I. I. I. I. WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME TO TO TO TO TU TU TU TURKEY RKEY RKEY RKEY
A. MESSAGE FROM THE LOC
Since 1999, Turkey is getting ready to host and organize the best ever World Championship. Therefore the
Local Organizing Committee (further referred to as LOC) is making the strongest of efforts to host the Worlds
Basketball Giants in the best way possible in this beautiful country where continents and civilizations meet
and different faiths and beliefs have been living together in harmony throughout history.
After the success of the 2001 Eurobasket, Turkey is proud and excited about hosting the biggest and most
prestigious basketball event, the 2010 FIBA World Championships (further referred to as Championship). The
selected host cities of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Kayseri are eager to offer the world-famous Turkish
hospitality to teams, fans, sponsors, media and other stakeholders.
Bringing the FIBA World Championship to the highest level in terms of organization and overall experience is
the LOCs main challenge. Turkey is working with utmost energy to host 24 countries from 5 continents
between 28th of August to 12th of September 2010 in the host cities. Taking over the flag from two economical
super powers, USA and Japan respectively, leads the LOC to work much harder to reach their goals as host
country. Hence, it becomes a must to have the full support of the Turkish public, which is required to make
this event a prominent event in our country.
The basketball fans will travel to Turkey to be a part of the Championship. They are going to see the
basketball stars live and will blend in with basketball fans coming from other countries. Our guests will taste
all the gorgeousness of basketball and have the opportunity to experience Turkeys famous natural beauties
and historical wonders at the same time.
We are striving to achieve the goal of excellence in the organization of the Championship, and are aware that
this will have marvellous benefits for the promotion, economy and sports of this country without any doubt.
On one hand, five magnificent arenas specially built or renovated for the Championship will stand as the
biggest legacy of the event for the next generations. On the other hand, the international authorities are
keeping a close eye on the projects developed and evaluating this Championship as the biggest reference for
Turkeys ultimate dream of hosting the Olympic Games which proves the significance of the event for the
country.
The LOC is fully aware of this huge responsibility and is giving its best effort for the preparation of the biggest
and most important sport event which will ever be hosted in Turkey.
We are welcoming you to this joyful and exciting event, where the greatest team of international basketball
will be determined.

II. II. II. II. THE CITY OF THE CITY OF THE CITY OF THE CITY OF ISTANBUL ISTANBUL ISTANBUL ISTANBUL
A. KEY INFORMATIONS
The God and human, the nature and the art are together in there, they have created such a perfect place
that is valuable to see. Alphone de Lamartines famous poetic line reveals his love for Istanbul, describing
the embracing of two continents, with one arm reaching out to Asia and the other to Europe.
Istanbul (historically also known as Byzantium and Constantinople) is the largest city in Turkey and the fifth
largest city in the world with a population of 13.8 million people. It is also a mega city as well as being the
cultural and financial centre of Turkey. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman
Empire (330-395 AD), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395-1204 and 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-
1261) and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922).
The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and chosen as joint
European Capital of Culture for 2010. It is the only city in the world to straddle two continents and the only one
to have been a capital during two consecutive empires Christian and Islamic.
Istanbuls variety is one of its greatest attractions. The ancient mosques, palaces, museums and bazaars
reflect its diverse history. The thriving shopping area of Taksim buzzes with life and entertainment. The 19th
century iek Pasaj (which translates literally as Flower Passage) on stiklal Avenue, consisting of many
historic meyhanes, pubs and restaurants, was built back in 1876. The famous Nevizde Street, with rows of
historic meyhanes next to each other, is also in this area. Other historic pubs are to be found in the areas
around Tnel Pasaj and the nearby Asmalmescit Soka. Some historic neighborhoods around stiklal
Avenue have recently been recreated, with varying degrees of success. For example, Cezayir Soka,
situated near Galatasaray High School, became unofficially known as La Rue Franaise and has rows of
francophone pubs, cafs and restaurants playing live music.
Istanbul is also famous for its historic seafood restaurants. The most popular seafood restaurants are
generally found along the shores of the Bosphorus and by the Marmara Sea shore towards the south of the
city. The largest of the Princes Islands in the Sea of Marmara (namely Bykada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and
Knalada) and Anadolu Kava near the northern entrance of the Bosphorus towards the Black Sea also
have many historic seafood restaurants. On top of all these meyhanes, pubs and restaurants, Istanbul has
one of the most famous cuisines in the world with its traditional Ottoman features. The food served at hotels
and restaurants is exceptionally unique and memorable for almost everyone who visits the city. Rak, Sish
Kebap and Turkish Delight are the biggest trademarks of Turkish foods with their worldwide reputations and
are strongly recommended for visitors.

