Eureka! takes place in the cit of %uln in the &mpire# although it could easil be an other 'ld World cit ( It is designed for )*+ first*career pla er characters ,-.s/# and makes an e0cellent introductor adventure ,or convention scenario/ as it can easil be completed in a single session( It can also be added to an e0isting campaign as a fun aside# for even though Eureka! is intended for adventurers on their first career# it can still provide an interesting challenge to veteran groups( 1his scenario first appeared in White Dwarf Magazine #93# and "as later reprinted# "ith some changes# in The Restless Dead( 1his version of

1he adventurers should be unemplo ed at the start of this adventure# either bet"een 'ma4or' campaigns# or# ideall # 4ust starting out as ne"comers to the ha7ardous profession( !s such# the "ill be looking for 4obs of some adventuring kind# and the "a to find such "ork in %uln is to go to the $eik's -lat7( 1he $eik's -lat7 is cro"ded "ith burghers# entertainers# soldiers# sailors# and even press gangs6 It is filled "ith the hustle and bustle of ordinar # ever da life( !ll the available 4obs advertised here should be seen as tedious# boring or highl unprofitable b the adventurers( 8o"ever# the 2eut7 &lm holds the ans"er( !mongst the man messages nailed to the large trunk is one that the adventurers should find interesting( It reads: "#a a$le ersons needed to rote%t &alua$les' Well aid( food and $oard su lied' #onta%t )we the $arman at the Misthaufen Ta&ern'"

If the pla ers "ish to go to the tavern ,as the should/ the "ill have no difficult in finding it( 9ost people can give them directions( 1he 9isthaufen 1avern is actuall fairl close to the $eik's -lat7# and after a short "alk the adventurers "ill find themselves outside a shabb little beershop do"n one of the cit 's man backstreets( 1he barman# U"e# is a fat# good*natured man# and he even gives the adventurers free beers "hen asked about the 4ob( :urprisingl though# for all his generosit # it is not U"e "ho "ants to hire some 'capable persons'( 8e "ill smile and reveal that he is onl a go*bet"een# then give the adventurers instructions on finding a house on the ;ummisteifelstrasse( 1he house is called '2er ;eflugesalat'# and it should not take long to get there( !s the adventurers leave to find out "ho reall "ants to hire people# U"e "ill shout after them: '1ell them U"e sent ou6'

It is late afternoon "hen the adventurers arrive at the house( .louds are beginning to gather overhead and it looks like a storm is on the "a (

With a flourish# the inventor pulls the sheet off the large ob4ect in the middle of his "orkshop( Beneath is >ugelschreiber's latest invention: a submersible6 It is a large# bulbous# brass and bron7e and iron construction( It obviousl takes much of its design from the appearance of a fish( -addles on either side of the submersible take the place of fins and it has glass port*holes in place of e es( 8o"ever# it hasn't occurred to the absentminded genius that the 'untervatership'# as he calls it# is much too large to get out of the door"a # or even up the steps(((

%ight falls in %uln( <ust after Fpm# the door of the ;eflugelsalat house It "ill take the criminals appro0imatel C hour to reach their base( bursts open( 5ramed in the door"a are five menD all are cloaked# 1he "ill make t"o stops along the "a : one at an inn and another hooded and masked( shortl after"ards as a merchant's house( 1"o of the e0torters are carr ing loaded crossbo"s# "hile the others carr clubs( When the enter the house# the "ill spread out and cover the occupants( >ugelschreiber "ill turn on an adventurer that sho"s signs of aggression and remind them of their obligations as his emplo ees: 'Behafe our7elf6 His i7 m hou7e# und 7ere vill be no vighting here6' 5inall # to an "atching adventurer's ama7ement# the criminals arrive at their base of operations( With a last casual look around# the si0 men open a door and enter the .it Watch barracks in this area6 1his is trul something for the characters to think about: corruption in the ranks of the .it Watch# upholders of the la"(

If the characters attempt to rush the small barracks then an alarm "ill :hortl # a si0th man enters the house# attired in the same fashion# but be raised b one of the e0tortionists A "ho are# of course# no" the carr ing a dra"n s"ord ,he likes to look dramatic/( 1his is the leader of Watchmen attached to this barrack block( 1he characters "ill have to be forced to flee as the hue and cr is raised( the e0tortionists# 9anfred >essler( 8e "ill demand the 'fee' from >ugelschreiber# and tuck it into his pouch "hen it is handed over b the inventer( With an elaborate and sarcastic thank ou# he and his men "ithdra"( !s the are denied the opportunit to fight them here and no"# the easiest "a for the adventurers to deal "ith the e0tortionists is to follo" them back to their base and discover their identities( 1he identities of those involved can be then reported to the authorities( 5urther# as an added bonus# the characters can find "here the e0tortionists hide their mone 6 If the adventurers report these bent Watchmen to their superiors A or an other Watchmen A the "ill simpl not be believed( 1r to make it clear that adventurers are suspicious "anderers in the e es of the %uln la"# and perhaps have them arrested( Whatever happens# if it is possible# get the characters into a chase( 1he "ill be the "ould*be hunters "ho have become the hunted( 9anfred >essler "ill do his best to outla" the adventurers in %uln( 'nce this happens# the adventurers can reveal an criminal activit the like# but no court in %uln is going to believe the "ord of a bunch of criminals in preference to that of trusted and respected "atchmen(((

When the adventurers return to the house and inform >ugelschreiber of "hat is happening# he "ill get ver e0cited( 8e "ill shout all kinds of things about the need for a fast escape# but "ill do little but run around and pull out most of his hair( 1he Watchmen "ill arrive shortl after the adventurers tell Wolfgang that the are coming( 1o be e0act# the "atch "ill arrive at the house 2 turns after the arrival of the adventurers( 1he "ill start shouting and banging on the door(
