Society. St. Louis Chapter www.aspe-stl.com

HAPPY NEW YEAR ! ! !

I hope everyone had the most joyous holiday season and I want to wish you
all a prosperous new year ! ! !
Thanks to everyone that attended last months meeting, we had a great
turnout, again. It was a great presentation on the Illinois Plumbing Code.
In January we will reach another milestone as we celebrate our 35th
anniversary as a chapter. Since some of our past Presidents and members spend
winter in the warmer parts of the country, we plan to do our celebration in the spring
so that they can attend. Look for that around April or May.
ASPEs 2011 Technical Symposium will take place in Orlando, FL from
October 27th thru October 30th. ASPE is currently taking submissions from individuals
who are interested in presenting technical sessions. If you are looking to share your
knowledge and design experience with others in the plumbing industry who are eager
to learn, then please contact ASPE to be considered. Send in your contact information
(including your mailing address, email address and phone number), a brief
professional biography about the person who would give the presentation and a
description of the presentation topic which would be covered and what would be
contained in the presentation. Keep in mind these presentations need to remain non-
proprietary in nature as the Symposium Education Sessions are about learningnot
selling. Each session will be a minimum of 1.5 or 3 hours in length (with breaks) so
make sure the presentations are such that they cover a topic in detail. If you have any
questions, please contact Cliff Reis at the ASPE office by phone (847) 296-0002 or via
email at: creis@aspe.org.
Also coming up later this spring are our chapter elections. Anyone interested
in seeking a position on the ASPE StL Board, please contact Bill McKanna at: (314)
692-1573; or: bmckanna@murphy-stl.com.
Our next chapter meeting will be Tuesday, January 4th, at the Engineers
Club. Please come out and join us. Hope to see you all then.
Until next time, please remember to RSVP to Mike Todd, and bring a friend
along to the meeting!

We had 42 people attend our December meeting, which was another great
turnout. I did have a few phone calls asking where the meeting was going to
be held, because we changed the location of the November meeting twice,
with the last change being the day before our meeting. Please remember, that
our meetings will normally be held at the Engineers Club and if we have to
change the location like we did in November, the Board will contact its
members with the information. Our speaker was Scott Stanley, Plumbing
Inspector for the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The current code for the State of Illinois is the 2004 Illinois Plumbing Code.
You can go on-line at www.idph.state.il.us, and choose from the following
menu: Laws and Rules, Current laws and Rules, Environmental Occupations
and Programs, Plumbing, and Illinois License Law.
Other Items of interest are: Illinois Accessibility Code (Doug Gamble Illinois
Accessibility Specialist (217)-782-8530, State of Illinois Capital Development
Board and the Illinois Attorney General Office @ cdb.state.il.us, American
Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) @ www.asse-plumbing.org.
Cleanout Equivalent: Fixture Trap A fixture trap, readily removable without
disturbing concealed plumbing or requiring fixture removal, is acceptable as a
cleanout equivalent, if there is no more than one (1) 90 degree bend on the
line to be rodded. A water closet is not considered a cleanout equivalent.
Fire Sprinkler Systems: Include the Fire System Waterline and backflow
preventer into the plumbing plan instead of in the Site Plan.
Fire Safety Systems The installation of any fire safety system involving the
potable water supply system shall be protected against backflow as follows:
1. A double detector check valve or double check valve backflow preventer
assembly shall be installed at the fire safety systems point of connection to
the potable water supply when a fire safety system has no chemical
additives or non-potable connection, but has one or more fire department
hose connections (for boosting pressure and flow to the fire safety system)
that are served only by firefighting apparatus connected to a public water
supply or a fire department that does no use chemical additives or rely upon
any non-potable water supply.

2.
fixed air gap with a break tank or other storage vessel or a reduced pressure
principle backflow preventer assembly (RPZ) shall be installed at the fire safety
systems point of connection to the potable water supply when: The fire safety
system contains additives such as antifreeze, fire retardant or other chemicals. (The
RPZ may be located at the point of connection to that section of the system
containing such additives when the systems connection to the water supply is
protected by a double detector check valve backflow preventer assembly); or Non-
Potable water flows into the fire safety system by gravity: or there is a permanent
or emergency connection whereby water can be pumped into the fire safety system
from any other non-potable source; or Fire department connections are available
that could permit water to be pumped into the fire safety system from a non-
potable source capable of serving the fire safety system. (A non-potable source of
water shall be considered capable of serving the fire safety system under the
following conditions; It must be capable of year-round use, maintained with at least
50,000 gallons of usable water, not subject to freezing, accessible to firefighting
pumper equipment, and located within 1,700 feet of the facility.)
Gasoline, oil and Flammable Liquids: Commercial vehicle repair garages, gasoline
stations with grease racks or pits, and oil change facilities shall be provided with floor

drains or trench drains connected to a gas and oil interceptor.
Provide Floor or trench drains connected to a holding tank in lieu
of a gas and oil interceptor when these drains are connected to a
private sewage disposal system. Gas and Oil Interceptors shall
be of cast iron, steel, polyethylene, polymer concrete or equally
durable fiberglass materials suitable for gas and oil. Fiberglass
interceptors shall not be used for receiving any substance other
than gas and oil. Poured concrete interceptors are prohibited.
Poured concrete trench drains are prohibited for gas and oil
discharges.
Other comments brought up during Questions portion of
presentation:
Trench drains need to be polymer concrete. They are thinking of
allowing dishwashers to discharge into the grease trap. Presently,
any 3 pot sink must discharge into the grease trap. Metering
faucets for public restrooms is no longer a requirement. On
remodeling projects, nothing over 2 feet of dead-leg will be
allowed on waste, vent and water lines. The Acorn Vacuum
System has been approved for clear waste (usually for grocery
stores).

List of Illinois Plumbing Inspectors:
Matt Popov (618)-971-2232
Bob Shaeffer (217)-836-1762
Scot Stanley (618)-889-8681
In January we will have Mike Juhnke with Lochinvar speaking on
efficiency standards that all manufacturers must test by and
adhere to and what changes are coming to the minimum
efficiencies. In February we will have our own Joe Scott from
Cannon Design speaking on the musings of a plumbing Designer
and for March we will have Mike Doychak with PVI.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and
please remember to bring a potential member with you to our
January 4
th
meeting and get your reservations in to Mike Todd.