B. MUST SEE
Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) Museum
For nearly a thousand years, Ayasofya was the largest enclosed space in the
world, and still seen as one of the worlds most important structures. It is one of
Turkeys most popular attractions, drawn by the sheer spectacle of its size,
architecture, mosaics and art.
It used to be a church for 916 years, then a mosque for 481 years, and has been a
museum since 1935. Thought to have been constructed by Emperor Konstantinos
I (324-337) it was burned down during a revolt. Rebuilt by Emperor Theodosium II, it was opened for worship
in 415 and once again was burned to the ground, during the Nika revolts of 532.
Emperor Iustanianus (527-565) wanted to build something even bigger than the first two versions of the
structure. He appointed architects Isidoros from Miletos and Anthemios from Tralles to build the Aya Sofya
which still stands. Columns, heads, marble and coloured stones were imported to Istanbul from ancient cities
in Anatolia for the purpose.
The construction began on 23rd December 532 and was completed exactly five years later. The main, central
section measured 100m by 70m, covered with a 55m high dome which was a mammoth 30m in diameter
appearing to be a great feat of design. The mosaics are of great importance and the oldest ones are
dominated by geometric and plant motifs decorated with gold.
Sultanahmet Mosque (called the Blue Mosque)
Sultan Ahmet I built this mosque in the 17th century (1609-1616) in the square
carrying his name. The architect was Sedefkar Mehmet Aa. It is the only mosque
in Turkey with six minarets. The mosque is 72m long by 64m wide. The central
dome is 43m high and has a diameter of 33.4m and there are 260 windows. Due to
its beautiful blue, green and white tiling, it has been named the Blue Mosque by
Europeans. The inscriptions were made by Seyyid Kasm Gubari.
Topkap Palace Museum
The Topkapi Palace Museum is located on the promontory of the historical peninsula in Istanbul which
overlooks both the Marmara Sea and the Istanbul strait. The walls enclosing the palace grounds, the main
gate on the land side and the first buildings were built during the time of Fatih Sultan Mehmet (the Conqueror)
(1451-1481). The palaces present layout stems from additional
structures built in later centuries. Topkap Palace was the official
residence of the Ottoman Sultans, starting with Fatih Sultan Mehmet
until 1856 when Sultan Abdlmecid I moved the administrative centre
of the state to the Dolmabahe Palace. The Enderun section also
gained importance as a school.
In the 18th century, when the Topkap Palace took its final shape, it was sheltering a population of more than
10,000 people in its outer (Birun), inner (Enderun) and Harem sections. It shows no architectural unity as new
parts were added in every period according to the needs. However, this helps in tracking the stages Ottoman
Architecture went through from the 15th to the middle of the 19th century at the Topkap Palace. The
buildings of the 15th-17th centuries are simpler and those of the 18th-19th centuries, particularly in terms of
exterior and interior ornamentation, are more complex.
Topkap Palace was turned into a museum in 1924. Parts of the Palace such as the Harem, Baghdat Pavilion,
Revan Pavilion, Sofa Pavilion, and the Audience Chamber distinguish themselves with their architectural
assets, while in other sections artifacts displayed reflect the palace life. The museum also has collections
from various donations and a library.

