BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Little Known Facts William McKinley Branch William McKinley Branch was a champion for the rights of black residents across the Black Belt. Branch spent more than 60 years as pastor of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in his native Forkland. In March 1968, William Branch was responsible for driving Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from Eutaw to Greensboro, Ala. to take part in a voting rights march. It would be the last time he would see Dr. King before King was killed three weeks later. In 1970, Branch became the first black probate judge elected in the United States. For 18 years, Branch served as Green County Probate Judge. He worked under Gov. George Wallace, a known segregationist. Branch met with a number of presidents during his tenure, from JFK to Former President Bill Clinton. Branch passed away in January 2014 at the age of 95.
