Density Inquiry Lab Objective: We will identify and measure the density of three marbles; [steel, rainbow, and

plain] Steps that We have Taken So Far: 1. Measured the mass of the empty clear plastic container, [7.1g] 2. Measured mass of container with steel marble, [35.7 g] 3. Found mass of steel marble, [35.7-7.1= 28.6g] 4. Measured mass of container with rainbow marble, [27.2 g] 5. Found mass of rainbow marble, [27.2-7.1=20.1g] 6. Measured mass of container with plain marble, [17.3g] 7. Found mass of plain marble [17.3-7.1=10.2g] Next Steps Involved in Finding Density: 1. Using Displacement, we can find the volume of the marble; originally, it was 500 ml, with the marble, it was 555.5 ml 2. This leads us to conclude that the volume of the marble was a constant, and 55.5 ml 3. In order to find the density of the marble, we do mass/volume 4. The density measurements are as follows: Density of the steel marble: 28.6/55.5= 0.51g/cm^3 Density of the rainbow colored marble: 20.1/55.5= 0.36g/cm^3 Density of the plain marble: 10.2/55.5= 0.18 g/cm^3 5. This leads us to conclude that the density of the steel marble is the greatest of them all. Observations from when the egg was put in the water: When we put the pink egg in the water, the egg just floated on the top of the water, by itself, without any added marbles. Only a little bit was under the water, but when we put the steel marble with the egg, in the water, the eggs side with the marble sank. The top without the marble was above the water. The whole other half was in the water. The water was even with half of the egg. The clear marble was about the same as the metal marble but a little different. The egg also floated but it didn't sink as much. (pictures) Unfortunately, due to differences in volume, based on buoyancy, we have determined that the previous measurements are inaccurate. We, as a group, have forgotten to factor in differences in buoyancy. The buoyancy of an object depends on the shape of the same object. For example, a sphere-shaped clay object of density 1.1 g/cm^3 may sink, while the clay object could be remolded into a saucer-shaped object with the same density, but the saucer-shaped object would float.

Part 2: Objective: To see where the marble will land in the density column Notes: Definition: The viscosity of something is how thick a fluid is. The higher the viscosity, the more thick it is. Hypothesis: Layers (from top to bottom): D- a yellowish oil, low in viscosity B- a clear liquid, low in viscosity C- a green liquid, medium in viscosity A- a dark blue liquid, high in viscosity

When poured into graduated cylinder, the following order is achieved; from top to bottom: B- clear liquid, rubbing alcohol D- yellowish liquid, vegetable oil C- green liquid, water dyed green A- blue liquid, dish soap