7
Kapal ar (Covered Bazaar)
It is the oldest and biggest closed bazaar in the world, also known as the Grand
Bazaar, and has an estimated 4,000 shops and over 60 alleyway, covering a huge
labyrinth in the city centre. The original two structures, covered with a series of
domes and remains from the 15th century walls, became a shopping area by
covering the surrounding streets and adding to it over the following centuries. In
Ottoman times, this was the centre of trading and a vital area of town. The Sandal
Bedesten was added during Sleymans reign to cope with the rising trade in fabrics in the 16th century.
Msr ars (Egyptian Bazaar)
Also known as the Spice Market, this is Istanbuls second bazaar, constructed in
the same complex as Yeni Camii (or New Mosque). There are six gates which
make it an attractive exterior. The L-shaped market, along with the mosque, was
built for the mother of Mehmet IV, a powerful woman who ruled the harem and,
some would say, much of the empire.
Dolmabahe Palace
Built in the reign of Sultan Abdlmecid I during the 19th century,
this over-ornate palace lies along the European coast of the
Istanbul strait. Dolmabahe Palace was constructed between
1843 and 1856, mixing different European artistic influences and
built by Abdlmecids architect, Karabet Balya. It was built on
three levels, and symmetrically planned, with 285 chambers and
43 halls. It has a 600m long pier along the river, with two huge
monumental gates. The palace is surrounded by well-maintained and immaculate gardens, with an immense
56-columned greeting hall, with 750 lights illuminated from 4.5 tons of crystal chandelier. The entrance was
used to meet and greet Sultans and the harem was opposite the ceremonial hall. The interior decoration,
furniture, silk carpets and curtains all remain with little defect.
Rumeli Castle
Rumeli Castle is a fortress located in the Saryer district of Istanbul on a hill on the
European side of the Bosphorus. It was built in 1452 by Sultan Mehmet the
Conqueror, in defense against the final attack on Istanbul. This attack led to the
downfall of the Byzantine Empire. Today, the castles amphitheater hosts a variety
of concerts and performances.
Galata Tower
The 55 meter medieval stone tower, providing a panoramic view of the old town, was built by
the Genoese as a part of the wall surrounding their district directly opposite to Byzantium.
The tower is now a touristic restaurant and a night club.
Sleymaniye Mosque
This outstanding piece of architecture was built in 1762 by the
famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan for Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient.
Standing on a hilltop of the ancient city, it interlaces gracefully with the citys
skyline.

A. INNER CITY
Istanbul is a large, congested, crowded city. It is as complicated as all the other metropoles in the world.
Even though the public transportation network is quite big, you will enjoy your visit more if you know how to
get around. IETT is (Istanbul Electric Tramway and Tunnel) the enterprise of Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality and responsible for most of the public transportation media in Istanbul.
Public Bus Public Bus Public Bus Public Bus service is provided by IETT. The bus network is quite wide in Istanbul and buses are used by
many people everyday. But a good advice for rush hours would be to use vehicles which will not be affected
by the traffic jam. General information can be found in the website of IETT (www.iett.gov.tr/en/index.php), as
well as detailed transportation maps and a How can I go there? application.
Subway Subway Subway Subway is used by around 400.000 people everyday. There are two lines, one runs
between Atatrk Airport and Aksaray, the other between Taksim and 4. Levent with
two connection lines to ihane and Atatrk Oto Sanayi. A detailed railway map
can be found in the website of Istanbul Transportation Company stanbulUlam
(www.istanbululasim.com.tr/en/default.asp).
Metrobus Metrobus Metrobus Metrobus is the bus line which has its own road like a tram. With three different line numbers,
transportation between Sogutlucesme (in Asian Side) and Avcilar (in European side) is provided.
Trams Trams Trams Trams are also regulated by the Istanbul Transportation Company. There are three main
lines: T1 Zeytinburnu- Kabatas, T2 Gungoren-Bagcilar and T4 Topkap-Habibler. Also two
nostalgic trams are running, one in Asian side between Kadikoy and Moda the other in
Taksim on Istiklal Street.
Taxis Taxis Taxis Taxis in Istanbul are yellow and have the sign TAKS on the top. Sometimes you can get
the feeling that all the cars are taxis in Istanbul. Especially at night you see yellow
everywhere. They run with a taxi-meter and you pay the price written on it at the end of
the ride.
Hava Hava Hava Hava is the ground handling services company which has shuttles between
airports and city centers in many cities. In Istanbul, From Atatrk Airport there are
shuttles to Taksim, Kozyatagi and Bakrkoy. From Sabiha Gokcen Airport shuttle
buses go to Kozyatagi, Taksim and Izmit. The ticket price is higher than normal bus
tickets but it saves a lot time since you do not make any stops inbetween. For shuttle
schedule and fares please check the website of Hava (www.havas.net).
Tickets Tickets Tickets Tickets
Akbil (SmartTicket) is the prepaid ticket which is very commonly used in Istanbul.
There are daily, weekly and 15-day BlueAkbil whereas you can have a regular
Akbil and charge it as much as you want. Akbil is valid in Bus, Subway, Sea
Buses, Metrobus, Regional Trains and boats as well. If you do not have any smart
ticket you can pay the bus driver but the price will be almost twice as much as the
normal price. For boats, metrobus, subway, tramway and all other rail system you
can buy a token at each station from automats if you do not have any Akbil. Keep
in mind that you can buy tickets only with Turkish currency.

