Steven Lombardo 3 Interviews 29SEPT/2013 April Grub is a graduate student who is working on getting her masters in 19th century

American Western with an emphasis on memory and gender. She currently works as a teachers assistant in history, roots of contemporary issues. Washington State University is covering a majority of the masters program costs while she studies and works. Her favorite history subjects involve 19th century western culture. She grew up watching John Wayne movies and Clint Eastwood films. Her grandpa was a huge fan of the Wild West and April grew up to love the idea of it. So she decided to get into history to study her passion. What she found out was the west was much more complex than just cowboys fighting Indians on horseback. Other subjects April is interested is early American and colonial centuries. Looking at the way global powers and native tribes tried to grab up as much land as they could. While getting a degree in history has the usual teaching opportunities, there are many more pathways to a good career. If you obtain a masters in history a few of the government alphabet companies would hire, such as the FBI and CIA. They chose history majors due to their analytical skills and abilities to research topics well. Public teaching jobs that are not class room related are available too. Such as working at national parks, museums and living reenactments. There are a few ways to find connections and network as a history undergrad and graduate. The history department has a club called Phi Alpha Theta which is a program for undergrads. The HGSA or History Graduate Student Association is for graduate students who are working for their masters. The GPSA or Graduate Professional Student Association is available for all students.

While studying history there has been a shift of thought over the last few decades. Since the 80s there has been a cultural shift in emphasis from how we view history. While old text books have been focused primarily on the dominant powers, classes and social statuses of mostly white males. The new shift in learning is to understand how the poor, minorities and females participated in history. This has been a change from the victors write history. Other studies in history now include Borderland history, which is acknowledging that America isnt just an island on the planet. It focuses that the globe is interconnected and how the United States wasnt just a melting pot, but that different cultures segregated themselves between class, race and gender. Many other majors connect with a degree in history. Anthropology and archeology both focus on the past, and are interlinked in historical studies. English and history majors have similarities because of the shared study and research habits. While working as an undergraduate in a history department there are many ways to work with a professor. Each history class has research papers designed to teach students how to properly cite and research sources. TAs are also available for these projects. The career paths for history majors for over 80% of them is to get a secondary education degree and teach high school. Most do not go any farther then undergraduate school. Most decided to get other degrees as well to help their marketability while looking for jobs. Another degree that pairs well with history degrees for teaching is social studies, due to its ability to teach many different classes such as economics, social studies, and government.

Dina Mijacevic has a Ph.D and has a certification from the American Council on Exercise in personal training. She teaches Kinesiology 264 fitness concepts. She has always had a passion for fitness and teaches by her example. Her fitness level is far greater than most professors her age. Kinesiology and the sports science degree has many careers available depending on the persons interests. For a more physical side personal trainers and athletic trainers are available career paths for kinesiology majors. Other jobs are physical therapy and prosthetics and orthotics. These are more clinical jobs that require further schooling but pay higher. Kinesiology links well with prosthetics and orthotics due to the study of movement, so technicians are able to make adjustments to help each patient. There is a kinesiology club at WSU which is available to undergraduate students. Current advancements in technology are pushing the limits on kinesiology jobs. Due to new technology and medical equipment people are able to treat and support while giving top notch patient care. Majors that share a common knowledge base with kinesiology include the science majors. Degrees in biology, chemistry and even athletic training are all used in the fields kinesiology majors work in. Using knowledge of human anatomy and biological chemical aspects of the body undergrads can develop a wide range of skills. Most graduates who are looking for work as a personal or athletic trainer go straight into the work force after their bachelors degree. However if looking for work as a physical therapist or physicians assistant you must take additional school.

Dr. Bethany J. Marshall teaches biology 140 the study of nutrition. She has a Ph.D in entomology from Michigan State University. Her field is related to biology, which by its self is a large field of study. While getting a degree in biology hundreds of career options open up. Some of the fields include environmental, medical, pharmaceutical, chemical and clinical research. You can also continue education to specialize in a field of study in biology, such as entomology. There are two different biology related clubs at WSU. Biological food engineering club, and the biomass engineering club. Other majors related to biology include the STEM majors. All science, engineering and mathematic majors have shared commonalities with biology. All of these majors also share some of the same career fields that biology has. A large majority of students go on to work in the industry with their specialized biology degrees however students who go on to earn a masters or Ph.D can earn a significantly larger pay check.
