of the blessings. More than anything, it has been the hearts that have touched our hearts. There are many examples I could share with you to try to explain what I mean, but 1would like to share with you the experience we had with two little boys in Florida and a young man
in Tennessee.

Carter and Marcus are from Florida, they are 5 years

old and they each have their story, but they both have the
same "heart" for the children in South Africa. When these

boys saw, for the first time, one of the clips on a DVD we brought... showing pictures and telling them about the

children in S.A

their hearts were touched with a desire

Claire Wright and Betsie Richards were the directors of a weel< of camp that we attended. They're tail<ingabout com ing to SA next year and helping with a VBS. Now that their
picture is here, the pressure is on!!!!!

to help them and a love for those children that only God can give. Carter was in tears and said, "I love those kids! Iwant to do something for them!" Marcus sat quietly, deep in thought. After a few quiet moments, the whole class

started asking questions and making precious comments

about their feelings. It wasn't until the following day we found out how

all about hearts being given to Jesus and being given the opportunity to make a difference for the Kingdom.
Thank you, to all of you, for all the ways you open

touched and sincere these two boys were. Carter had gone home and informed his family he wanted to do something for the children in S.A. The following day, before V.B.S. he sold lemonade in his front yard, feeling the heat of the Florida sun, but knowing he was doing something to make a difference. Marcus went home and informed his parents that he wanted to give his savings.
Marcus' mom informed us that he had been saving coins in a big jar for three years.. .this was his "life savings" he was giving. This was a jar that had some of the most precious things to him (his treasure chest). He insisted on giving it all, he wanted to make a difference. Austin is a teenager from Tennessee who also
wanted to make a difference. He watched the DVD and

your hearts to us and the work going on in South Africa.

God is praised and glorified!

May you see the blessings in serving a mighty, the

only and true God!
With the love of Jesus,
Fran

We are continuing with Denzil's home schooling this year and he is still making straight A's. He turned 13

listened to our speech about the work we are a part of in S.A. during the Sunday School hour. It was while we were enjoying the cookout after the morning service that Austin walked up to us with his mom, holding a package. Austin had gone out immediately after church, got the money that he has been saving to buy a musical instrument that he has been wanting, and bought some school supplies
for us to take to some children in S.A.

We got word from the young man that is driving our car
in South Africa that he was involved in an accident. The

car was not damaged too bad, and we are pleased that he was not injured.
Fran's folks, A1 and Annette Hamilton, are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and we are gathering as a family in Texas the last week of August to help them
celebrate.

These young boys know what it is to sacrifice, to give, to serve and to have a heart for the lost. These young boys taught adults about what it is to put the Kingdom first. These young hearts moved and touched our hearts and many others. I know they will be blessed In their giving. 1pray that they will never lose heart for the lost. These young boys (along with many others) are making a difference for the Kingdom by their love for God and their giving to the children in S.A. it's not about us. Vacation Bible School or Holiday Bible School, it doesn't matter what we call it . . . both are important programs that take place all over the world making a difference in the lives and hearts of many children. It's

Denzil got to go to camp twice, once while we were there working, and then once with the McDonough Christian Church youth group. He has blended in well. Stacy Garner of Gateway Educational services took a group of interns to South Africa in June and July and did a VBS, camp and revivals in Graaff-Reinet and Kimberley. He reports that the people there are doing great. We were glad to hear a first hand report from
the brothers and sisters back home.

A family photo on Denzil's 13th birthday.

We celebrated Denzil's 13th birthday in Georgia with his grandparents, cousins, and Aunt and Uncle.

Furlough Travels -- July to September 2007

As we wrote in our last newsletter, we are on

the road quite a bit during our time in the U.S. But we know that it goes with the territory and we enjoy and see things that the average person would not. As you wiil see by the enclosed pictures, we have covered a lot of states during our travels. July started out with us being in camp in Georgia and it ended with us being on the start of a five week trip that took us through Canada and points west. We left on the 27th of July and in the next five weeks we covered 6100 miles. On our way north, we spoke at the Derrs Christian Church in Derrs, Pennsylvania, and thanked the people there for their sponsoring of Sunday School materials in 2006. Leaving there on Monday we spent the next two weeks in Canada, visiting relatives from Montreal to Toronto. Itwas great to see everybody and to catch up on all of the family news. While in Canada
we were able to share the work of South Africa with

Jonathan, back to college there. It was a good time to have some quality time with a good friend. Thanks,
Mark, so much.

During the five week trip we also visited friends and relatives in Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Sheridan and Indianapolis, Indiana; Stillwater, Oklahoma; and Jackson, Mississippi. After five weeks, we got home on September 2. During September we had some personal time in travels and we are thankful for all of the people that made those relaxing trips possible. Our plans for the rest of furlough are much of the same -- traveling to speak about the work and reporting to supporters. We will be gone most of November, and our plans are to leave Georgia for South Africa at the end of January. Please continue to pray for us as we

make our plans for the rest of furlough. We look fon/vard to seeing you in our travels.

the church that my mother grew up in, the Shawville Wesleyan Church in Shawville, Quebec. Heading back into the U.S., we spoke at Twin
Tiers Christian Church in Painted Post, New York. We

had a great time there and were very warmly received by one and all. Later in August, we spoke at Ferguson Christian Church in Ferguson, Missouri, and a had a good visit with Stacy Garner. If you remember, Stacy works with Gateway Educational Services and heads up the internships every year to South Africa. We are very thankful for him and his work. We are looking forward to his return to South Africa next year with another internship, if you are interested, please contact us as we would love to have you come visit. In our travels, we made a stop in Granville, Ohio, to spend some time with our fonwarding agents, Mark and Annette Tuttle. While there I accompanied Mark to Johnson City, Tennessee, as he took his son.