C. GENERAL HINTS FOR TRANSPORTATION
Almost all intercity bus companies have free shuttles to the main bus terminal from the branch offices
for free. Do not forget to ask the schedule for shuttles when you buy your ticket.
In all cities public buses, you will see the line number in front of the bus as well as the start and end
stop of the route. The same information can be seen next to the front door.
You can enter the public buses only from the front door/ and normally you need to use other doors to
get out from the bus.
It is not common to give tip to the driver in taxis but people usually round off the price to upper
number and do not get any change back.
For any question about travelling you can contact the official travel agency DETUR
(Tel: +90 212 347 46 30) - www.detur.com.tr
In Turkey the speed limit on highways is120 km/h and on national roads 90 km/h. This limit decreases
to 50 km/h in on city roads.
Turkey is a very safe country, but like in all other big cities in the world you should pay a little more
attention on your valuables especially in all public transport vehicles.

B. SINAN ERDEM OLYMPIC DOME
Once the group stages finish, all eyes will be on the newly completed Sinan Erdem Dom, which will be the
venue for all remaining games. Ranked among the largest indoor arenas in Europe, the Sinan Erdem Dome, as
it is known in Turkey, will provide the perfect setting as the latter stages of the Championship unfold.
This venue, which has plenty of behind the scenes working space is also ideally suited to welcome the
large number of accredited persons covering the Championship, providing great working conditions for even
the most demanding journalists and media representatives.
This gargantuan arena, named after the late Sinan Erdem, President of the National Olympic Committee of
Turkey, will live on beyond the end of the 2010 FIBA World Championship, as it will begin to prepare for two
more massive events of the world sports calendar, hosting the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships
and the FINA Short Course Swimming Championships in 2012.
But rest assured that first someone has to be crowned World Champion, and the Sinan Erdem Dom will
provide the perfect setting for what promises to be a breathtaking knock-out round of the 2010 FIBA World
Championship.

C. MIXED ZONE PROCEDURES
During the 2010 FIBA World Championship games, players, coaches and other team delegation staff will be
able to meet members of the media in the Mixed Zones set-up at each venue.
The concept of the Mixed Zone is to create an informal meeting area for post-game interviews.
Players and coaches are encouraged to be available for interviews, but they are not obliged to give
interviews and could go straight to their locker rooms. If both parties respect this rule, the process will be
made considerably easier.
The Mixed Zone will be placed on the route used by players and coaches while leaving the court and heading
to the locker rooms. The Mixed Zone is only accessible to teams and accredited members of the media and
cannot be accessed by spectators.
All players and coaches will use the team entrance doors before games and at half-time breaks. However, at
the end of the games these doors will be closed and teams will only be able to reach the locker rooms by
using the Mixed Zone route. Players and coaches must refrain from using prohibited areas/routes.
Application procedures related to the Mixed Zone will be announced and explained to team representatives
at the technical meeting held the day before the Championship begins.
In the Mixed Zone, pathways will be formed by barriers for players and coaches to head towards the locker
rooms and where the media will be kept behind the pathway barriers. Between the end of games, and until
the entry of the teams to the Mixed Zone is completed, the entrance of the zone will be closed to members of
the media for two to three minutes. Media wishing to be present in the Mixed Zone should get there a few
minutes before the end of the games to avoid being prevented from accessing to the Mixed Zone by security
personnel.
Video interviews in the Mixed Zone must be done in front of the interview backdrops.
Rights holders will be given special post-game interview positions within the mixed zones. Accordingly, order
of priority for interviewing the players and coaches in the Mixed Zone will be as follows:
Host Broadcaster
ENG Rights Holder (TV)
Print and online media as well as TV and radio non-rights holders
All of the non-rights holders will conduct their interviews exclusively in the Mixed Zone.
While working in the Mixed Zone, members of the media shall not be excessively or irritatingly insistent, they
shall respect the decision of players and coaches whether or not to give an interview and they will follow the
directives of the authorities who are assigned by FIBA/LOC.
FIBA and the LOC have the right to cancel the accreditations of any members of the media that do not obey
the rules that are listed for the Mixed Zone.
The teams are required to scrupulously follow the rules for leaving the court after the game through the
mixed zone. Non-appliance may result in disciplinary and/or financial sanctions against the team.

