cleanliness and orderliness, promptness and punctuality, sense of responsibility, love of God and patriotism. The same method will be applied between the two groups, the pupils who are taught by a self-contained classroom structure and the pupils who are taught in a departmentalized classroom setting. Identifying the relationship and significant difference between the classroom structure, attitude towards peers and teachers, academic achievement (General average) and behavior of pupils.

Population and Sample of the Study The subject used in the study were selected pupils coming from public elementary schools and by means of random sampling which means that each member of a population will have an equal chance of being included and possesses the qualities of the actual population. These respondents will come mainly from grade five and six pupils of 24 public elementary schools within the municipality of San Rafael, Bulacan. In order for each school to be properly represented the researcher identified first the number of school within the district and determining the number of school which utilizes the self-contained and departmentalized setting that constitutes of 24 schools, 12 schools using the self-contained classroom structure and the other half for the departmentalized structure. The researcher will use the random sampling in choosing the sample for each school which consists of 240 respondents for classroom structures, 120 for the self-contained and 120 for the departmentalized. The distribution of respondents by school is shown in Table 1, As shown in the table each school has an equal number of respondents from both classroom structure.

This research will utilize the purposive sampling where certain qualifications will be met in selecting the respondents who will meet the objectives of this study. The study will have for its subjects selected male and female in grades five and six. The 24 public elementary schools for this study will include the following: Caingin Elementary School, San Roque Elementary School, Maguinao Elementary School, Pinacpinacan Elementary School, Capihan Elementary School, Paco Elementary School, Tukod Elementary School, San Rafael Central Elementary School,Maronquillo Elementary School,Pantubig Elementary School, Talacsan Elementary School, Dagatdagatan Elementary

School,Sampalok Elementary School, Pulo Elementary School, Diliman Elementary School, San Agustin Elementary School, Ulingao elementary School, Salapungan Elementary School, Pasong Intsik Elementary School, Pasong Bangkal Elementary School, Pulong Bayabas Elementary School, Pasong Callos Elementary School, Coral na Bato Elementary School and Tambubong Elementary School all within the municipality of San Rafael Bulacan.

Research Instruments The instruments that will be used in this study will be adopted by the researcher. The brief descriptions of the instruments were as follows: Questionnaire. For the purpose of determining the profile of the pupils, the researcher will look at the attitude of pupils towards their peers and teachers. The questionnaire that will be utilized in the present study is from an unpublished Master thesis in Bulacan State University that was conducted by Errol Joseph D.Advincula in 2003. For the respondents academic achievement and behavior the researcher will seek the assistance of the principal and teacher of each school for the retrieval of the form 137 of each respondents. The questionnaire will then be used to determine the attitude of the respondents towards their peers and teachers . The researcher will administer the test explaining that their answers in the questionnaire will not affect their performance in school and will be treated with utmost confidentiality. The time in which the questionnaire will be answered by the respondents will depend upon their availability and approval of the school administrator. Data Processing and Statistical Treatment The data will be gathered from interviews, questionnaire and from the respondents general average and behavior will be organized, tallied and tabulated. Statistical instrument that will be usedwill be frequency counts, percentage, mean, standard

deviation, and t-tset for significant difference such as:

77

1. To determine the profile of the respondents in terms of their classroom structure the researcher will utilize the frequency distribution and percentages. 2. The frequency distribution and percentage will also be used to determine the academic achievement, behavior and attitude of the selected pupil respondents. 3. Weighted mean will be utilized to detrmine the attitude of the pupils towards teachers and peers. The weighted scale that will be used for interpreting the weighted means are as follows:

Weight

Range

Interpretation

5 4 3 2 1

4.60 - 5.00 3.60- 4.59 2.60- 3.59 1.60- 2.59 1.00 -1.59

For further understanding of interpretation, a five degree scale will be used. 5 4. 3. 2. 1. - always ( when the attitude is generally done at all) often ( when the attitude is done many times) occasionally ( when the attitude is done on lesser time or some instances) rarely ( when the attitude is done a few times) never ( when the attitude is not done or practiced at all) The general average of the grade five and grade

academic achievement. The general average of the pupils will be from the five major subjects which includes English, Math, Science, Filipino and English. Each subject is computed from different components including Periodical Tests, Quizzes, Oral Participation, Performance output, Projects and Homeworks. Percentages from these components will then be added to get the numerical grade of each pupils being 100 as the highest score and 75 as the lowest passing mark. Pupils who have grades below 75 are considered to have failing marks. These data can be found in the pupils Form 137. The data that will be gathered will be analyzed and interpreted. Pupils Behavior The data that will be used by the researcher in acquiring the students behavior can be found on the selected pupils form 137 which includes the 14 observable character traits which includes Honesty, courtesy, Helpfulness and

cooperation, Resource and Creativity, Consideration for others, Sportmanship,Obedience, Self-Reliance, Industry, Cleanliness and Orderliness, Promptness and Punctuality, Sense of Responsibility, Love of God and Patriotism. Each observable character trait will be measured by the teacher using a checklist, one teacher in the self-contained classroom structure will be the one to assess each traits while each subject area teacher in a departmentalized classroom structure will be the one to give the grade for each trait. The average will then be computed. Letter grades with equivalent numerical grades are used in the 14 observable character traits. These are as follows: Non- Numerical Rating A -Outstanding B - Very Good C - Good D - Fair Numerical Equivalent 95-100 89-94 83-88 76-82

The data will also be analyzed and interpreted. The Pearson Product - Moment of Cooefficient Correlation will be used to test the degree of relationship between the classroom structure ( self-contained and Departmentalized) on the academic achievement, attitude and behavior of selected pupils The t-test will also be used to determine if there is a significant diffrence between classroom structure and pupils academic achievement, behavior and attitude towards peers and teachers.