Furlough Comes to a Close

As this furlough comes to a close, we thank the
Lord for our safe travel of over 42,000 miles and for

God's people who have helped in every way. Thanks must especially go to McDonough Christian Church in McDonough, Georgia, who went beyond the call of duty to help us this year by supplying us with a vehicle, a phone, and furniture, while individual members of the church helped us with housing. Thanks so much to Scott Gregory, Paul Leslie, Tom Patterson and everybody else involved for all that you did to help us be settled {when we were) on the furlough. We can never say thank-you enough. May God biess you in all that you do.

To also help us get settle on furlough we also thank our forwarding agents, Mark and Annette Tuttle, who further supplied us with furniture for our stay here. As we were arriving in Georgia, they were moving to Ohio. In fact, the same day that they were moving things to Ohio, we were moving in our housing. God makes no mistakes and we are very thankful for Mark and Annette and their generosity. To anyone else that helped in any way, we say thanks. Furlough is part of our work in South Africa and without the help of individuals during furlough, it would be a struggle. Thanks to one and all for all that you did to help us during this furlough year.

A reception was held at the National Missionary Convention in honor of

Outreach International's 30 years of existence.

During October, November, and December, we

continued on the road to several states. On the last two

weekends of October, we spoke at Westside Church of Christ in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Lone Oak Christian Church in Johnson City, Tennessee. There we reconnected with many friends and gave updates of the work in South Africa. On Wednesday between those two Sunday we were at Dewey Christian Church in Mountain City, Tennessee. Leaving Tennessee, we traveled to Granville, Ohio, to spend some time with our forwarding agents, Mark and Annette Tuttle, and we then spoke at Eastpointe Christian Church in
Columbus, Ohio on November 4.
We flew out of Columbus on the 5th to Texas

Fran with her brother Jonathan and sister Sonja.

and spent the next week with the Highland Meadows Christian Church in Colleyville, Texas, and took part
in their missions weekend on the weekend of the 10th

and 11th. Ajai Lall was the featured speaker there and he did a great job. We flew back to Ohio on the 13th and attended the National Missionary convention from the 15th to the 19th. After a month of traveling we arrived home to Georgia and had Thanksgiving there with family.
On the 27th of November, I flew to Tucson,

Arizona, and picked up a donated vehicle from Randy and Karen Dorris and then drove the next four days back to Georgia. Arriving on Saturday, we then spoke at First Christian Church in Carrollton and had a great time with Larry and Sandy Vierling. The next day we loaded up and went to Florida where we spent a holiday at Walt Disney world. Thanks must go to Andy and Terri Daugherty for sharing their time share and making it possible to enjoy Disney. After spending Christmas in Hampton, we spoke on the 30th about the work at McDonough Christian Church and thanked the church for all that they have done to help the work in South Africa. Our plans, Lord willing, are to send our container to South Africa on January 28, flyto Texas on February 3, and then fly on to South Africa February 12. Our furlough has been a month longer this time due to circumstances beyond our control, but it has been a great time stateside. We have covered over 40,000 miles in 25 states and 2 provinces of Canada, and we have seen a lot of beautiful country while visiting a lot of great churches. We are thankful for what the Lord has done in our lives during this year. Please pray for us as we journey home, and thanks so much for making our furlough a successful one.

Pete and Denzil in Mountain City, Tennessee.

Our good friend in Tennessee, Ed l-iayes.

Etc.
*We are shipping a 20 foot container from Georgia on the 28th of January. We are sending back Sunday School materials, school materials, furniture that has been donated, and personal items, {see below) *Flrst Christian Church in Ferguson, Missouri, gave us Sunday School and school materials while Englewood Christian Church in Jacksonville, Florida, and Dewey Christian Church in Mountain

City, Tennessee, did the same through their

Vacation Bible Schools. Berea Christian Church in

Hampton, Georgia also donated an unused flannel

graph set. *Crossroads Christian Church in Gray, Tennessee,

(and the Westside church of Jonesborough, Tennessee) through the direction of Ross and Marie Carmack, gathered several hundred pairs of shoes and coats to be given away to the kids back in South Africa. These will be given to kids who do not have the luxury of coats or shoes. Look for pictures in
upcoming newsletters.

*Furniture to go in the container has been donated by

Mark and Annette Tuttle, Mark and Lisa Andrews,

and McDonough Christian Church. We took back several pieces in 2003 and they are still being used by the Christians there. These also will be put to good use.

We enjoyed Walt Disney World thanks to Andy and

Terr! Daugherty of McDonough, Georgia. Thanks, Terri, for being our tour guide!

*The Don Hicks small group at Highland Meadows Christian Church in Colleyville, Texas, also helped

us gather more materials for the container. This group has been tremendous with helping us get
cases of Bibles and has done so again.

*To one and all who helped gather materials for the container, we say thanks for what you have done for the work in South Africa Many lives will be
touched.

*0n a personal note, Denzil passed grade 7 with straight A's and we are real proud of him.
*Randy and Karen Dorris of Tucson, Arizona, donated a car for furiough travel and it was a great help.
Thanks so much.

*When we arrive back in South Africa, we will hit the

ground running as we already have some sessions

We enjoyed some family time in Florida in December.