Together of youth from all around the world.
The Children of the World project is a social event for the youth balancing basketball, education and
culture. It is organised in parallel to the 2010 FIBA World Championship, which brings the biggest basketball
stars of the World to Turkey, providing a unique opportunity for selected young players from as many FIBA
member countries as possible.
It is a multi-national, multi-cultural activity camp project for 14-year-old boys and girls, who will have the
opportunity to live together and build a better understanding of different cultures and perceptions while
officially taking part in the Championship. Each country has the chance to send 1 youth coach below the age
of 35 to the camp as well.
The Children of the World project aims to change the trend of athletes burying
themselves in a world which consists of basketball only and inspire a new
generation of basketball stars to become more complete athletes and officials.
The camp will take place in the Ayhan Sahenk Arena and will not only involve
the practice of the basketball, but also many different projects based peace,
friendship and cultural sharing.
It will be a meeting between the present and future stars of the world. Turkish
national team players may be lucky enough to shake hand of the next basketball
legend.

IX. IX. IX. IX. SERVICES SERVICES SERVICES SERVICES
A. EMERGENCIES & HEALTH SERVICES
Health care in Turkey is provided by public, semi-public and philanthropic organizations, including the
Ministry of Health, universities, the Ministry of Defence and private health professionals.
In general, hospitals have good medical facilities especially in big cities and have many excellent doctors
with extensive training and experience. State hospitals are usually better equipped and cheaper than private
hospitals. However, private hospitals are generally less crowded and give a higher quality service.
In case of possible emergency situations, carry with you a certain amount of Turkish currency or your credit
card (VISA or MasterCard preferred) as hospitals may expect to be paid immediately for their service.
At all welcome desks in official hotels, LOC representative will be able to provide you firsthand help. Do not
hesitate to contact them.
B. PRACTICAL INFORMATIONS
1. Climate
Although Turkey is in a location where climatic conditions are quite moderate, the diverse nature of the
landscape and the existence of mountains that run parallel to the coasts can make significant differences in
climatic conditions from one region to another. While the coastal regions enjoy milder climates, the inland
Anatolia plateau has hot summers and cold winters with limited rainfall.
Knowing the average temperature is not enough to understand how the weather in Turkey is going to be. You
should always take humidity into account as well. Below you will find a chart of the average temperatures in
celsius during the summer in the host cities:

June June June June July July July July August August August August September September September September

Kayseri Kayseri Kayseri Kayseri 18.8 35.7 22.4 40.7 21.7 40.0 17.1 36.0
2. Monetary System
The national monetary unit is the Turkish Lira (TL). The coinage is in
5, 10, 25 and 50 kuru (cent) pieces and 1 TL pieces. Banknotes
are of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 lira as you can see on the right side.
In January 2005 a new currency was introduced: TL Trk Liras
(Turkish Lira). From January 1, 2009, the new was removed from
the lira and the Turkish currency became the Turkish Lira. For a year
both TL and YTL were used. YTL is not valid from January 1, 2010.
You may change any YTL received by mistake into TL at any Merkez
Bankas (Central Bank) and Ziraat Bankas (Ziraat Bank) branches.
a) Changing Money
The exchange rates for foreign currencies are published daily. You can safely exchange money at Bank and
Exchange Offices. Exchange offices in tourist places are generally open until midnight whilst in the

