Family Traditions and Artifacts Museum

In Social Studies, our class has been learning how and why many different
immigrant groups have come to America from various parts of the world. Each
ethnic group has brought its own foods, music, dances, and traditions. As they
assimilated into neighborhoods and cities, they helped form the mosaic of
American society.
Our class will be coming together and sharing some of these family and/or
cultural traditions/items with the Spring Street community by having our own
Family Traditions and Artifacts Museum! Each child will bring in TWO items (see
attached organizer for suggestions) to present at the museum. These
items/recipes, etc. do not have to be originals; they can be copies of documents,
books, toys, or clothing, etc.
Students will describe their artifact items on the attached graphic
organizers/planners. Final copies will be completed in class before the actual
museum. Dates will be written in planners; reminders and museum invitations for
you and your family members will be sent home as the date gets closer.

Family Traditions and Artifacts Museum Graphic Organizer/Planner

For our Family Traditions and Artifacts Museum, you will collect and write about TWO (2)
items which have meaning to you and/or your family that help tell the story of your ancestors
who immigrated to America OR that tell your familys story of life in America.

Complete the attached organizer with help from family members as needed. Items you
choose may include:
Photographs/pictures/illustrations
Old newspapers/magazines
Old books
Small toys/dolls
Pieces of clothing
Kitchen items
Table coverings/linens
Containers of non-perishable
food
products
Small ornaments
Costume jewelry
Favorite family recipes
Coins from different countries
Photocopies of important documents
Other items please check with teacher

By WEDNESDAY, January 8, bring your organizers to school to help you prepare for
the museum.
Then, you will work with a classmate by rereading your information and revising/editing
as needed to improve your draft
Finally, in class, write your final copies on oak tag forms that will stand up on your
museum display table
You will bring your artifacts into class on Monday or Tuesday, January 13 or 14 so you
will be prepared to display and present them at the museum on
Wednesday, January 15.
