MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH

Its that time of the year again where we retest all students on DIBELS and NWEA. Our testing dates for DIBELS are Friday, January 17 and Tuesday, January 21 while NWEA testing will be ongoing for the month of January. While DIBELS tracks our students progress in reading (fluency, accuracy and comprehension), NWEA tests all students in reading and math. Grade level teams will review the current progress data that DIBELS Next and NWEA provide, along with other assessment data, to determine appropriate instructional strategies and/or interventions we can put into place to ensure student success. Teachers will leave that data analysis meeting with several plans to meet the needs of the group of students as a whole, as well as individuals within the group. I am looking forward to seeing just how much each of our students have improved and grown so far this year! As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss any concerns, please contact me.

COUNSELORS CORNER ~Sandy Husted~

Motivating students to learn all that they can in school is an important job. Parents and teachers must work together as partners to enhance every childs motivation and performance. A critical ingredient in a childs success is having their parents involved in what is going on at school. As parents, you have a right and responsibility to be involved in your childs education. Tips for Parents to Use in Motivating a Child Success is the greatest motivator. Recognize, reinforce, and celebrate the childs successes and progress even the small victories. When reviewing a test or report card with a child, always comment first on the positive aspects. Enjoy family activities (e.g., family game night, eat dinner together, etc.) Speak positively and supportively about the childs school and teachers. If the child senses a parents hostility toward the school, it is unlikely that the child will be motivated to succeed there. Monitor the childs health and secure medical intervention for any physical problem that may be interfering with her/his ability to attend and fully participate in school. Provide regular, nutritious, well-balanced meals. A child who is not receiving adequate vitamins and minerals is unlikely to be motivated in school. Be certain that the child gets sufficient rest and sleep. Tired children simply cannot learn. Research indicates that even a one-hour difference in the amount of sleep a child gets will impact upon the childs school performance. Communicate to the child the importance that the family holds for education. Remind the child that education is a top family priority. Work with your child in an effort to improve his/her organizational skills Avoid comparing the child to his/her siblings. This practice merely builds resentment and anger, not motivation.