46
international airports they are open permanently. US dollar and Euro are the easiest currencies to change,
although many banks and exchange offices will change other major currencies such as UK pounds and
Japanese Yen. Exchange rates may vary between the Exchange Offices and the Banks. Before changing your
currency, check the website (*) of the Central Bank to see what the exchange rate should be.
(*) http://www.tcmb.gov.tr/yeni/eng/
b) ATM and Checks
The most widely accepted credit cards are American Express, Eurocard, Diners Club, Visa, and
MasterCard. You can easily find an ATM machine in the main squares, shopping malls, central areas,
etc. Virtually all the machines offer instructions in English, French and German. Keep in mind that there
is a daily withdrawal limit around 500 Euros. However, credit cards are widely accepted by hotels,
restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and shops.
Travellers cheques and Euro-cheques can be cashed at all large banks when cheque card and identification
card are presented. You may exchange travellers checks at Post Offices in some tourist places and at
certain banks as well.
c) Value Added Tax (VAT)
This tax in Turkey is charged 18% by law. However, for deliveries and services like agricultural products or
supply and leasing of goods within the scope of the Finance Leasing Law the rate is 1%. For deliveries and
services like basic food stuffs, books and similar publications VAT rate is 8%.
d) Tax Free
It is easy to shop and save money when travelling. As a tourist you are entitled to claim a tax return if
you export your purchases. Shop in any of the stores which have a tax free sign on the entrance, and
make your trip even more rewarding!
Ask the shop staff for a Refund Cheque when paying for your purchases. Show your purchases, receipt and
passport to Customs when leaving the country and have your Refund Cheque stamped. Show the stamped
Refund Cheque, passport and credit card at a nearby Refund Office and ask for an Immediate Refund on your
credit card. Alternatively the Refund can be paid in cash.
e) Limitation
An unlimited amount of foreign currency can be brought into the country and taken out. However no more
than $5.000 worth of Turkish currency may not be brought in or taken out.
f) Exchange Slips
The exchange slips for the conversion of foreign currency into Turkish lira should be kept, as you may be
required to show these when reconverting your Turkish lira back into foreign currency and when taking
souvenirs out of the country (to prove they have been purchased with legally exchanged foreign currency).
3. Postal System
a) PTT
Turkish post offices are easily recognized by their black PTT letters on a yellow background. Major post
offices are open from 8:00 a.m. till 12:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m., on Sundays.
Small post offices have the same hours as the government offices.
For sending your valuable belongings or important documents an express postal service Acele
Posta Servisi (APS) operates from Turkey to 72 other countries for letters, documents, and small
packages. It is possible to exchange money at some PTT branches at the current international

47
exchange rate. International postal orders and travellers cheques can also be exchanged. Stamp collectors
will be delighted with the wide range of special stamps available to them from the philatelic section.
International subscriptions are also available.
You can find further information on http://www.ptt.gov.tr/en/

4. Telecommunication System
Trk Telekom furbishes contemporary communication media services to its customers since 1840.
Trk Telekom offers a public phone service with the same tariff as home lines.
Payphones can operate with all Trk Telekom cards and credit cards. It is provided
for free in the places open to public such as the squares, hospitals, terminals, bus
stations, ports, metro stations and public housing areas. You can make calls to all
landlines (in-city, intercity, international) and GSM numbers via payphones and send SMS via the new
payphones. There are approximately 85.000 payphones all over Turkey. You can get Prepaid Cards from Trk
Telekom branches, offices and mobile sellers.
a) Intercity Calls
When making a national call (from one city to another) first you should always dial a zero (0), then the 3-digit
area code, and finally the 7-digit phone number you wish to reach.
The area codes of the FIBA World Championship 2010 cities are:
Ankara 312
Kayseri 352
Istanbul (European side) 212
(1) (2)

Istanbul (Asian side) 216
(1)

Izmir 232
(1)
Calls between two sides of Istanbul should be made with area codes.
(2)
All Games of 2010 FIBA World Championship will be played in the European Side.
b) Cellular Phone System (GSM)
GSM system in Turkey is widely used and covers a major part of the land. In order to call a cellular phone
number registered by Turkish GSM operators, you should first dial a zero (0) followed by the operators 3-digit
prefix, then you may dial the 7-digit phone number you wish to reach.

48
It might be useful to get one pre-paid number from one of the GSM operators, if you will need to make many
national phone calls in Turkey. Your registered number vanishes naturally if you do not load any credit for 6
months.
5. Turkish Cuisine
Turkish cuisine is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine, which can be described as
the fusion and fruit of the refinement of Central Asian, Middle Eastern and Balkan
cuisines. Turkish cuisine has in turn influenced neighbouring cuisines. The Ottomans
fused various culinary traditions of their realm with influences from Middle Eastern
cuisines, along with traditional Turkic elements from Central Asia, creating a vast
array of specialities, many with strong regional associations.
Every region has its own specialities. In Aegean Region, olive oil is widely used and the typical food is
Mediterranean cuisine, whereas in Eastern Region there are more meat dishes and kebabs with very hot
spices.
Kebabs, cold appetizers (mezes), olive oil dishes (dolma, sarma, etc.), special pastries (brek, simit, poaa,
etc.), pasta specialities (kekek, mant, gzleme, etc.), fresh fish, ottoman dishes and delicious deserts
(baklava, kazandibi, etc.) are worth a try while you are in Turkey.
6. Shopping
a) General
Whether you are in Turkey for a few days or a few weeks, shopping is usually an essential part of the visit.
Turkish carpets, for example, are beautiful and quite valuable since they are hand woven with unique designs
made with materials dyed with natural colours. Each region of Turkey has its own design and the silk carpets
are of course the most valuable. Some carpets can take up to eighteen months to be made by one weaver. In
addition, leather and jewellery (gold and silver) are favourite purchases. It is worth trying to get a cheaper
price, especially in bazaars and small shops, although some prices are fixed. It is not usual to ask for a price
reduction in Shopping Malls or major brands.
b) Bazaars
Bazaars are traditional shopping areas in Turkey specializing in a particular type of product or manufacture.
They are also often beautiful monuments varying in size and architectural style. Bargaining is very common if
you are buying from bazaars.

C. SECURITY
Turkey is a safe country. The overall crime rate is relatively low. However, as in other large metropolitan
areas throughout the world, it is always useful to pay attention to your valuables. Common street crimes,
especially in tourist areas, are pick-pocketing, purse-snatching and mugging.
Petty criminals are very clever in what they do and often work in small groups. A member of the group
approaches you openly and tries to distract your attention while another member who you probably will not
even sees will try to snatch your bag or wallet.
A small list of precautions can be made to reduce the risk of being robbed:
Avoid going out with a lot of money on you, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Try to not to distance yourself from the crowd and avoid empty dark streets.
If you carry a back-pack, do not put your valuables in the front pocket or carry it completely on your
chest.
If you ever have a problem, contact directly the nearest police station:

September. On those days, all government
locations will be closed as well as many shops, all banks and many other private offices.
Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, in which practicing Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking,
and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until sunset. Fasting is meant to teach
Muslims patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God and to
prayer more than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help
in refraining from everyday evils and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. As
compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving forward about ten days each year as it is
a moving holiday depending on the moon. In 2010, the fasting month is between 11th August and 8th
September followed by the 3 days.

surrounded by the security personnel upon their arrival.

59
The allocated locker room for the teams will go through a security check before the teams go inside the locker
room.
The teams will be guided directly from the entrance of the arenas to the locker rooms by an official. The room key
will be handed to the same official after team members enter the room.
When the teams are in the locker room, there will be security personnel in front of the door. The room will be
locked and key will be taken after the last team member leaves the room.
The estimated departure time of the teams will be informed by the team attachs and team bus will be stand-by
ready near to the exit. The security measurements will be taken between the exit door of the arena and the bus.
In case of a coincidence of two teams entering or leaving the arena at the same time, the security area will be
widened and non-accredited persons will not be allowed to enter the area.
2. Player Access and Exit to the Court
The responsible security crew will clear the ways to the court and guide the teams while they enter and leave the
court. If any team member or coach leaves the court for any reason during the game, that person will be guided
by two security personnel.
In case of any exposure to physical threat for the players, a security circle on the outer area of the court will be
made by security staff and the evacuation of the players will be ensured in the security circle.
Two extra security personnel apart from the security circle crew will be assigned to the players in case they
cannot leave the court on time with the rest of the team.

Preventing the disturbing acts or attacks to the teams,
Preventing the traffic behind the team benches,
Securing the materials on the benches.
During the time outs, those two security personnel will stand up and face the tribunes with their backs to the
team bench. The third security person will be on the court standing 4.5 - 5 meters perpendicularly away from the
centre of the bench with his body facing towards the players.
4. Post-game Court Entry Attempts of the Spectators
There will be one security person each on the opposite corners of the team benches and under the baskets.
These security personnel will stand up during the timeouts and stand one meter inside the court in order to
become more visible.
Right before the end of the game, the personnel who are not occupied in their responsible area will be assigned
to prevent the undesired entrance to the court. Especially in tight games, extra personnel will be assigned to the
possible court access points in order to prevent the audience to enter the court. Also, there will be more security
staff assigned to the team benches in such games.
